The city bustled around him, and he frowned. It was all so... so messy. So unclean.
"What is this?!" He shouted at a courtesan and her client, who stared and slowly walked away. "What is a Courtesan?! Why is this allowed?!?!"
Anger flowed through him, but he fought it down, a deep breath bringing him back to civility. It's okay. Stay calm. This was only the tip of the disease, and if he was to fix this, he had to keep calm. This city was an illness, a hotbed of scum and villainy. Open prostitution. Gambling. Drinking. Fights in the streets. "I once again have to be the hero they don't deserve," he growled to himself, his hands curling into fists. "It's not an easy life. But it's one I have to do."
"Umm, sir?" interrupted the stall owner in front of him. "Your gyro is ready."
"Ah yes, good." The hero grabbed the delicious sandwich and bit into it. Justice and heroism was tasty.
"What uh, what are you talking about to yourself there? Under your breath?"
The hero raised an eyebrow and turned back to the stall owner. Just an innocent citizen, trying to make ends meet. "I will tell you, friend," he said, frowning over at him. "This is dirty."
"Hey, I run a clean stall, pal."
"Not the gyro, it's delicious." He waved a hand impatiently and stared around. "Your city. But don't worry. I'll make sure you're safe."
"Uh huh, the real way I'll be safe is if you pay me, buddy."
"You will not be underneath the foot of sin any longer!" He screamed out, ripping his coat open dramatically. "I must summon my forces. Tonight, we stop this."

The first Ante Up took place on the plane of Hayze, but in the city of Lin'Vargas, City of Sin. So yes, we're still in Lin'Vargas.

delicious finally some good fucking unset
also this line in particular is funny to me because it works both as a meta jibe at the old ante up and as the funny mental image of marzen sapphire just not knowing what a courtesan is. I just generally love the thing you're doing with marzen in this

Hey everyone, welcome to Ante Up 2! For those who are unaware, one of my first sets I ever made and posted on this site more than three years ago now was a set where the whole concept was ante-ing. This got a lot of response, not all of it good. "Ante is a terrible idea". "Courtesans in a set is weird and gross". "Wow Liz makes weird sets" Today, I'm here to answer whether or not I'll fix each of these things in Ante Up 2. (Of course I won't) SO LET'S SEE WHAT'S GOIN' ON IN THIS SET! Obviously, it's an un-set. A joke set. Silver border, and I decided to OWN it. Today, I'm going to show some of my favorite cards in the set, with no particular order or meaning. These are cards that don't involve the main abilities and themes of the set, specifically. Those will come later~ {Some cards are fun plays on each other} Ante Up 1 was about a Sin City in the middle of the desert. Booze, sex, gambling, you name it. That continues here. There are a few cards that require you to use an actual deck of cards as well, so prepare for that. {Some cards play on older cards and Magic concepts} Unsets allow me to shine, I think. I'm a comedian, and I LOVE making jokes. And Magic is ripe with joke potential, lots of silly card ideas or puns are all there for the taking. I left SO MANY here out, because they'll spoil things I want to share later. {Some cards that poke fun at me and old sets of mine} If you've never seen me or my sets before, I was a mod here two years ago or so, when I was really active. I made a few sets that were both popular and also had their detractors. I'm commonly called out for "making creature types just to make creature types", or just doing absurd things for no reason. And other than that, I've gotten criticisms on my actual designs. I like to poke fun at myself, but I'll leave you to decide if my critics are correct. (And no, Machinate appears nowhere else in this set.) Thanks for interest, friends, and I hope to get this finished in a bit. The set file is about half done currently, got a lot of cards left to design. If anyone wants to help by donating a joke card or three, hit me up here or on Discord, and I can add your designs to Ante Up 2!

The door to the bar slammed open and a Goblin waddled in, emerald face gaunt with shock and fear. "Max! Max, we've got trouble!"
The sexy and absolutely effervescent face of Max Pleasure, the Multiverse's Sexiest Planeswalker™, spun around to meet the offending Goblin. His giant mass of hair slapped him across the face, which did very little to lessen the dramatics of the situation and totally wasn't very uncomfortable. "You're damn right we do!" I- I mean, Max yelled, "You need to learn how to knock! The bar's closed! No yeah baby, you can continue."
"You don't understand, Max," the Goblin sniveled, shivering in her boots, wiggling in just the most enticing way. Wait crap, I'm getting distracted. Anyway, she continued, "There's some guy named Marzen Sapphire who randomly showed up in town! He kicked out the House and declared himself the new ruler of Lir'Vargas, and... and Max..." she gulped and spoke once more in a voice of pure dread. "You need to see this."
Max left the bar, walking through the streets in little but the multiverse's swankiest duds (his bathrobe). They were his streets, where he'd come to take it easy after long days and nights of heroics out amongst the wild multiverse. Today, however, something was afoot at home. His home.
He joined the crowd forming amongst what had once been The House's mutliversal-famous casino. As Max approached, a horde of Penguins walked past, carrying wood and supplies. They were tearing down the old casino, and rebuilding it in a new image. One of control, of prison. Before his eyes, he saw the little monster slam a sign directly into the ground in front of him. And thus, the sign did decree the most horrifying words he had ever read.
"NO FUN ALLOWED."
"No..." Max whispered....
"No!" he shouted, his voice raising amongst the heavens, as a giant amongst ants that would dare try to stop him. He slammed his mighty foot into the sign, tearing it asunder, and certainly not spraining a leg in the process. "This WILL NOT STAND!" he screamed out, standing tall and not clutching his leg in pain.
"People of Lir'Vargas!" He spun to meet his people, who stared at him in horror and alarm. They needed a guiding hand. They needed a hero. They needed the fun, the joy, the madness that their city brought them. He would free them from that which would dare shackle them! "We cannot let this happen to our city! In the name of fun, I do declare a war!" Max raised a finger to the towering monolith of control before him. "Marzen Sapphire! I will free this town from the shackles of lameness you dare strike us with! Lir'Vargas will be free once more!"

In every war, there are two sides. One, a jibbering pack of fools trying to keep order, and the other, a jibbering pack of fools that think flipping a coin is fun. But there's a third side, isn't there?
There are bystanders. People like to gamble, sure, but there's also just people who live normal lives. They wake up, eat, work, go home, play Scrabble, and go to bed just like the rest of us. But in a war, the two sides don't care about that third side. There's only two, and if the third side isn't with them, it's against them.
So where do those bystanders stand, in this war?
Where do You?

so the back side's -2 might want to give a boost based on the number of coins/dice you've thrown this turn, because as is, the luck does nothing for the fight, which is weird
cool otherwise

Welcome to Ante Up 2! Now that we've shown the combatants, let's focus on what they can do! Marzen's forces are about law, order, and no fun allowed. As such, they are grandstanding ruleslawyers who make declarations of how it should be, and if you break their rules, they get really really huffy. Their new ability is "Declarations". When a Declaration happens, you must Declare out loud what's happening.
Most of them require you to do something silly, or require your opponents to not do something. Though, of course, they still can! Nothing's ACTUALLY stopping an opponent from breaking your rule, except for what the card says will happen! For example:
Fun for multiplayer games, this card is basically "Give someone your creature for the turn". But oh, if they attack you, boom, you draw extra cards! This is White/Blue's major ability, and it splashes into green. Here's a few fun cards to give you

Marzen's all well and good, but what about our Boy, Max Pleasure? Well, Max is all about the wildness. All about that fun. Him and his rebels, fighting for their freedom to be degenerate, are, ironically, happy to continue doing what they were doing. So, although Black/Red has no new abilities to showcase their power, they do have a LOT of coin flips and dice rolls! Even Green gets in on the fun (white and blue have a little bit of coin flipping, but they don't care about it nearly as much. Marzen's folks have outlawed it, after all).
Do you like random? Black/Red's special focus is on this, lots of their cards caring about coin flips and dice rolls, and they specialize in the ability of "Luck", a returning ability from Ante Up where a creature gets larger for each coin flip or dice roll you do in a turn!
As well as Luck, we have some Pretty Funky ways to look at dice rolling and coin flips. Take a look!
And, of course, randomness. Random effects are VERY important in your new coin flip deck. You're here to have FUN, dangit, not have a legitimate strategy! LET THE HEART OF THE CARDS GUIDE YOUR WAY! Or cheat, it's okay, people aren't looking.
Look forward to the final set file, to be released relatively soon! Just one final spoiler, showing off our last ability, and what Green can get up to in this set!

Jokes aside, I've always been really fascinated by sets like these, where there's two real factions situated in two colors and then the fifth color is sort of awkwardly mediating between the two. I don't think this happens a lot in canon with the exception of Mirrodin Besieged (Rw vs Bg with U kind of in the middle), but I've seen it a lot elsewhere and I always wonder how the set designer will pull off that fifth color.
Which is to say I'm curious how green works in this set.

I mean, Jacqui, it's me. So, poorly. HEY LOOK IT'S THAT THIRD COLOR NOW!
Green is a jack-of-all-trades in this set. It represents the civilians, those caught in the middle. People who are either in the middle, or slightly aligned with one of the other two factions. As such, there are cards that have the other two faction's abilities, plus card that care about either the Ruckus being high or the Ruckus being low.
What's the Ruckus, you ask?
The Ruckus Tracker is an additional feelie that comes with the set. It has three states: the game starts at neutral, then you can either go High, or Low, when you Reverse the Ruckus for the first time. Each time then the Ruckus is Reversed, it has to go to the opposite side. It can't go back to neutral.
Green is a more "support" role in this set, which tbh, I felt was weird when designing it and was worried it was a terrible idea. Funny enough though, it's turned out to be one of my favorite colors in the set. So many weird fun cards that don't even have to do with the "support" role.
Anyway, next up is the final update before I release the set. One last thing to showcase and talk about. Yep, the namesake itself! Ante is next!

would be cool and add to the general "hot mess" design intention of the set if high/low ruckus had some sort of game effect (maybe a +1/+0 / +0/+1 buff across the board, respectively)

fluffydeathbringer: True, this is a nice idea. lizstar: I think Germaphobic Growth is way too weak. I think it should be Instant AND have a cmc of 2 instead of 3 (even 1 would still be ok in fact but it's not necessary). I'm not sure i understand the silver part of this card. Is your opponent supposed to not listen to you and try to put their arms very close to your hands so that you unintentionnally touch their arms and then you don't have the opportunity to Reverse the Ruckus ?

Thanks for the catch, Jacqui! I thought I had given the artists for all my cards, but apparently I missed inputting a few and never caught 'em!
Hey, who likes ante?
No one, right? It was an ancient awful card ability that we thankfully got rid of years ago?
While I'm not advocating the return of Ante to black border Magic, I think its interesting additions to gameplay can be used to great effect in silver border!
Ante causes some interesting concepts. If Ante Up 2 went into an actual store, the format would be similar to Conspiracy: a limited set, but instead of one and one, it's a league. Players come back every week to open another pack or two, then they participate in some games! Cards get ante'd, things change, bombs get traded, all good fun for a format where there's no money or care in the world.
But on top of that, Ante can just actually cause some interesting design situations. You have situations where you go "Oh do I want to do this for the added risk?" You can price things a bit better if you add "if you screw up you could lose some GOOD STUFF for it!". For example, there's a cycle of ante cards that are based on older powerful cards. Here's a few now, plus just a few other with that concept.
There's also the idea of making things just a BIT more exciting by fiddling with ante. Sure, it could use exile, I guess... But let's ANTE IT INSTEAD. DON'T MESS UP!
Then, of course, there's red.
Red likes to ante. Red likes to ante a LOT.
Red has an additional theme of "I WANT TO ANTE ALL OF THE THINGS! I DON'T CARE THAT IT'S DANGEROUS!!!!"
The concept is that the packs all have a special sheet, containing the ante cards. Each pack contains one ante card. So sure, a Gulbak Fizzlewallet deck is hard to actually put into action in a limited format.....
But if you're gonna play him, do you really care???
|
|
|
Post by voltaic-qui on Dec 24, 2019 17:51:09 GMT
Gulbak actually seems super easy to trigger in limited if you get lucky! Assuming a 40-card deck on the play, if you have an opening hand with Gulbak and two Casino Cruises:
Opening hand: 33 cards in library, 0 cards in ante T1 Island, Cast Casino Cruise delve-deeper-ing six cards and drawing 3: 24 cards in library, 6 cards in ante T2 Draw step: 23 cards in library, 6 cards in ante Cast a second Casino Cruise the same way: 14 cards in library, 12 cards in ante
At this point, Gulbak passively wins the game come turn five (turn four on the draw).

That's a good point! However, when I said he was hard to play in Limited, I meant good luck finding the right cards for it.
If this is a limited format, like I theorized, we'd have 6 packs to open, one ante card for each pack. There's a good amount of ante cards (57 in fact), with 20 commons. So you're probably going to get at least a few commons, but with a 5% chance for something as powerful as Cruise, you're more likely to get something... else.
Sure you could be lucky and grab Gulbak and, say, something like this or Cruise:
But you're also just as likely (or more-so, techically) to get something like...
That's just limited though, right?

Please tell me that this is part of a cycle. I want a deck that I can potentially just straight-up ante as soon as the game starts.

Shambling Cardsmith raises a really weird question: what happens if you and your opponent both have one? Who gets to go first? I think the solution is just to do a Chancellor of the Annex type trigger.

I'm actually unsure how that wording fixes it! In a situation where two people have Chancellors of the Annex, which goes first? It doesn't technically MATTER in that scenario, but y'know.
Is it a "as soon as you get priority it can happen", so it depends on turn order, deal? I guess that does make sense.

Happy New year, everyone! I've been working on this project in three different years.
And now it's time to throw this out there, have it picked apart, and move onto new pastures. So, here it is:
Check it out, and enjoy the dumbness. If you have any comments or criticisms, drop 'em below. I love that crap.

lizstar *breaks knuckles* okay here we go
okay, so, first of all, I mostly don't go in for unsets, so that's the perspective I'm coming at this from. second, I appreciate it when designers just have fun at getting Weird, in a general sense, and a lot of this looks like you legitimately had fun doing this, which is great. also, puns. gotta love them puns. that being said - declarations look entirely meaningless. un-set mechanics are meant to be outside the framework of black-border and so mostly include stuff like doing things with your body, breaking meta-rules of games, outside-the-game feelies (like the ruckus in this one) or something like that, right? but declarations are just, like, triggered or static abilities that you have to say out loud as being a thing that happens. that's not "so wacky it can only exist in silver-border", it's just stuff that people are gonna be doing anyway, except more of it. if mtg is a shelf, black-border is one level, and silver-border is another one on top of that, declarations are some kid jabbing a compass at the underside of the silver-border layer but barely breaking the wood. - I legitimately do not understand how beleaguered bureaucrat is supposed to work. you declare you do something you can't do, and then it dies immediately because you made a declaration that immediately breaks? - so the way call in backup works is that you either do scryfall research beforehand to determine the four beefiest tokens (which seems to come down to marit lage --> 8/8 vigilance elemental --> 10/10 eldrazi --> 9/9 kraken (--> the "p/t = life total" avatar)) or you get this and then scryfall during the draft on a phone interface. and you always get the fourth-beefiest one. either way it's an un-varied time-sink, and time-sinks aren't fun. blogatog has the same issue but worse - as (iirc) the guy who originally came up with machinate, I'm in excellent designs and I don't like it - "in response to your incoming lethal, I cast heart of the cards, making a 10/10." "cool, I pass, making you lose from the 0 life you have anyway" - no fun allowed: is it roll a 5 or roll/flip five coins/dice - #frystariadidn'tsuck also this is just 2U: counter target spell in this format, which is usually too good for limited - I like that the other person doesn't have to put in effort for the handshake in a pleasure, you can just give the limpest shit out of spite - furdurr's art direction is the only valid art direction in the custom magic community - hit me would be cool if it were any creature (and used the controller's top card) so it could be like a kill spell also - substitute my own really should make you shuffle the deck (also, normal* deck if that's the term you're using for 52) - aggressive gambling is weak - motherfucking goblin game repriiiiiiiiiint *airhorns* - sanguine dealer has no pt - bruce jupiter should be reversed because no one is going to clap and you'll just be singing for no reason - unsure if "elbows off the table" was intended to be in reminder text because it's an implicit event rule. pretty great if so - pushy madame courtesan'd so hard that it became her species - legitimately do not understand how the house is supposed to work - marzen's ult's p weak, could make it only affect your opponents to start with - max pleasure's first two abilities should be switched because making an opponent sac a permanent is weaker than a potential 6 any-target damage - what the fuck, I can't literally destroy the event table with golem meteor? judge - pleasant house doesn't work because lands don't have colors, think you meant types there - legit neat designs pile: angel of debt, debt-relief angel, oozing cardsleuth, ursa major, act of reason, full house, gatherer of forms, oof, phasial research team, necrobloatence, ascended cardshark, form of the ante, goblin nuke, the "you may ante this from your starting hand" cycle, speedy gambler (that FT's great, but less great when you repeated it in unbearable gambler), genesis waif, a fan of basketball, myr tear, card up my sleeve overall this was legitimately the most fun I've had reading through a setfile
