New keyword mechanic:
Lurking Sellknife Creature--Human Rogue Backstab 1 (Whenever this deals combat damage to a player or planeswalker, you may have it deal 1 damage to target creature controlled by that player or that planeswalker’s controller.) ------------------------------ “It’s fifty to hire my services, and a further hundred to maintain exclusivity. This is non-negotiable.” 1/2
Wandering Infiltraitor Creature--Rat Rogue Backstab 3 (Whenever this deals combat damage to a player or planeswalker, you may have it deal 3 damage to target creature controlled by that player or that planeswalker’s controller.) , Sacrifice another creature: Until end of turn, Wandering Infiltraitor gets -2/-0 and can’t be blocked. 3/4
Vedalken Spy (yes, this is supposed to be James Bond) Creature--Vedalken Soldier Rogue Backstab 1 (Whenever this deals combat damage to a player or planeswalker, you may have it deal 1 damage to target creature controlled by that player or that planeswalker’s controller.) Vedalken Spy can’t be blocked. ------------------------------------ “Precision of takedowns is key to a successful mission. Any brute can sneak in somewhere and bludgeon a target to death. The real skill lies in elimination with the barest minimum of force.” 2/1
Agent 7 Legendary Creature--Ogre Soldier Rogue Hexproof Backstab 5 (Whenever this deals combat damage to a player or planeswalker, you may have it deal 5 damage to target creature controlled by that player or that planeswalker’s controller.) Whenever a creature blocks Agent 7, exile that creature at end of combat. 1/4
Greater Knifecoat Tribal Artifact--Rogue Equipment Greater Knifecoat enters the battlefield with X knife counters on it. Equipped creature gets +1/+1 for each knife counter on Greater Knifecoat and has trample and backstab Y, where Y is the number of knife counters on Greater Knifecoat. Whenever equipped creature backstabs a creature, put a knife counter on Greater Knifecoat. Equip—Pay for each knife counter on Greater Knifecoat or Sacrifice a creature with power greater than or equal to the number of knife counters on Greater Knifecoat.
As you can see, backstab is primary in black, and a distant secondary in blue, with blue's backstab numbers rarely going above 2, whereas black can have a backstab number as high as 6 or 7. If you're wondering about the Soldier Rogue, that's about as close an analogy to Spy as I could think of, since Spy seems to be an Un- only thing.

Had an idea of doing a set around cryptids and urban legends. Not sure if this works or not.

sdfkjgh kefke Not only that, but as written, you can just exile this card over and over, *at instant speed*, and you'll always have a creature handy. No way that's a healthy board state.

Uh...that's kind of the point, guys? It's elusive. It disappears and comes back over and over. First time for free, then for its mana cost, then for free again. It's not supposed to hide it, just to take it momentarily off the board. I was looking more for things like, "Should turning it down cost something?" or "Is there some unintended consequence of this wording, like it being able to evade infinitely for free?" I thought that the fact that it was supposed to be able to blink repeatedly was obvious.

kefke: In that case, this is an ability that sounds better than it plays. Imagine Flickering Spirit, but the cost to flicker was . Now, imagine ALL your opponent's creatures had that ability. They can never die to combat or targeted removal, and you just lose, frustratedly pulling out your hair.
Unrelated, Spelljack-inspired card design:
Spellcage Engine Enchantment Artifact Flash When Spellcage Engine enters the battlefield, exile target spell. Pay the mana cost of the exiled card: If the exiled card is an instant or sorcery, copy it. You may cast the copy without paying its mana cost. Otherwise, create a token that’s a copy of that card. Unless the exiled card is an instant or has flash, activate this ability only as a sorcery.

Based on Demonic Pact/ Captive Audience: Scripted Madness Enchantment At the beginning of your upkeep, choose one that hasn’t been chosen. If you can’t, sacrifice Scripted Madness — • Each player sacrifices two creatures. • Each player discards three cards. • Each player loses 4 life.

Crystalline Seer - Creature - Human Wizard : The next time you would shuffle your library this turn, instead put the top card of your library into your graveyard. Activate this ability only if Crystalline Seer is face-up on top of your library. 1/3 Mmm, you can just feel the brokenness.

Spittlespark - Creature - Elemental Trample, haste Renown 1 (When this creature deals combat damage to a player, if it isn't renowned, put a +1/+1 counter on it and it becomes renowned.)
At the beginning of the end step, sacrifice Spittlespark unless it is renowned. 3/1 Phantasmal Hero - Creature - Illusion Renown 1 (When this creature deals combat damage to a player, if it isn't renowned, put a +1/+1 counter on it and it becomes renowned.)
Whenever Phantasmal Hero becomes the target of a spell or ability, sacrifice it unless it is renowned. 3/2

Recently saw a greentext story reading on Youtube about a guy who convinced his friends at the game store to let his girlfriend use a custom commander in EDH, only for her to turn around and pull out a bunch of other completely broken customs when they actually sat down and played. I felt inspired to make this card in response.

Had an idea of doing a set around cryptids and urban legends. Not sure if this works or not. Elusive is just morph without any of the surprise. The rules force you to reveal something as it's exiled, so there's no point in hiding it in a stone spider. My suggestion: Trigger - (maybe a spell, maybe a cos; ex. when CARDNAME dies, you may pay 2B. ) Exile CARDNAME and exile the top of your library facedown. Shuffle two cards, then you may look at them. Put one card on the top or bottom of your library, manifest the other.) Thus, there's a 50% chance the morphed creature is the cryptid, but it could also be a land, or another creature entirely. (if the card always going to the top is too good, maybe the 2nd card always goes to the bottom, or is exiled face down.) ~~~~ On a side note, I always thought "mothman" is normally described as being more "birdlike," despite the name. Maybe Bird Insect Cryptid?

Thanks for the feedback, davejoria! The version I'm currently prototyping is actually very different. What I have right now is; Elusive (Any time you could play an instant, you may pay this creature’s casting cost. If you do, it phases out.)

Braveheart Duelist - Creature - Human Knight Vigilance At the beginning of combat on your opponent's turn, choose one: • Braveheart Duelist may block an additional creature this turn. • Braveheart Duelist may block creatures as if they didn't have menace this turn. 2/2 Manadrinker Dryad - Creature - Dryad Whenever Manadrinker Dryad attacks, draw four cards. Then discard each nonland card you drew this way. You may play an additional land card on each of your turns. 2/4

Personally, I really wouldn't worry too much about breaking Retrace - however discarding specific card types doesn't work unless you reveal each card drawn or directly go for a Mulch-like wording..

Here's one inspired by the Timestream Navigator/Helm of the Host combo:
Call to the Champion Sorcery Search your library for a creature card and put it onto the battlefield, then do the same for an artifact or enchantment card. When that artifact or enchantment enters the battlefield, you may attach it to a card, permanent, or player it could legally be attached to.

Manadrinker Dryad - Creature - Dryad Whenever Manadrinker Dryad attacks, draw four cards. Then discard each nonland card you drew this way. You may play an additional land card on each of your turns. 2/4 I would phrase it, "reveal top 4 cards of library; put all lands in your hand, and all others in graveyard." Having the player draw and then discard isn't how you'd generally want to do it (unless you're intentionally doing a set that triggers off of draws and discards, like Madness or Dredge).

I see this as being in Naya when we return to Alara:
Siegebreaker Behemoth Creature--Beast First strike, haste, trample, hexproof Whenever Siegebreaker Behemoth attacks, untap all creatures defending player controls. Those creatures must block Siegebreaker Behemoth this combat if able. Whenever Siegebreaker Behemoth becomes blocked by a creature, double Siegebreaker Behemoth’s power and toughness until end of turn. 1/1

It was very intentionally draw-then-discard. I came up with the idea when I stumbled on Fa'adiyah Seer.

Fair, you still need to reveal all cards drawn to make the ability work though

Does this ability work, and any suggestions for a name? There's no flavor reason for it existing or anything, I'm just trying to go for something like Ajani's Chosen but with buff spells.

temawimag I would rephrase this as "Whenever you cast an instant or sorcery spell that targets only one creature, you may create a 2/2 green Cat creature token. If you do, that spell targets that token only." Call it, I dunno, Wild Magic? Nature's Bounty? Gift of the Veldt? I checked, and none of those names have already been taken by an official card. Anyway, I wanted to workshop this idea for a counterpoint to Ixalan's enchantment --> land cycles: a land that becomes an enchantment.

Anyway, I wanted to workshop this idea for a counterpoint to Ixalan's enchantment --> land cycles: a land that becomes an enchantment. That's not at all what I want to do. I want an enchantment that can let a player dump out a bunch of buff spells without having to have any creatures on the battlefield. Ajani's Chosen is worded with creation and redirect off an ETB because the source is a creature. If you played an aura, you could cast it targeting the Chosen, then use its effect to redirect the token. This card's here to do something a little more niche - it's designed to give a Heroic deck something to do with a bunch of boon spells in hand after a board wipe or exceptionally bad combat (doesn't help that one of the other groups for it has a combat-step-flash-fight ability) late in the game, or give them an option to go wide against a deck with exceptionally punishing spot removal. Having the assumption that a creature would be on the board seems counterproductive to that idea, but thinking it over I'm just going to scrap the idea since there's already a Heroic - make 2 tokens in the set that kinda fills that hole.

Inspired by Dovin's Veto:
Deny Entry Instant This spell can’t be countered. Counter target creature spell. ---------------- “You’re DEFINITELY not on the list!”
It's because stopping a creature spell feels closer to removal, also because it's a slight mirroring of the Shatter/Naturalize/Demystify paradigm.

It's because stopping a creature spell feels closer to removal, also because it's a slight mirroring of the Shatter/Naturalize/Demystify paradigm. That actually sounds more like Abrupt Decay. However, it doesn't really need to be multicolor. "Counter target creature spell" has been mono blue for ages. On the other hand, while Blue has traditionally been the sole proprietor of counter-town, it's easy to imagine an alternate universe where black got creature-countering specifically. The O.G. creature counter I can remember was Remove Soul in Legends, which feels pretty thematically black.
