Awake. He had been handed not just a living specimen, but an awake one. " Disgusting," he said, although it was unclear if he was talking to the girl, about her, about the conditions she was in, or something else. Marston approached the girl, retrieved the note, looked at it, flipped it over to see if there were any other details, before coming to the conclusion that yes, this was it. Marston wasn't evil. At least, he didn't consider himself to be evil. He certainly didn't have the draw to engage in moustache twirling antics, or acts of violence for the sake of violence. But he also wasn't bound by typical moral codes. If his partner had given him the subject asleep, he wouldn't have had any difficulty keeping them asleep during a vivisection. But given she was awake, that did complicate things somewhat. " Here's how this is going to go," his voice laced with professionalism and a detached boredom that sounded inhumane, " I'm going to conduct a brief initial examination and interview. If you behave, this process is entirely painless. If you fail to behave, I cannot make that same promise. But one way or another, I am going to conduct some research. Is this clear?" With that, he retrieved some equipment, and began to scan the girl for chronotemporal instabilities. From there, he would figure out what types of mana she was attuned to, if she had a latent spark, and some other general bio-magical data. After that, a verbal interview was in order. Her eyes dart around the room and her restraints. She closes her eyes for a minute, then a muffled scream comes from the ice mask. The ice around her arms slowly tints red at her attempt to planeswalk.
Her head falls back down as she cries, the tears freezing as they fall.

" Ah, excellent. You can communicate without me needing to remove some of your bonds. That makes things simpler." Marston's voice softened slightly, as if he was trying to calm the scared girl down. " No need to worry, we're almost done with this process. I've acquired most of the information I need, all that's left is a brief discussion, and then a biopsy that you'll be in stasis for. There will be no pain, no risk, and no long term harm. Trust me when I say that your life is something that I'd prefer to preserve if able."He paused to let the girl take it in. So, let's start this interview simply: Have you ever time traveled? If so, what direction? If you've traveled both directions, was this simple or difficult? Did it resemble planeswalking?" Iterate Instant Choose any number of permanents or cards in revealed zones. For each type of counter on those permanents or cards, put an additional one of those counters on them. As is, I still think it feels a bit disjointed, as far as schemes go, but its neat. 8/10

The girl trembled, whether from fear or the ice it was hard to tell. She closed her eyes for several silent seconds before the voice finally returned.
Forward, and back to now.
Time works weird here. People from different times are here together. Sometimes I can follow them back home.
I think it only works planeswalking.
Her eyes snapped back open and found Marston's. Why is there ice? Who is interested? What's a biopsy?

" Interesting, interesting." Marston quickly made a note of her answers. Time travel tied to planeswalking was promising, it being tied to the Arena in particular was less so. His work needed to be universalizable. On the other hand, the fact she'd jaunted both forward and backward without consequence was a notable improvement. " I'll answer your questions, but in exchange I hope you'll continue to keep this interview pleasant." " I can't disclose the identity of my collaborator, the person who secured you, as I do not have it. I assume for this reason, in fact. The ice is something they left you with, not something I created or caused." If he had been responsible for securing her, he likely would've frozen her in time, although now he was curious if that would've worked. " A biopsy is a medical procedure where I remove some amount of tissue from you in order to closely examine it. During that time, you'll be unconscious, unable to feel pain. Once I've retrieved the tissue sample, I'll wake you once more." " So, back to my questions. Does this time travel seem to come naturally, or is it a trick you learned? Do you think you could do it without following someone home? And finally, is there a focus involved? An item or material that helps you travel through time." Burning Brilliance Instant Until end of turn, whenever you draw a card, Burning Brilliance deals 1 damage to any target. Draw a card. Pact of Enlightenment — 10/10. Simple and clean. cajun

Marston was not an unreasonable man. But he also wasn't a patient one. The girl's reactions to the proposed biopsy were understandable, albeit somewhat disturbing. It didn't sound like she was just worried because she was scared of pain, it sounded like something was wrong with her biology. This intrigued Marston, but there was a voice in the back of his head urging caution. He was good at suppressing that voice. " You didn't answer me. Does that mean you're no longer cooperating? That would be a problem." He flexed his hand, and sparks of blue energy danced around it. He was prepared to put her in stasis and operate without her cooperation, but he wanted to give one last chance. Stutter Out Instant Choose one: - Counter target spell unless its controller pays 2.

(dubiously uncommon but I think this is fine) A Greater Threat Looms — 8/10. Its fine, but like....really painfully boring. Maybe it's unfair to ding based on that?

On Marston's travels through the arena, Marston finds a man in what looks like his late 20s - early 30s, dressed in a blue clock with golden flourishes around the edge of it, intently looking in what looks like a notebook. As you approach, you looks up, now alert to your presence. "Hello! It's good to see someone new," he says while placing his book down, "My name is Henry Brayden, I'm from dominaria." he says while changing his sitting posture and fidgeting with his book, "Are you new around here? I haven't seen you before; Although you could say I'm new around here too."Wizard's Tome Artifact , : Draw a card, then discard a card

As the spell launched from Karina, Marston flicked his wrist, and the blue sparks surrounded Karina, launching her backwards towards a wall. His eyes followed the invisible spell as his natural affinity for magic tried to comprehend it. Was it an attack? No, it was leaving. A distress signal. Things were about to get very interesting. Marston barely glanced up from his work. Newcomer. Self identifies as law enforcement. She drew up a spell, projectiles, and then she finally took Marston's focus away. An icicle flying towards him, intent on separating him from the girl. That wouldn't do at all. Well, what better to counter ice with, he thought, and red sparks surrounded him in a warm glow that Karina would be able to feel through the stasis. Marston rarely let the impulsive side of him loose, he was largely calculating. But sometimes, " You just have to get reckless." A burst of flame erupted from Marston, the heat of the forge within his heart. If the icicle didn't vaporize, it certainly would melt and slow down, giving Marston a window to cast a spell that disrupted the bonds holding it together and granting the woman control over it. It vaguely reminded him of sparring, back in the days where he would visit The Academy. It was something he was good at. Good enough that he could mostly retain the focus needed to complete his experiment. He dismissed a small hole in the stasis field, instead electing to freeze some of the flesh surrounding his incision point in time. He noticed a slight breeze drifting into the field. Oh, he'd forgotten to leave air holes. Well, an error on his part, but one that was fixed. Marston lowered the scalpel towards the girl's body, blue sparks swirling around him. The flames lick at the condensed aether in my ice. The flames, like any other, are all composed by the same simple material: magic. I don't understand mana, but I do understand aether. And really, that's close enough for me.
I'm not letting you freely hurt our child. I'll make you stand down. I'll make you back off.// A rapidly increasing concentration of aether attempts to grasp at the magic holding Marston's fire spell together while a second frost shard is let loose. (Guest System) For some reason, Khon's thoughts stray to that little explorer girl. She hadn't been on the Arena much lately, spending more and more time with that other child. She was in good hands, and certainly not under the knife of some mad doctor, paralyzed in fear.
Where did that thought come from?
He can almost feel the doctor's presence, as if they were standing over him.
Before he can dismiss it, he hears a single word in his soul."Help!"Call for Aid Instant Cast this spell only during combat before blockers are declared and only if a creature is attacking you. Put a permanent card from your hand onto the battlefield. It gains lifelink. At the beginning of your next end step, sacrifice that permanent. (Not putting a response to this on my own board since it's a guest system attack, and the actions taken would direct me here anyway. Good card, though - probably could do with costing less, maybe even less given the restrictions. 9/10)Khon pauses for a moment as the odd thoughts come to mind, unsure exactly what spurred him to consider Karina Oblay at this time - let alone the possibility of her being in such an odd predicament. The call for help, resonating through his soul, makes him realize what it is... that they are not his thoughts, but perhaps hers. Drawing his glaive and boltcaster both, he focuses on the beacon that he gave to the young explorer, vanishing into the Blind Eternities for a moment before reappearing elsewhere on the Arena. He appears facing one of the Volarian women he met in the incident involving VIA - not their leader, Sara, but the other. Seiva, I believe her name was... He quickly notes that she seems to be in possession of Karina's beacon, in addition to the one he gave her after that incident, before noticing the shard of ice that she sends hurling across the grassy field. Following its path, he sees a man standing with a scalpel, above what appears to be an operating table... a table that Karina is bound to. His eyes narrow, and he begins striding forward across the field, calling out to the man. "You will release Karina Oblay immediately, planeswalker, if you value your life." He fires a single shot from his boltcaster, just to the side of the man's head, to emphasize his ultimatum. As Seiva's attacks intensened, and she began to meddle with Marston's magics, he switched tactics. The second ice spear hurdled towards him and shattered a few feet in front of him, hitting a new wall of stasis air. Now, there was a field of stasis a couple feet in front of Marston as well as the other stasis field around Karina. And alarmingly, it didn't seem to make him miss a step. While Marston had skill as an engineer, and a fair bit in disrupting magic or brutal shows of raw magical force, this stasis, this time manipulation, was at the core of his specialty. It wasn't just something he could do to lock individuals down, it stretched far beyond that. He began to hum slightly as the scalpel slipped through Karina's flesh, guided by an expert hand, cauterizing the body as it passed through. It wouldn't hurt. Not yet, at least. Once he lifted the stasis around the affected area, that would likely change. A loud thunk noise, as a projectile shattered against the stasis, drew Marston's attention away from the operation, to the new foe. And instantly, his vision went red. Living metal, of a familiar design. His face curled into a snarl. " Phyrexian. This girl is a phyrexian asset?" It was obvious she wasn't a phyrexian herself, but the fact he was being threatened by one to release her was damning evidence to be sure. Marston turned away from the table, and threw the scalpel off to the side. Karina was still trapped in stasis, but he didn't need to worry about her for now. And the stasis was still holding at least for now, which gave him enough time to say words he'd wanted to say for a while. " I doubt you know me, phyrexian, although you should. My name is Marston Charros, and you took all the things that made Dominaria worthwhile from me." Marston pulled off his cloak, casting it off to the side as well. There was a different air to him now, a focus that hadn't been present prior. " I hear that your people lost. I was disappointed to hear that, I had hoped I'd be able to crush you myself. I'm overjoyed at this opportunity." From a pocket, he produced a small trinket, a bauble covered in gears, and began to channel mana into it. Blue sparks surrounded the gears, which began shifting, interlocking, and building. " So, let's play a game. One of them that we used to do at The Academy," venom laced his words, "called Show and Tell. I'll show you this project I've been tinkering with, and you'll show me how you die." He threw the bauble at the stasis field, which dropped in the bauble's wake. As the object flew through the air, it started expanding, building out and out and out, until it exploded into a full sized monstrosity. Between Marston and Khon stood a Colossus, thirty feet tall, and made out of a dark metal that gleamed in the sunlight. Call for Aid: Darksteel Colossus (M10).
Countering both cards with this: Drink Oil Like Blood Instant Drink Oil Like Blood can't be countered. Destroy target artifact. You gain life equal to its converted mana cost. Fizzling Aether — Pretty clean design, I like the design space of C as a psuedo kicker. 10/10Steel Centurion — Shouldn't the "or" be an "and" in case a creature has both first strike and double strike? Card is a pretty cool way to do first-er strike, but I don't love a 2/4 first strike creature that any deck can run in limited. 8/10

My attack is parried by a field of condensed air. It feels similar to the stasis that's been placed on Karina too... Amazing. But also terrifying. I don't think I can fight against this... Maybe I don't need to. I sweep my finger in a circle and my remaining two shards disappear. I set the spear down that I was carrying for Karina. I try to approach, carefully, trying not to do anything that may carry me as hostile. At that moment, the person's attention is drawn away by a harsh metallic sound. There's that being again, the one who gave me his beacon during the conflict with Empress VIA. I never got a name."Phyrexian. This girl is a Phyrexian asset?"That sounds wrong no matter how I put those words together, but I can't stop my eyes from widening at the word 'Phyrexian'. I tap a message to Leira, telling her not to ready herself to fight. If there's a chance I can resolve this peacefully, I'm going to take it. I think through all the things I can say, but as I do, I overhear some things the person is saying to the new being.
"You're a Phyrexian," I mutter under my breath. He doesn't seem to act like most Phyrexians I've heard of... Maybe one or two that Arina told stories about that defected. I suppose that's a problem that the new being's going to figure out, though. I have to focus on getting Karina out safely. I'm sure the Phyrexian can figure his own things out.
And I certainly don't want to be anywhere near the large construct when it starts trying to attack the Phyrexian.
"The girl," I say, loud enough for the researcher to hear me as I continue to slowly approach him. "She's not a Phyrexian. She's a young Entelan girl. She trains with an organization to help shut down interplanar threats. She has a girlfriend at home who's terrified that something might have happened to her."
I keep glancing at the large construct and the comparatively small Phyrexian.
"If you let me take her home, I can leave you to fight this Phyrexian. I just want to guide her home."
I don't know that lifegain stapled to it makes it particularly black? It feels more like a white effect. Otherwise, neat. 8/10

8/10 I agree with Windy that this card really doesn't feel , necessarily - the life gain aspect feels tacked on, and honestly makes me think more than anything, though I could more readily see it in as well. Aside from that, I think it probably should be uncommon at minimum - I'm not fond of 'can't be countered' anything at common. 7/10Khon listens as Marston speaks, before looking up at the titanic construct that the man summoned. He slides his boltcaster back beneath his cloak as he speaks, "You are from Dominaria then... I see. I did not take part in the invasion - I left Phyrexia before that ever occurred, and have not returned since, though given the tales I've heard, it seems there is not much to return to." He continues approaching as he speaks, seemingly heedless of the titan standing between him and the Dominarian. "To my knowledge, however, Karina Oblay is not an asset of New Phyrexia - and for me, she is not an asset. I am uncertain... but I believe I would consider her a friend. That said," he flips his glaive around, holding it like a javelin, and aether crackles around it as he hurls it at the titanic figure, the very air around the weapon offering no resistance as aether trails in its wake. Khon's gaze remains fixed on the man behind the construct, though he keeps the weapon in his sight to see whether the imbued power will be enough to pull the massive figure into the Eternities. As it impacts, Khon says to Marston, "I have asked you to release Karina Oblay. I will not ask again."Pin to the Aether Instant As an additional cost to cast Pin to the Aether, exile a colorless nonland permanent you control. Exile target nonland permanent.
