A tall elf in a weathered cloak sits down in the arena stands and pulls out a leather-bound book labeled Spark Notes vol. 38, rapidly scribbling something down while staring intently at the current match. After a few minutes, she closes the notebook, sighs, and begins making her way back to her lab. "Only so much to learn from a distance. Maybe I should finally enter myself..." Simul, the Lifesparker

Who is Simul? Simul was a member of the Simic Combine during the events known as the War of the Spark. Her spark was ignited when she was nearly killed by an eternal, but the Immortal Sun kept her locked to Ravnica. She began researching the planeswalker Spark and how it interacts with living things around it, eventually leaving the Simic behind to continue her research across the multiverse. She wanders from plane to plane, staying anywhere from years to mere minutes depending on if she can find any interesting flora or fauna, how many planeswalkers are willing to help her research on that plane, and if there are zombies she should be running from. The Arena, with it's abundance of planeswalkers constantly using their powers, is quickly proving to be extremely helpful to her ends, though she's been hesitant to actually join a match for fear of injuring another 'walker.
Where is Simul? She can be found just about anywhere in the Arena where there's other 'walkers to research, usually taking notes in one of her many journals, but sometimes she retreats to her laboratory to attempt some more practical applications. She also has a small storefront as an attempt to directly interact with more sparks while earning some spare coin, where she sells plants of all shapes and sizes, both magical and not.
What is Simul? Bit of a rude question, but it fits both the sequence and the question of who she is in a superficial sense. Simul is a female ex-Simic Ravnican Elf, somewhere between 20 and 35 years old, and fairly tall, though no one would call her towering. She typically wears a large brown cloak that's well-weathered and has dozens of small pockets with useful odds and ends in them, as she's often exploring dangerous areas, or at least following the planeswalkers who are. She has very strong biomancy and a special affinity for plants, so most of her tools and even clothing is grown from magically mutated creations of her own. Her Simic background made her vegetarian and an animal lover, though she has a special fondness for trees and birds respectively. Her facial features and sexuality are still up in the air right now, but she had enough of a crush on Vannifar to be teased for it quite a while back.

Put it all together and I'd say I've only actually filled about thirty proper volumes on the subject. It's good to meet another interested in learning about the Spark though! Far too many of us just take this power for granted." A small bird that seems saturated with blue mana flutters down onto her shoulder and chirps rather pointedly. Dravos Argentium A very bedraggled man watches the elf from a distance, his eyes lingering on the book in her hands for a few moments. "38 volumes of Spark Notes? That bodes well for me..." He thinks to himself. Choosing not to get into an unnecessary conversation, he elects to limp after the elf, following her closely and observing her movements, making no moves to conceal his stalking. After all, he can't seem that suspicious, can he?
Blacklung Sootweaver Creature -- Human Shaman Deathtouch Whenever a player casts a nonblack spell, that player loses 2 life. Truly depraved users of magic, sootweavers turn coughing and retching into incantations of misery and death. 2/3

Oh, now I have a tail. A possibly wounded and obsessive looking one at that. That's worrying. Confront them or... No, best to just throw them off. Her pace increases slightly as she nears one of the many cafes in the area, then breaks into a run as she enters the doorway. "Sorry!" Her sudden sprint causes a stir, but it settles down surprisingly quickly as she exits through the back door and into the network of alleyways. Well that wasn't much fuss about someone running straight through a small shop. It's like being back on Ravnica again. Evade Through a Cafe Instant Prevent all damage that would be dealt to or by up to two target permanents until end of turn. Create two food tokens. (9/10, very well made and flavorful design. Only complaint is that it's color hate.)

Only complaint is that it's color hate.) The man is taken aback slightly as the elf suddenly sprints off through a cafe, but a devilish grin quickly spreads across his face. "So, it's a chase you want? And here I was thinking this town would be boring." He quickens his pace as he enters the cafe. Noticing the weird looks from the cafe patrons, he quickly says to the whole cafe, "That elf woman stole my journal! Can you believe the nerve?" With the low murmuring among the patrons confirming that his ploy worked, he slips out the back door. Having lost sight of the woman entirely, he slowly begins making his way down the alleyways, checking every alcove he can find. "Yoohoo, miss? Come out, come out wherever you are! I promise, I mean you no harm." He calls out to the empty air around him, his smile never leaving his face.
Agonizing Pain Instant Damage can't be prevented this turn. Players can't gain life this turn. Agonizing Pain deals 2 damage to target player. Nothing can defend against pure, unrelenting, agony.
( Evade Through a Cafe -- Serviceable common, although it's a pretty clunky design. Very much do not like the targeting. 6/10)

I did say I wanted to know more." She briefly pulls at a book satchel she's carrying. "I have annotated a comparable number of my encyclopedias, but I can only begin to imagine what it would take to write as much as you have from scratch, especially since with my profession, I'm very much standing on the shoulders of giants, whereas there is very little existing literature concerning planeswalkers. How many of them have you studied? What are your methods?"Annotated Anthology Artifact When Annotated Anthology enters the battlefield, put a lore counter on it and draw a card. Whenever you cast a spell with converted mana cost equal to the number of lore counters on Annotated Anthology, put a lore counter on Annotated Anthology and draw a card. Thoughtburst Flicker — This is at least workable, given that you can activate the ability at instant, but the investment, especially the initial one's cost, is troublesome. It is a great response to my card. 8/10

A dark-haired human woman in a black sweater and cloak enters Simul's shop, carrying a white-covered notebook in her hands. A rope tied around her waist carries a glass cylinder around the size of a water bottle filled with some kind of white vapor. She takes a brief look around the shop before interacting with the shopkeep she finds. "Hello, greetings. My name is Leira Hoserai, I'm hoping to ask some questions about a Phyrexian source on this plane."
Fight Back Instant Target creature you control gains lifelink until end of turn. It deals damage equal to its power to target attacking creature an opponent does.

[1/1] Annotated Anthology - Really interesting design! CMC mattering in this way makes for some unique play patterns, and it's a very high power card if you play it just right. Big fan. 10/10 "Well it sounds like a good deal of tedium for simple curiosity. I won't bother you about it again." Lettie turns to leave, but stops in her tracks. At no point had she planned to reveal anything to Simul; after all, the purpose of these questions had been to assess the potential risk that Simul's research presented. But now, with the opportunity to properly understand that which bound her to life, that seemed far less important.
"On second thought..." Lettie began, but trailed off. Even with the opportunity to understand the life that now infected her, the truth might indeed by horrifying, and Simul would be party to it. Between the Phyrexian, the Machine, the Fae Court, and the Student, Lettie could not afford another enemy. Still, she felt some guilt, thinking on how Simul had perked up. It would not be as much of a risk, if a number of the threats were dealt with.
"Perhaps I will bother you about it in the future. For now, there are simply too many matters to attend to. I will see you again." She nods, and walks around a corner, before vanishing into a plume of foul fumes. Spark Tester — Excellent. It's a good response, and it can use loyalty counters, which is excellent flavour. I'm a bit worried about power, but otherwise, this is great. 9/10

Dravos Argentium Somewhere near where Simul was researching, a...hole, for the lack of a better word, opened up in the air nearby, ringed with flecking-blue aether as it grew to the size of a person, the person whose height it grew to match stepped through, before closing behind them. The person in question, of course, was a seemingly red-headed, cloaked figured, with a particularly intriguing sword at their side. An opportunity for research if any had ever presented itself. {Gift? Card - Aether Aperture}

Am I correct in understanding you've written enough concerning planeswalker sparks to fill thirty-seven volumes? It's a rather impressive accomplishment if you have, and I'd like to know more." We previously detailed this interaction, but since then, Simul has been retconned to have specific senses for planeswalkers, so this interaction is being updated. This time, before Lettie would have completed her approach, Simul would notice a change in the blind eternities; the blinding light of aether is eclipsed by a dark smog surrounding her. When she turns around, she can see a planeswalker's aether signature in the center of it, beating like a heart, in time with the pulse of the miasma.
Sorcery As an additional cost to cast this spell, sacrifice a permanent. Search your library, hand, and graveyard for a creature card with converted mana cost X or less, where X is 2 plus the sacrificed permanent's converted mana cost. Put that card onto the battlefield, then shuffle your library. Exile No Life is an Island.
