Hello everyone, I'm not good at writing long passages, so I'll get through this quickly. I asked around on some themes that aren't being used in Magic the Gathering and someone suggested Steampunk. I had seen someone else do a Battlebond theme project and it really piqued my interest. Thus, Battlepunk was born. The current mechanics I have for the set are, Smog artifact tokens which have At the beginning of your upkeep, you lose 1 life. 2, T: Destroy Smog.for example Overheat N
for example I like this mechanic since it fits with Steampunk while allowing me to make broken ideas balanced. Assist
Assist is a returning mechanic from the original Battlebond Example Symmetry
Symmetry AlternateCost (If you cast this spell for its symmetry cost, another target player creates a token that's a copy of it as it enters the battlefield.) Example This is a fun mechanic when I tested it and the GW archetype is built around it though it will be seen in 5c. Vehicles/Crew
Ok for this one, I added a bit of a twist to make it more Team friendly. I knew I wanted vehicles for a Steampunk set since they are a key factor in the books I read for researching this. Team Crew N (Players on your team may tap creatures they control with total power N or greater. This artifact becomes an artifact creature until end of turn.)For example I really like this version of Crew since it combines both the steampunk and Battlebond aspects of the set. Progress counters. I liked the idea of leveling ever since I saw that one extra turns card (https://edhrec.com/cards/lighthouse-chronologist) Since my Steampunk world is in its first years I thought something like this might be interesting, to show the "progress" of your team. The final version turned out like this. Though it seems like a memory issue, it is not extremely hard since it it right in front of you. With overheat and progress counters, Counter Manipulation might be seen in this set. BulwarkBulwark-If creatures your team controls have total toughness N or greater, EFFECT The archetypes UB is Tempo RG is Aggro WB is Toughness (Bulwark) WB is Nobel Tribal UR is Artificer Tribal GB is Tokens WG is Symetry UG is Draw 2 (like Izzet in Eldraine) RW is Vehicles RB is Artifact Aggro/Sacrifice So, there you have it. Thoughts? Also I don't know how to make a Plane Sculptors set. If someone could tell me, much appreciated. Thats where I'll put I'll the sets cards

Do I get a notification if someone talks in a thread I made? Specifically this one. There hasn't been much activity and I don't want to constantly come here and waste my time looking for something that doesn't exist.

Wow 136 people have viewed this; didn't think that many would. Also, is this the place to get recommendations and ideas on my set? or just to show people, not to get thoughts (136 is a big number, I'm just wondering since I'm new I'm not exactly sure)?

First of all adressing what came up in the other thread, I'm not really good at judging many cards at once
Still I think I might need to see more of your cards to really evaluate Progress counters - judging by the two cards I could find within the set I think it would be easier to think of a new artefact subtype (project, maybe?) instead. You could then drop the Level up frame (as much as I like it as well, it does cram the card quite a lot^^) and give them each one ability that works by defalut and have the second one "active" as long as your team controls a certain number of projects (also would probably best at a fixed number?).
Also whlie we're talking about mechanics: WotC don't keyword negative abilities anymore - because abilities on a card are supposed to make you feel good rather then make you go "the card would be better without this". I could still see you using one or two cycles of the Overheat mechanic (it is flavorful - and I have a soft spot for cards with downsides), but I wouldn't keyword it.

Daij_DjanMaybe for Overheat just as a few rares and some commons/uncommons? I'll also see what I can do with your other idea, is there a way for me to get notifications when someone talks in this thread?

Also, what is the problem with Overheat, I don't see how something like it wouldn't work, since this is a custom set, do I have to follow Wotcs guidelines, or should i?

@ PEacefulOtter: As far as I know, you only get a notification when someone either pings or quotes you..
Concerning your second question: That's one of those topics for endless debates As a general rule: Obviously you can do whatever you want with your set and don't have to follow any rules whatsoever - but many prople here like designing as close to WotC standards as possible. Personally I think deviating from their path is risky but can be done well (I actually broke one of their old rules myself with an older set) - even WotC sometimes does it as well after all - but I always suggest keeping in mind why the guideline/rule exists in the first place and how the issues breaking it can be adressed.
In this specific case, not keywording the ability would be the easiest choice - but then again as far as I can tell after what I've seen over the years, many of us designers view downsides on cards more positive than "normal players" anyway. So if you keep in mind and don't worry about these "normal players" potentially liking the mechanic less, then there's much less reason to worry anyway.

@dajidjan Hmm, ok, I'll have to check this place frequently then.
As for Overheat, I'll show it to some of my friends that don't make customs and see what they think.

So here's how I'm seeing it, the names of the set in quotes are the feel I'd expect for each set.
Set 1: Edremon -- "Steampunk Battlebond"
It's been 1,000 years since the last Inventor's fair, a backdrop for the revolution that led the plane of Kaladesh to where it is today. Unrestricted Aether access, the crux of the "perfect society" the renegades had so desperately wanted to create, was unsustainable. It was less than a decade before Aether was scarce and what was once powered by the magical substance became powered by coal, which was once considered dirty and largely a waste substance left in the Aethergeode mines. With the resource so abundant, the plane had come to depend on it, and with the shift away from Aether came a shift in society. The New Consul didn't last long, they fell alongside the Aether supply. In its place, a democratic government body was put in place, though over the centuries it has grown as corrupt and greedy as the first council.
Quicksmithing duels in this time shifted from an exhbitionary display of skill to a sort of back-alley style of brawling. Betting and attempting to fix fights is common and large fighting rings and "clubs" had developed. Of course, the general populous knew these fights happened, but many chose to stay away from them for fear of getting hurt, or getting in with the wrong group of people. The city's corrupt government makes it weak, and the real people who control the city are crime bosses operating extensive rings across the city. The common person might not notice them, but these rings are in the pockets and lives of every official, law officer, and prominent inventor in Ghirapur. Many are even responsible for controlling the Quicksmithing rings that have become such a popular form of entertainment for those with low enough standards, or large enough wallets, to watch them.
It is within this setting, as Ghirapur is expanding out into the wilds, that the tomb of an ancient artificer from long ago is uncovered, and within it are scrolls of the plane's largely-forgotten past. Namely, of an event called the inventor's fair. Upon learning of this, the government, not one to miss out on an opportunity to make a buck, and seeing it as their window to take back power, devise a plan: Make the quicksmithing duels that served as the Inventor's Fair's main entertainment, and were now so popular with the lowest and highest classes today, into a tournament, open to anyone, with a grand mystery prize for the winner. The prize in question? A key to city, the key that can open any door anywhere. Why would they choose such a prize? To lure crime rings out of the woodworks and persuade them to fight in the tournament. The winner would essentially be at the government's mercy until they handed over the key--which they never intended to do--and a new hierarchy of control would be established. With this plan in palce, they were quick to "leak" some information out about the prize, and word started spreading around town. Not only were crime syndicates etnering, but ordinary people, too! All for a chance at control over the city. Of course, the crime rings had a distinct advantage in numbers, strategy, and, of course, cheating. Could anyone outside these groups take the top prize from some of the most powerful people on the plane, or will one crime ring claim victory and, as they think, control over the city?
.
Set 2: Keys to Edremon -- "Welcome to the Big Time, Kid!" (Four-player draft-matters Conspiracy format)
What wasn't expected by any of the parties at the top of the tournament was for the keys to turn up missing completely. Nobody knew if they were stolen or bribed out of one of the officials at the top, but they were gone. Well, gone to everybody but the extensive rival crime rings that controlled the city. One boss had stolen them from the tournament, another from the first boss, and so on. Various rings began to rise and fall from power seemingly sporadically, control of the plane being yanked about among various parties. It's an all-out power struggle and the daily agenda includes espionage, cunning, and, most of all, a good plan. Even if it takes killing every goon of every other crime group, one is going to come out on top. In the world's most high-stakes game of keepaway, the question is: which one will it be?
Set 3: Edremon Restored "Take Kaladesh Back!" (Two-player, standard-legal set)
Among all the fighting, something incredible is discovered: a new source of Aether, rooted deep in the wilds of the plane. It seems to be self-replenishing and virtually unlimited, just as the New Council had hoped Aether would be all those years ago. Now, with this discovered, many aspiring inventors are wondering: can Edremon be restored to its once-glory as Kaladesh, the home of a bright aetherpunk metropolis that signified hope and the imagination and skill of inventors across the world?
Thought I might get down to some lore, so what are your thoughts?

Is it a good idea to tell the future of a plane? And give it my own twist, like I am doing with kaladesh. I know some people do it, but what do you guys think. SHould I?
