The card I chose was Pharika, god of Affliction. I aimed to try to find one of the gods to work on, and I dug around for which ones were found to be underwhelming. Pharika, one of the ones I actually own on paper as well, struck a cord with me because I also remember being really disappointed in finding her. Only being a creature when certain conditions are met is one of the Theros gods intentional weaknesses, but Pharika's secondary ability is where the disappointment is really at. In the reanimator colors she is making 1/1 deathtouches at the expense of your graveyard, or worse she is doing graveyard hate while giving your opponent free stuff. Now this isn't to say she is totally useless or anything, but definitely a lot more situationally useful. For her power up I decided to take advantage of the fact the phyrexianized gods of Theros still haven't been all revealed yet, and Pharika as a god of poison, disease and medicine she would make a perfectly fitting target.

Eron the Relentless, underpowered because 5-mana 5/2 haste is not very exciting for a legendary, and a triple- regenerate is pretty expensive (and off-color) by today's standards. Also wanted to make him into a more modern version to give him a stronger Rogue feel. Eron the Relentless Legendary Creature — Human Rogue Haste Whenever ~ deals combat damage, create a Treasure token. Boast — : ~ gains indestructible until end of turn. (Activate only if this creature attacked this turn and only once each turn.)“Eron would be much less of a hassle if only he were mortal.” —Reyhan, Samite Alchemist5/2 Note: The combat damage can be to anything. I was going to make it an "on attack" trigger, but it felt more flavorful as an "on damage" trigger.

Sure, it might not be one of the vanilla ones, but Gosta Dirk still is a legend from Legends -so I don't think I have much to explain concerning the power level
For the record: An evasion ability is an official term in the current Comp. Rules (see 509.1b). Basically your blockers may ignore abilities like menace or intimidate, whereas your own attackers ar completely unblockable as soon as they have an ability like flying or skulk.

So, I think of the proto-Elder dragons of Magic as an experiment. However it doesn't change the fact that most of them are bad, here is my take at Chromium, after it was dead his body was used as a planar bridge. What if it was ressurected.

Zahid, Genie of the Lamp is fine as a flying beatstick, but I think simplifying his thematic ability and making him a Djinn tribal commander just bumps him up to "pretty good."

Time to judge this. And whew, are these all bangers. {Spoiler}{Spoiler} Idea - Pharika was indeed situational, but this version makes it much better. Using the phyrexianization is a nice excuse, and the corrupted ability making it a creature is very proper, especially as the card can make toxic snakes. The phyrexian mana might make it too “cheap”, so tweaking on that might be necessary. vizionarius - You know how to hit my pauper commander itch, dontcha. The original indeed is blegh, but this is a nice edit. The boast is a good way of making it harder to block, and the treasure ability is quite modern design wise. Fun thing to do with it would be giving it first strike, as you can boast with the made treasure before it could possibly die itself. But leaving one red mana open should not be a hard thing to do anyhow. Daij_Djan - A nice upgrade, making its ability way better. Clarity might be hard as to what all counts as evasion, but the reminder text gives it as much clarification as it could get. I’d wonder if something alike would see print. Sanfonier of the Night - The Elder Dragons absolutely need an upgrade. Besides mister big bad dragon planeswalker of course. But this is a nice way to link Chromium’s lore to a new card, and its new mechanics. The free planar casting makes the three mana on upkeep also a lot more bearable. Jartis - Zahid was actually a legendary I was considering using as a commander one time, but as you said, it’s just a beatstick. There’s so much more to commanders nowadays. Going for a Djinn+artifact tribal is a nice and fresh way to go. So, the winner, all of you. But no, gotta be one. I’ll be going with Sanfonier of the Night for a banger new Elder dragon, that still kept the costs of being an elder dragon, but also having it do quite a bit more.

Maybe a bit much, but I want it to be a bit much. Haste on a monowhite card? It's been done before once, on another 8 mana legendary: Akroma, Angel of Wrath

Fair but at the same time that card’s main thing seems to be being keyword soup.

Ann Darien, Primal Bellow Legendary Creature - Elder Dragon : ~ gets +1/+0 until end of turn. : ~ gains trample until end of turn. : ~ gains vigilance until end of turn. : ~ gains lifelink until end of turn. 6/6 I was thinking about deathtouch, but I'd rather not put trample and deathtouch on the same card.

Thank you for the win Sanfonier of the Night ! Shame there was no feedback, but I guess it couldn't be helped. For the next challenge, make a commander with only (a) static abilities(y).

@ elchetibo : Small heads-up: Since ability-granting/removing effects (layer 6) sit in the layer above power/toughness-changing effects (layer 7), even enchanted with a Colossification your Jaggad won't grant a Blind Phantasm hexproof and unblockability - while on the other hand granting them to a Grizzly Bears even if there's a -1/-1 counter on Jaggad.
That's why while mechanics like these technically work, they're highly unintuitive - and therefore normally always used with activated or triggered abilities (attack trigger f.e.) so that layers don't matter.

I did not know about layers, thanks for the heads-up. So, it means even with a +1/+1 counter on it, Jaggad can't grant hexproof and unblockability to an Abzan Falconer ?

@ elchetibo : Yes, exactly. Basically the games checks whether Jaggad's ability should grant your other creatures the abilities before checking whether Jaggad's power might have gotten changed.
This however only applies to static abilities interacting (which in this case is kind of an issue given the challenge, I guess ), as soon as we're talking about activated or triggered abilities, layers don't matter. I think MaRo once explained this a bit with more examples when talking about Naja's "power 5 or more" theme back then - it's why Mosstodon has an activated ability f.e.
EDIT: See here for a more general text about layers. If you never heard about them, let's just say layer rules are known to be notoriously complicated (and as far as I've been told a beloved part of judge tests for that reason )

Am I missing something? Edit: thanks for the short explanation btw

@ elchetibo: This might have something to do with the ability to blocking not being checked constantly but rather only while announcing blockers - but to be honest, I'm really not sure. Not a judge myself, and definitely not that deep into the layer stuff
I basically mostly remember the old Naya article and why it's therefore difficult / not good to tie an ability granting ability to power/toughness. Not sure I'd even recognize other layer issues at all

Not sure I'd even recognize other layer issues at all I was waiting on your reply about this because I spent some time trying to wrap my head around this too, and came up with the same intuition as you, that blockers are declared at a specific timepoint and not continously. But I'm having some trouble clearly justifying it. I'll think/read on it more and share what I come up with. (Note: I too am not a Judge, but I am a "Rules Advisor," so in theory I should know this stuff, lol.)

Feel free to do that!
Another approach I came up with after pondering about it is how Layer 6 is all about adding/removing abilities - but blocking (like attacking) isn't an ability as the game uses the term to begin with, no? Champion of Lambholt doesn't (continuesly) "remove an ability", it only restricts blocking during the declare blockers step - so it doesn't fit into the Layer 6 description..
Or I might go completely off the rails here and dig myself into a hole I'll regret tomorrow morning.. xD
Ah, you - shut it.
But oh well: Time to catch some sleep for now (manga artwork by Satoshi Mizukami)

Stasia, Keeper of Time Legendary Creature - Human Wizard Phasing Permanents don't untap during their controllers' untap steps. 2/2 Edit: Initially I had it skip the untap step, like Stasis; but then this would never phase out since phasing happens during untap. Note: Since phasing happens as the first thing during untap, this will get phased out first during your first untap step after this is on the battlefield, so you will not skip your first untap.
