Lettie awakens face down and with a face full of feathers, tears streaming down her cheeks. In her hands are the remains of a pillowcase. She can feel her heart beating through her ribs, and blood traveling past every joint in her body. It takes a few moments for her to realize that she's not going to get much sleep tonight. She ponders whether she would be better off getting an early start on her apothecary, or re-reading her favorite encyclopedias. Lettie has unlocked "Create a Vial token." (It’s an artifact with “, Sacrifice this and another permanent: Draw a card. Activate this ability only during your turn.”)

Cloudkill: 8/10. It's one of those cards that seems weak at low values of X but good at high values of X, which I'm not a huge fan of. The squirrel screeches upon being caught, and tries to wriggle its way free as Lettie approaches with the bottle. Upon making contact with the cloud, the squirrel screeches louder, but differently. This screech is slightly deeper, as the oil visibly reacts. It moves in a blob separately from the squirrel, as if the squirrel were trapping it as much as the stems and grasses were. After a few seconds, it latches onto the plants gripping its former host, though it does not reach out of the cloud before beginning to drip to the ground, where it remains inanimate. It wouldn't take too much effort to track where the squirrel came from, should Lettie be interested in the non-immediate threat. Weak Point Observer

Corrosive vials are still necessary for fighting constructs, but now she includes a fair portion of brimstone clouds in her preparations, and she takes a single vial of pale morningstar powder with her. She sets out to track the squirrel's path, ready to eradicate any Phyrexian life she encounters.Natural Mistake Instant Destroy target artifact or enchantment. Its controller creates a Vial token. Lettie snarls when Seiva raises her voice, and she takes several moments to think over what Seiva just said, before she decides to stop overthinking it and just rely on the literal statement. She speaks slowly in a tired monotone, and with odd prosody. "I have an inert sample. I'll return it- I'll return in a moment." She planeswalks on the spot to where she has stored the vial of oil, and quickly finds it, but she takes a few minutes to cry and recompose her mask before returning.
Once she returns, she begins to recite a rehearsed explanation, in a way that sounds mostly natural. "This is an inert form of glistening oil, following alkylation. In other words, this is oil that I've killed, for it is a living substance. Normally, you would see it moving of its own accord." She holds up the vial, but keeps it relatively distant as a precaution. "In my studies of the planes following my ignition, I quickly learned of Mirrodin, whose entire ecosystem and civilization was destroyed by this oil. It is infectous, and alters both body and mind to be dependent on it, as well as produce an excess quantity of it. Behavior of the infected converges on a new form of Phyrexian, but one far more homogenous and sadistic than the sort that Khon Vasq is. Their only purpose is to create more Phyrexians through spreading this oil, and to cause great suffering as they do so. If one of you is infected by this, they will no longer be the person you knew. You'll have to destroy them, and we'll have to eradicate every trace of the oil. Above all, it must not make it off of the Arena. I've already observed birds carrying the infection, so a wide scale outbreak is inevitable at this point." Lettie neglects to mention how such an infection was first delivered.Northshire Galloper Creature — Human Noble Northshire Galloper must be blocked if able. Northshire Galloper can't be blocked by more than one creature. 3/3 Let's cooperate. Late Warning — I don't feel like this is anything above common, and with this sort of costing, it could even be unconditional. 7/10

"That's a word I recognize. This is... the first time I'm hearing any further details. There was an invasion against a plane near Volaria that was annihilated... I was under the impression that was all that remained, though. Clearly not. I'll... I'll make sure to talk to you again once we have some safeguards in place. You know, compensation and whatnot." There's a few mumbles that sound roughly like Seiva talking to herelf. I wish I had more so I could do bioaetherics with it, but I definitely can't obtain that like this.
Haia raises her arm to her chest and lightly bows her head. Unlike her general posture, this motion seems routine and practiced. "Th-thank you, Miss Lettie. We should, uh... We should go deal with... this..."
Northshire Galloper only being able to be blocked by one creature is an interesting limiter; normally that second line of text is an upside but in this case it seems to be somewhere in between. 8/10

The bolt strikes Lettie in a leg, and she gasps from the shock. She feels the bolt with one hand, fearing it to be infused with deadly magic or poison, but finds neither. Confused, but still worried, she glares at the faerie, and can't help but let out a cackle when she sees it conjuring a twig. The quaint little creature had thought to evade her, but it had only drawn closer to Lettie's ceiling. Pointing an accusation with a finger, she commands a rafter to become thorned ivy, and crush the faerie in its grip. Regardless of whether that succeeds, she makes her way to Briar's last known location, using her tables as support.
The attack crushes the fresh fae. Its bow and stunted bolt clatter to the ground.
At Briar's last location, a mass of pulp hides under a table, a strange construction that might be mistaken as an insect nest.
Enchantment At the beginning of your upkeep, you lose 1 life, create a 1/1 black Faerie creature token with flying, then put your choice of a +1/+1, lifelink, deathtouch, or hexproof counter on a Faerie you control. Dream's End - assuming that's supposed to be base power minus 2. because of layers this is rarely different from just -2/-2, which i guess means its fine power wise. 8/10

Without any more sounds or signs of Briar, Lettie dismisses the smoke so that she can see again, and soon notices the nest. Briar's gone. This might be a trick involving fae travel through flora. Moving between nests would be a sensible extension of that... or she could be a planeswalker. In any case, this must be destroyed. The thought of burning the nest immediately leaps to Lettie's mind, before being followed by consideration of the consequences of lighting a fire in one of her own shops. Bitter stars, I'm already using enough of my brimstone clouds to combat the phyresis, and now I need to waste supplies on exterminating these pests. Well, it shouldn't take too much on such a small, still thing. Supporting herself on the counter tops, Lettie moves to grab a brimstone cloud from a supply cabinet nearby, and releases a small portion of it beneath the nest. This way, she might even be able to pry apart the remains afterward.Solemn Snitch Creature — Faerie Cleric Flying If an effect would put one or more counters on a creature, it puts that many -1/-1 counters on that creature instead. 1/1 Fae Nest — I think this is obnoxiously strong, but it's a great gold design. 8/10

Plus I always like some good "if it would die, exile it instead". The forest itself seems to let out a shriek that is hard to tell whether one actually hears it, or if it is just their imagination. Blackened dirt that was stirring and expanding comes to rest upon contact with the cloud. As the brimstone settles throughout the small patch of forest, the ichor lies defeated by the solution, though one strange spot remains. While much of the ichor had been thinly mixed among the dirt, on the east side of the forest was a black semi-sphere with the consistency of dried paint, covering a 5-meter radius circle of the ground. "If I ever make it back to Phyrexia, I'll have to warn them about you." says a tired, robotic voice from within the sphere. Containment Sphere Artifact , , Sacrifice ~: If target creature would leave the battlefield this turn, return it to its owner's hand instead.

Lettie vanishes as the cloud spreads to its full extent, and only returns after several minutes have passed and it has settled into the soil, while wearing a shawl soaked in neutralizers. With such a wide area to cover, she likely will not reach Dieule's location for a considerable amount of time. Unless Dieule is going to remain in place for the entire time, Lettie will find the patch of living glistening oil, unable to spread into the brimstone soaked surroundings, and she will test the effectiveness of pale morningstar powder on it. If she finds the semi-sphere, she'll test the effectiveness against it instead.//Pale morningstar powder is essentially magically enhanced white phosphorus. Lampsnuffer Boggan Creature — Faerie When Lampsnuffer Boggan enters the battlefield, you may destroy target artifact or enchantment with converted mana cost 1 or less. 2/2 Containment Sphere — Could have sworn that was already a card name. Anyway, this effect is weak in the grand scheme of things, since in most cases it will be a recur with a time window, while costing more than an unconditional recur. Still a sensible use of phi mana. 7/10

Sure. I think it's going to be super situational, but it's an interesting sideboard. When Lettie returns, the semi-sphere has collapsed, leaving a dead membrane of oil covering a dying puddle, with the machine inside nowhere to be found. Any tracks it might have made have been covered by the settled brimstone clouds. After applying morningstar powder, the oil, both live and dead, ignites, and slowly burns away. (I'm not an expert on phosphorus or sulfur, so I don't know what else would catch on fire after the oil burns up. But I assume that after it does, other flammable things would ignite.)

Ani enters Lettie's nearby shop, multitasking as much as he can manage: Reading passages of a textbook on his transceiver about aether in disease control under his breath, taking notes about it on a separate physical notebook, looking up and being amazed by Lettie's shop, trying to figure out how to word the questions he wanted to ask, and also trying to make sure he doesn't trip over or walk into anything. The wispy golden magic of an Entelan spell glows in his eyes. He doesn't say anything other than the mutterings of the textbook, but spends an amount of time looking up at the shelves, trying to figure out what anything does.Leira also enters the shop, but pushes herself to one side of the doorway and says nothing. Her eyes also dart around, but in a much less curious and more threatened manner than Ani's.
Rapid Education Instant Rather than pay Rapid Education's mana cost, you may pay and sacrifice two artifacts. Draw three cards.
(There's a few instances of 3UU draw 3 upside rares, so I figure that part is fine)

Haia and the head advisor are going to go find people that know more about, like, the other parts of it, but I'm supposed to cure and inoculate and I can't do that yet so I need help."

Maybe we can make little cells of elemental energy that act like white blood. If we do that, they could make anti-Phyrexian stuff on their own and keep themselves alive by-- wait, they wouldn't have aether. Okay, never mind that. Back to the first plan then; just make pockets of elemental energy that'll float around in the body until they run into the Phyrexian oil and then have them flip back into aether? That can't be too hard, summons get way easier when they're smaller. It'd just be a little while of sitting down and getting it all right, thank the Spirits we have spells for that, then all we'd need is to make the cells match the oil. Then it's just about testing it-- Which means we need a sample of some sort to run tests with? It shouldn't be able to get out of aetherglass and we could kill it if it tries, so that's not too hard, right? Then it just comes to getting it. How do we...?"// Ani seems to start sketching something out, but it quickly gets scribbled out. Then he sketches out a circle with a jagged edge on it, and a line that matches the jagged edge.
"Oh, maybe that works. If aetherizing the phyrexian oil makes more aether, the thing could turn that aether into another cell so the person wouldn't ever stop being immune. I think that's how aether reactors work? I don't really get it, but maybe someone else does. Maybe that's an idea. "Not autonomous in terms of thought, but autonomous in that they would not require attention from the caster in order to persist. From the sounds of it, perhaps even viruses could be thought of as autonomous. However, the distinction has less meaning than you would think." She pauses as considers carefully how much detail she should give Ani. "Any persistent and resilient system can be thought of as alive, even machines, even communities, even the multiverse itself. It would be for the best if these elemental cells, as you call them, were ultimately not resilient, and doomed to fade. After all, aetherization can only yield an output of aether strictly less than the input, otherwise any amount of aetherization could have cataclysmic results, logically speaking. It could be a good measure to prolong inoculation however. Indeed, a series of delays of the inevitable would be for the best..." Lettie trails off, before deciding that she needs to be more direct when explaining the problem.Lettie straightens her posture, and looks at Ani. "Listen, Ani. Whatever approach we adopt, these cells must not be alive. You're a bright young man, and in many ways, you remind me of someone I..." Her gaze briefly becomes unfocused, before she shakes her head and continues the script. "That I... once was. But listen, and be warned. If you create something that's alive, then it can not be entirely controlled, and may in time become a massive problem in and of itself. I know that having to recast the inoculation seems like an inefficient solution, but it is far preferable to the prospect of these cells multiplying out of control, and perhaps becoming defective and dangerous. Even your current idea for renewal is potentially dangerous, considering what may happen if a sample were to interact with a considerable mass of aether, such as those The Project handles on a regular basis. Consider also, what may happen if that version of the summon were to inhabit a volarian. They could be starved of all inbound aether, and perish. Any kind of renewal through aether would have to be specific, narrow, and controlled, I hope you understand that. If you rush for a breakthrough, you may commit a grave mistake. Don't create something you'll regret."She sighs again, somewhat tired, and lays out a pen and sheet of paper on the counter, with a carbon sheet to match. "Now then, I suppose that's enough about that. With a general strategy in mind, it's past time that we indeed sat down, and began detailing these cells. That will largely be your work, of course. I'm better versed in non-aetheric biologies, and I have some work to do. I'll be within reach though, if you have any more questions." I think it developmentally checks out too. 10/10 Ani adds more to his sketch while he listens to Lettie, noting drawbacks and problems that would need to be solved, before scratching this new sketch out, clearing his screen, and beginning again. "Yeah, if we aren't immune and need to use this on ourselves, that's a big problem. Alright, slim it down again..." Even after Lettie walks away, he talks himself through all his logic and continues to start by sketching on his transceiver. Leira, while still present, is only kind of paying attention and is doing something on her transceiver.
"Doesn't look like there's a safe way to make the inoculation permanent. Don't want it to be able to go off on its own, and can't have it hurt us. Okay, plan A again, then: Cell exists, what does it need to do? Okay." Ani pauses while he redraws his circles. "The cell needs to be able to detect oil -- that's pretty simple if we have a sample of it -- and then destroy it. We want to try to destroy it using aether, which means the spell needs to be able to disassemble itself or create aether. Nope, not create aether, we just talked about why that was a bad idea. We also want it to only disassemble itself the right amount, or it's going to overreact and hurt the person anyways." Ani stares at his transceiver a bit more. "That sounds like logic processing. I don't know how to do that. Uh... Hm..." Ani looks around aimlessly. "I guess I could try to learn that."
"Or." Another single word from Leira, said without looking up from her transceiver.
"Or what?" As Leira looks up at him, Ani looks back down at his sketch.
"Once you've got a plan figured out, you could send it off to a logic processor. You wouldn't try to learn how to engineer a core when you have Estova who could do it faster and easier, would you?"
"I thought they were all busy." Ani looks up and down again. "It's fine, I could figure it out."
"Over multiple years, sure. We don't have that. If there isn't anyone available, I'm certain that Master Sara would do it herself. It's better to focus on the things you already know how to do and be ready to do them."
Pause. "Alright, so I need to figure this out. Cell. It needs logic processing to detect oil, and then some amount of processing and M.E. to be able to partially deconstruct itself, if that's a thing we can do. It needs to be able to run calculations based on the amount of oil... and it needs to be something that can be moved through plants and stuff too. Huh, I guess all of this is spellcrafting that I can't do."
"Your role as our bioaetherist is probably closer to ensuring that this all happens and happens properly. You can't obtain samples because of the dangerous nature of this... pathogen? And you can't do the spellcrafting to make an entirely new spell out of nowhere yet, but you can tell everyone what you need to make it work and then make it work." Ani starts to try to say something, but it cut off. "The first step is getting a plan that will work if you have the pieces."
Ani turns and starts writing his sketch out onto the duplicate paper. "Oh, and the spell needs a physical form that can travel around. Or does it? ... Wait, yeah, it needs to exist somewhere or it won't work as a solve-the-world answer. I guess we could make enchantments that could do it for an area, but that doesn't help people that walk outside that area, so that's later. Okay, cool."
A few minutes pass before Ani taps on the door to the following room with a finished sheet of paper, mostly consisting of a shaded circle with text around it indicating where Ani would have to go to get the behaviours he wants.. "Hi, Miss Lettie, I wanted to check with you to make sure we weren't about to make any more big mistakes. I need to send something like this off to a material aetherist and a logic processor so we could actually learn how to cast these spells, but they should handle everything. Oh, and also, I need to ask if you know somewhere that a combat caster would be able to obtain a live sample so we can make sure this works?"Cyan Cytoplasm seems like the logical step from Snek. 9/10 Interplanar Assembly Enchantment If a noncreature spell you control would resolve, you may instead exile it with a component counter on it. Ani adds more to his sketch while he listens to Lettie, noting drawbacks and problems that would need to be solved, before scratching this new sketch out, clearing his screen, and beginning again.
At the beginning of your upkeep, draw a card for each name among cards exiled with component counters on them. Lettie takes the carbon copy, and looks it over. "Let me just get my bearings here. Before I forget, you can get a live sample from anything infected. Of course, I've killed every sample I've seen on sight, for which I apologize," She deadpans. "Combat casters can follow sightings of an arachnid machine, as it's the primary source. Now then, let's see..." She rereads a portion of the plans. "My first thought would have been alchemical markers for the detection, but those have so many possibilities for false positives... though this 'logic processing' of yours can be quite narrow and specific, which is ideal for..."Lettie stares through the sheet, frozen, for at least a minute, before struggling to continue. "Just... be cer...tain that Han- the processor understands con- the consequences of unfor- uninten...ded behavior. We don't want some...thing living." She blinks away the threat of tears, and speaks haltingly. "Besides that... risk, there's nothing similar for materials. Lettie hurriedly grabs some supplies, and planeswalks to another shop.Choleric Corrosion Instant As an additional cost to cast this spell, put a -1/-1 counter on a creature you control. Destroy target artifact or enchantment. Interplanar Assembly — This gives you excess value for anything less than four mana, but it's unbearably slow and vulnerable. I felt like I had misread it, the first time, but it's still usable. 7/10

test ...It seemed someone, or something, had managed to slip past Lettie's alarms at one at her shops, as a a dull red, stone-like cat was resting before an open book, tail flicking at the pages with each dream-induced sweep. A short, politely written message was nearby, written in fair blue ink. "Consider this an apology. - S," it said, and included with it was a pair of parchment sheets describing and detailing how the...cat, worked. {Gift Card - Cinnabar Familiar}

Lettie gives the familiar the side-eye before she looks through the description and instructions, one hand still holding the book shut. There must be at least some substance and truth written which with to detect the deceit.Faering Rite Instant Creatures you control gain " : Add one mana of any color." until end of turn. Cinnabar Familiar — Not the most gold design, but it's functional, if getting close to the limit of what can be printed at its cost. 8/10

test The feline merely yawned, not particularly dissuaded by Lettie's shooing. It did stand up to track the book in her hand, and met her gaze if she looked back to examine it further. The note, unfortunately, was brief, but spoke plainly of the familiar's purpose, which was to provide some amount of mental clarity when consuming information found in printed material or when putting thoughts to paper. A useful asset, for one who might be faced with doing such things constantly. It of course, required some form of bonding to take effect, which it was noted this one in particular wasn't...yet. The cat merely stared back, expectantly. {Response Card - Studious Serval} Faering Rite: Cool. 9/10

Seiva shows her face once again to Lettie's shop. This time, however, she is missing a few things. Haia is not with her. She seems to have left her clipboard and notebooks at home. She also isn't wearing her standard uniform, instead wearing a much less official black-and-blue plaid sweater and black cloak. Rather than knocking on the door as she has in the past, she walks in and begins familiarizing herself with a new version of the world.Excess Weakness Enchantment - Aura Flash, enchant creature When Excess Weakness enters the battlefield, tap enchanted creature. Enchanted creature gets -2/-0 and its activated abilities can't be activated.

I've already got over a hundred cats to house, which don't go sniffing around books that are none of their business. Well, the first thing's first..." Lettie grabs The Lotus Hunter's Almanac from a nearby shelf, and hands it to the familiar, to give it something to do while she exchanges the books in the shop with those spread among the others, until she has removed any potentially sensitive information from the familiar's reach. Then, she sits down to assess its progress. "You'd have been wonderful to have around when I was the Little Doctor. Now you're just a liability..." Lettie steeples her fingers, and rests her head against them. There was little point to getting nostalgic about the demeaning persona she had been assigned. Those were nothing more than simpler times, and they were still awful. "How... awful it must be, a living thing, created only to read for others, and given to someone who has no need for you. You needn't worry about me. Just stay here and read to your little heart's content."Familiar Handbook Artifact , Tap an untapped creature you control: Add one mana of any color. , , Tap an untapped creature you control: Draw a card. Studious Serval — Seems to be on the slightly weak side. Cool for certain things like Convoke though, and is a nice way to build on this chain. 8/10

testThe feline simulacrum followed Lettie with its eyes for a moment before returning to one of the books strewn around, curiously turning the pages without even touching. The printed ink and crisp paper reflected in its opaline eyes, it set about reading...for a long, long time, it seemed. Familiar Handbook: 10/10, I really like this neat design.

Lettie seemed less inclined to immediately answer today than usual, and Seiva was left to examine the shop for at least a few minutes uninterrupted. Lettie's stock hadn't changed much since Seiva had first seen it, but the eclectic collection of books had grown considerably, and it seemed Lettie was now using furniture properly made for its purpose rather than improvising.
Eventually, Lettie walks in from outside, with one of her red kerchiefs drawn over her ears and a black mobcap layered over top, and her shawl draped over her shoulders. She speaks in a tone flattened in hopes of sounding less hostile. "I have been checking with Ani daily; you needn't have come all this way. Where is your escort, and why are you here?"Neutralizing Mantle Instant Target creature gains hexproof until end of turn. Create a Vial token. (It’s an artifact with “, Sacrifice this and another permanent: Draw a card. Activate this ability only during your turn.”) Excess Weakness — Seems about right. 9/10
