Well, I made some jumps and designed some cards for a Halloween un-set (which is something I normally don't do because I don't do un-cards/play). Because Halloween is the day to celebrate the changing of seasons. Unless I can think of something else, this is my entry: Blanket Ghost Creature - Pig "Spirit" Costume Party - White cloth ( As long as you are wearing a white cloth this creature is wearing its costume.) As long as ~ is wearing its costume, ~ has flying. "White cloth" can be interpreted in way too many ways! -The F.U.N. Police F.U.N. Agent
Creature - Human Agent Costume Party - Badge ( As long as you are wearing a badge this creature is wearing its costume.) As long as ~ is wearing its costume, when ~ enters the battlefield, remove target creature's costume until ~ leaves the battlefield. This badge stands for my pledge to stop all FUN! And this badge my daughter made for me!
3/2 Sqoirnk, Going Whole Hog Legendary Creature - Pig Biker Costume Party - Leather ( As long as you are wearing (fake) leather this creature is wearing its costume.) Protection from Agents. As long as ~ is wearing its costume, Pigs you control have menace. 5/3 Everything And the Kitchen Sink
Enchantment Costume Party - Kitchen Appliance ( As long as you are wearing a kitchen appliance this enchantment is wearing its costume.) As long as ~ is wearing its costume, creatures you control gain: vigilance if it's white, flying if it's blue, lifelink if it's black, haste if it's red, or trample if it's green. My costume? Knight of the Kitchen Sink of course!

{Judging} { melono}This is hilarious! Up until I read it, I didn't expect to ever read "As long as you are wearing a kitchen appliance this enchantment is wearing its costume." This is such a brilliant mechanic that I just might have to steal it for some custom cards for my yearly Halloween Magic Night. Great flavor texts all-around as well, and the Pig type would be perfect to introduce in this way. Amazing! { serraphim}The set symbol matches the flavor very nicely! Love the keyword name, but it feels a little too much of a drawback for the positive that you get. It also feels a little too limited in scope. If you separated the +1/+1 counters from the ability, and made Hibernate only mean "sleep for a turn," but allowed each "awaken" to be a different kind of ability, I think it would be a more interesting mechanic. It would be like an inverted exert. {Winning}This one goes to melono for a really fun design, and still fitting into the challenge theme. Would have loved to see more entries, but oh well.

Steal away, I have no plans on using the mechanic myself besides this. Using those specific cards is also allowed.
Anyhoo, keeping your energy, the next challenge, design a mechanic with the word Tax or a synonym of it.

The mechanic I have brought today is Soultax. Pay the Soultax: At the beginning of the next end step, put a -1/-1 counter on this/that creature or pay 3 life.Soultax is a mechanic mostly intended for creatures, auras and equipment, causing themselves or the creature they are attached to to pay for the use of the additional power granted with soultax. This will weaken your creature, but you can choose to pay the price in their stead, weakening yourself. The mechanic refers to a single instance of itself, but a card may call for it to be done multiple times. You can choose differently for each instance of paying the soultax, even if the source is the same card. One feature I find to be interesting about the mechanic is that it always happens at the end step. Since the creature is the one that pays the price, if they are no longer around that means you don't need to pay it. If you don't try to exploit the loophole though, you are presented with the strategic choice of repeated life spending or weakening the creature in the future. If a card with this mechanic were to grant a permanent bonus to power and toughness, this would effectively be a choice between a lesser permanent increase or a bigger increase with a payment in life as well. 3 life is a payment that has been rising in frequency I believe, in MTG design (though I may be imagining it). 2 life seemed a bit low, but 4 life seemed altogether too much. While 3 may still seem a bit much, historically life has proven an easy resource to spend, so it might work out well this way. I also found a bit of an interesting, if certainly exotic bit of design space for Oblivion's Oath, and I just had to make at least one card with it. Since you might be putting -1/-1 counters on your creatures your creatures might end up dying with 0 toughness, self-inflicted. Most often when this happens its the work of running out of +1/+1 counters or some effect from an opponent, but as this gives you some control over when your creatures get down to 0 toughness, there could be some design space referencing that. Now while you may pay the price for power, perhaps you could have your opponents paying a price instead, using the keyword offensively as well. Lastly, design involving soultax might involve stuff like what was seen with Amonkhet, playing around with -1/-1 counters.

Judgement! Both of these keywords are very versatile and great, but I have to give it to Idea because I like the flavor a lot. I think both are pretty great though, and both should do well as keywords for a single set. Anyhoo, winner is Idea with Soultax

Apologies for the delay and thank you for the win melono ! There are many card games besides Magic the Gathering, raging from stuff like Yugioh, Hearthstone, Shadowverse... to things like Uno or Poker. For this challenge, design a mechanic or keyword based on a feature / mechanic from another card game that Magic the Gathering doesn't have. Be sure to indicate what game you're taking inspiration from!

I got you, fam: +1 Bag of Anti-Spelling Artifact As an additional cost to cast +1 Bag of Anti-Spelling, reach into a Scrabble bag, remove seven tiles at random, and use at least three of them to spell an English word. Players can’t cast spells whose name and/or rules text and/or flavor text contains the spelled word.

I have an older design that fits here. It's different than Hearthstone's Taunt, since combat is very different in Magic than in Hearthstone, but I wanted to find a way that made sense in Magic. Taunt (At least one creature attacks you each combat if able for each creature with taunt you control.)Foriysian Eyesore Creature - Giant Taunt ~ can block an additional creature each combat. 5/5 Incite War Instant Creatures target player controls gain first strike and taunt until end of turn. Deadly Mosquito Creature - Insect Taunt, flying Whenever ~ blocks, destroy all creatures blocked by ~ at end of combat. 0/1 Decoy Banner Artifact - Equipment Equipped creature gets +0/+2 and has taunt. Equip Inconvenient Barricade Artifact Creature - Wall Taunt, defender ~ must block each combat if able. Creatures deal combat damage to ~ in the form of -1/-1 counters. 0/8 Curse of Annoyance Enchantment - Aura Curse Enchant player Creatures enchanted player controls have taunt.

Taking inspiration from Legends of Runeterra's "spell mana" system. Flavored mostly as gems. Probably some wording improvement could be done, but hopefully it's still understandable? also it's been a while since I've paid attention to Magic, so please be patient with me if I seem to not be familiar with common terms anymore
Bank X - Once per turn, you may spend to put a Bank counter on this permanent (max X counters). It has " , remove X Bank counters from me: Add for every bank counter removed. This mana can't be used to cast permanents." Shiny Trinket Artifact Bank 1 Bejeweled Watchdog Creature - Dog Vigilance, Bank 2 You may gain 1 life for each Bank counter you remove from me Its unwavering loyalty has earned it the most majestic of adornments. 2/2 Hordeless Dragonling Creature - Dragon Bank 3
At the beginning of your upkeep, if I have 3 Bank tokens, transform me into Gemseeker Hellkite. Poor little thing. Won't you spare a gem or two? 1/1 Gemseeker Hellkite
Creature - Dragon Flying, Bank 7
I have +1/+1 for each Bank counter on me They grow up so fast... 2/2 Manavault Nexus Artifact Bank 10 When you would add a Bank counter to a permanent, you may add it to me instead.

Currently posting this from mobile, so cleaning it up later. Cleaned. And added like 4 more cards... It should be obvious to those that know it, but it's the prize card mechanic from the Pokémon tcg. Possibly a little silverbordered, but nowadays, it wouldn't get an acorn. Prize card tokenAt the start of the game, after you have decided on your opening hand, you may reveal this token and put the top six cards of your deck facedown into the prize card zone. You cannot look at these cards while they are in this zone. Crane Game Clawer Artifact Creature - Construct Prize card winner ( Whenever a creature dealt combat damage by this creature this turn dies, put a prize card you own into your hand.) Eyes are the prize!2/3 Presenter of Pain
Creature - Vampire When ~ enters the battlefield, if you have five or more prize cards in your prize card zone, you may put one prize card into your hand and lose 1 life. "The question is, how many litres of blood are in contestant number 2!? Closest answer wins!"1/2 Carneval Cheat Creature - Goblin First strike, prize card winner ( Whenever a creature dealt combat damage by this creature this turn dies, put a prize card you own into your hand.) When ~ comes into play, you may reveal any one prize card you own. You may then reveal a card in your hand and swap it with the revealed prize card. The prize card remains face up indefinitely. 3/1 Tarot Reader Creature - Walrus Wizard Whenever you would put a prize card you own into your hand, you may first turn a prize card you own face up. "I see in your future... No, no, that's not the right card. Give me a second."1/4 Prize Hauler Creature - Wolf Beast Trample, prizecard winner. ( Whenever a creature dealt combat damage by this creature this turn dies, put a prize card you own into your hand.) All creatures able to block ~ do so. Howling for his giant haul! And the stabwounds.5/2 Surprise Winners Instant Creatures you control get +1/+0 and gain prize winner until end of turn. ( Multiple instances of prize winner don't stack.)"And you get a prize! And you get a prize!"The Great Distributor
Legendary Creature - Human Flash Defender, prize card winner. Sacrifice ~: Shuffle all cards in your prize card zone into your library. Then put the top six cards of your library into your prize card zone facedown. "Rejoice everyone! New prizes to be won!"2/3 The Grand Prize Legendary Enchantment As long as there are no prize cards in your prize card zone, but you revealed the prize card token at the start of the game, creatures you control get +2/+2 and have lifelink and vigilance. Cycling ( , Discard this card: Draw a card.)

Let's make some Clank!Rules: • You need a bag of 24 black-colored wooden cubes and some colored cubes for each player. Each player has their own color. • If a player makes clank, they place that many of their cubes in the "clank area" (somewhere in the middle of the table). • When "the dragon rages", put all cubes from the clank area into the bag, then draw 3 cubes. Black cubes get set aside. For each colored cube , return it to their owner and that player is dealt 1 damage. Intruder Alert Enchantment Whenever a player attacks with two or more creatures, they make 1 clank. At the end of each turn, if a player has been dealt 4 or more points of combat damage, the dragon rages. Braintwister Mage Creature - Merfolk Wizard Whenever a player casts their second spell each turn, they make 1 clank. Whenever a spell is countered, that spell’s controller makes 2 clank. At the beginning of each upkeep, if no spell was cast last turn, the dragon rages. 1/3 Murmuring Ghast Creature - Spirit Whenever a player discards a card, they make 2 clank. At the beginning of each player’s end step, if that player has no cards in hand, the dragon rages. 3/2 Screaming Dragoncaller Creature - Goblin Berserker Haste Whenever Screaming Dragoncaller attacks, each player gains 1 clank. Whenever Screaming Dragoncaller deals combat damage to a player, the dragon reges. 3/1 Rutting Dragon Creature - Dragon Flying When Rutting Dragon enters the battlefield, target player makes 5 clank and you make -3 clank. Whenever Rutting Dragon attacks, the dragon rages. 5/5 Mr. Whiskers Creature - Cat , : The dragon rages. : The next time the dragon would rage this turn, it doesn’t. , : Remove target attacking Dragon from combat and untap it. 1/1

Apologies once again for the delay. Right at the end of my trip I started feeling sick, and it's only gotten worse since. However, I finally managed to finish, so here are the results: sdfkjgh{Spoiler} +1 Bag of Anti-Spelling: The mechanic here has a major flaw of requiring the other game's tools. I tried to look around online, but I couldn't find a generator or the like for this, so having this card requires you to buy that scrabble bag. Unlike dice which a more general tool and you have online replacements for if need be, by contrast. (also it's a bit of a stretch to call it a mechanic to begin with when it's just one card's effect).
I do like that it has the clause of needing at least 3 of them, blocking out of a lot of words like "of" or "in" which would be too broad... The card is also kind of luck dependent, but seeing as you made it silver border I think it fits in well, and the component of strategy and knowledge of cards for what words you could spell that would give you the best effect. Just a shame you can't really rely on this card too much because of that random element.
All in all it's a very well designed silver border card with a couple fundamental flaws regarding A) the viability of cards that require additional tools and B) the nature of the challenge.
vizionarius {Spoiler}I think (I may be wrong) what you were trying to capture was this way of "directing creatures into attacking certain creatures" but taunt in hearthstone is a defensive mechanic and doesn't force a creature into attacking. While your changes are a flavor win, I think they are a little too intrusive on the role of the mechanic for an adaptation. Goblin Provocateur: There's no good reason for this to cost 2 mana I feel. It's a little stronger than a Raging Goblin, but enough so that I think it would push it over the edge into an extra mana. Foriysian Eyesore: Simple, makes sense, has good synergy. I would probably raise the cost by " style="max-width:100%;"] though. Incite War: I think this card could use some work in the flavor department, either with flavor text, image or a name change, to make it seem more like it's a trap or a scheme rather than just trying to start a war, as I think it fits better with what this card seems to want to do, which is cause your opponent to attack while you have everything with first strike. That minor concern aside, it's a pretty neat card. Deadly Mosquito: It combines well with the mechanic, taking advantage of it forcing an opponent to attack to get a kill. The thing is though, while I understand that the wording and type of effect is likely meant to interact with "can block more than one creature" type effects, I think this is both complicating the card unnecessarily and making it less flavorful. In my opinion, it should just be a 1/1 flying, deathtouch, taunt. Decoy Banner: Nice, simple equipment, not much to comment on, but I do think it's a nice way to get a recurring taunt that's still reasonably removable. Inconvenient Barricade: I like that this card gets shredded each combat, permanently losing health. It goes especially well seeing as you're trying to adapt a hearthstone mechanic, and this is another thing hearthstone has different from MTG, permanent damage. I also like that it has to block. The toughness makes sense being so high considering the effects of the card, though I think it might need playtesting to assess what number would be fair. Curse of Annoyance: Seems like an interesting card for multiplayer formats, and perhaps a little too strong in single player formats, as it is format-warping, basically shutting down any kind of defense-oriented strategy by preventing blockers unless the deck either has reliable enchantment removal or cards picked to be able to handle this, like vigilance or defender. Faustenberger {Spoiler}It definitely sounds like a powerful mechanic, not on face value, but to my understanding this kind of mana storage can be really strong. It helps that it's a generic mana rather than a mana of any color though. I think it's a pretty good adaptation into MTG rules. Sidenote though, as you said there were some wording errors, but the big one is that cards don't refer to themselves as "me" in MTG. Shiny Trinket: To be honest I might have put this at " style="max-width:100%;"] or even mana cost. Not only does it take time to actually activate, you need to pay mana to start storing future uses. Compare this to the commander staple Sol Ring, which is indeed a very very strong card, but if you get half the effect of that card that's already stronger than this card, for half the price, as presumably this card at best gives 1 generic mana every other turn, and needs you spend mana to do that on other turns. Bejeweled Watchdog: Again, probably a little overcosted as lifegain isn't all that strong and this form of gaining mana comes with a number of drawbacks. That aside though, I like the card, it's simple but can still work with synergy and has some interesting choices, namely attacking first and then tapping for mana, risking the loss of your creature before you get the mana, or tapping first and thus being unable to attack. Hordeless Dragonling/Gemseeker Hellkite: There's definitely precedent for this kind of "pay 1 at the end of the turn to put a +1/+1 counter on this creature" effect ( Go Shintai Of Boundless Vigor), though this one has a lot more versatility. Not only can you just spend the mana if need be, but it turns into a flying creature. Also, not legendary. Flying is often much better than trample, being that evasion gets the whole damage through and can improve blocking possibilities as well, so while you do need a 2 turn buffer for this to increase, most of the time a Shock or Lightning Bolt will kill either. So I think this could use costing more. Other than that, the card is very well designed, and very fun from a flavor perspective. I can already see an adorable hatchling growing up to have its very own banked horde. Manavault Nexus: Hard to judge a card like this, but assuming it's not a broken effect to suddenly get 10 generic mana, I think the card would see little use. It's counter-synergistic with the other effects that rely on having bank counters or removing them, neither of which could happen if you add the counter to the nexus instead. It also puts your eggs into one basket that makes it hard to even trigger the mana spending, simultaneously removing your access your stored mana AND making a big red target on one card to get rid of it all at once. So either this card is broken or an active detriment to your strategy. Assuming, again, that it's not the former case, then this card needs some kind of benefit to having those counters, or at the very least some protections. melono {Spoiler}This honestly seems really fun. I am reminder of another card game I never really played but only saw a show of for a brief period, duel monsters I think? (not the yugioh one). There were facedown "shield" cards I think you drew when you got damaged. But I digress.
Power-wise, the mechanic "Prize Card Winner" seems to essentially let you draw a card since there is no way to manipulate (initially) what cards you put into the pile outside of deciding your deck and mulliganing your opening hand. That being said, I think in competitive environments people really jump at anything that could reduce deck size to make it more consistent, and I feel therefore there's some power there beyond a normal card draw. Not that much, but still a slight advantage. Just kind of clarifying what kind of mindset I have in approaching this.
I will say, I like that the mechanic incorporates "killing" a creature. Fits in well with the original mechanic.
Crane Game Clawer: kills a creature, draws a card, don't think this would be printed because often these colorless creatures tend to be on the overcosted side, but I think it looks pretty balanced.
Presenter of Pain: Honestly I don't see this as worth running in a deck. You draw a card if you meet this condition you're less likely to meet as the game goes on, and a pretty bad stat line to go with that? No sir.
Carneval Cheat: By contrast, this is really strong. Pretty aggressively costed for something that can consistently kill things at the same cost without dying, or deal 3 damage per turn. Sure it's vulnerable, but it's to ability/sorcery/instant damage. On top of that, it can swap a card you don't want in your hand for a "random" card in your prize cards, and now you know one of them to draw later when you can more use of it. Great consistency win, in fact you could even consider this direct card advantage if it removes a brick from your hand for later.
Tarot Reader: A great tech card whose existence kind of illustrates the point with the Carneval Cheat a bit, since it also reveals the prize cards. It being its only ability and I still thinking this is a pretty worthwhile card for any deck that makes use of this mechanic, as it allows you to pick the prize cards you really want much more consistently, it showcases as well how strong that last ability in the Cheat was.
Prize Hauler: I like the flavor I'm picturing here of everyone coming to try to get the prizes this creature is hauling away. Meanwhile it is huge and tramples over them, and you might even get some loot out of it. I also like the synergies at play here.
Surprise Winners: Neat, simple card, though undercosted for sure. It's a buff on all creatures you control, even if a very small one, with the potential to draw 6 cards out of it. Outside of that issue though, it's neat. I like the name too. Surprise.
The Great Distributor: Not sure why you made this mythic rare, but ok. I do very much feel this is an important card for a deck that makes heavy use of this mechanic though. 6 cards can go by in a flash sometimes, especially with a surprise winners or prize hauler, so you really want to be able to put more in the prize pool or a lot of your stuff might turn into vanilla creatures.
The Grand Prize: Feels again very undercosted. Even with a difficult condition to meet I don't think 1 mana should ever give this much of a bonus.
Flo00 {Spoiler}Right off the batt, the mechanics here are very complex, took me several times reading it before I realized "clanking" made it so more of your colored cubes would be put into the bag, and that they weren't normally all in the bag. It's a lot to take in and not just in the nuances. That being said, it's definitely an original mechanic, refreshing in a sense, but I do think it could be simplified a bit. In addition, while this would need playtesting to make sure, I think 1 damage may not be significant enough for the conditional approach you're taking here. Intruder Alert: Decent, very white feeling, and very orderly. Easy to trigger the clank, but it's not that much damage anyway. Braintwister Mage: Feels right at home in innistrad, though this flavor is more forgotten realms. Not a big deal though, it's a very interesting card. Murmuring Ghast: This card feels like it should at least have some means to making an opponent discard a card. Other than that, fair game. Screaming Dragoncaller: Flavor-wise, I'm not sure why he gives you clank, or why it's so hard for someone to wake up the dragon who is actively trying to do it. Other than flavor though, it's a decent card for this mechanic, though too fragile to be exciting in my opinion, especially at such a high cost. There are haste 3/3s that cost " style="max-width:100%;"] " style="max-width:100%;"], and I just don't think this mechanic is powerful enough to cost that much on a 3/1 body, let alone more. Rutting Dragon: Definitely would need some rules text explaining what "-3" clank entails. You don't normally see negative numbers in mechanics like this, after all. Other than that, feels like a very good and natural inclusion for this mechanic. Mr.Whiskers: Fair if niche card, I feel like there is a reference I'm missing here though. twintania {Spoiler}A deck-fixing mechanic huh... It's a weird thing to judge. On one hand, changing the contents of your library isn't that big of a deal a lot of the time if it's putting things in a random order. On the other hand, it could help you adapt against highly specific match-ups or put cards in your deck you'd like to search for with some other means.
Another general complaint though, a lot of these cards have 1-word names. This is generally considered bad practice as 1-word name cards are often meant to be reprintable in a lot of sets, so they need more generalized and iconic effects. A niche mechanic like this shouldn't be present in cards with a 1-word name.
Upgrade: A very baseline cantrip effect for this type of mechanic. Maybe the wording should be "up to 1 more" though otherwise this card may require a lot of building around it.
Goons: Relatively simple, though the discard effect feels a little patched-on. Nothing major to complain or praise though.
Market: Bundle of flavor effects. I guess like the previous it fits the cost, and this one does offer some extra variety, but it's not a card that's doing anything other than supporting some other plan.
Workshop: Repeating purchase this easily feels very dangerous, especially in more casual formats where cards "outside the game" may actually just mean anything in your collection or if you have any kind of self-exiling card, as those often self-exile for a reason.
Garden: Simple card, like the design, not even sure if it should come tapped though, lifegain isn't that strong, especially if it's only 1 for an effect that given the sample is not often repeatable.
Chancellor: I like that it helps fix one of the major issues with this mechanic being properly functional, though it does put it dangerously close to the territory of broken, even without taking into account self-milling benefits.
Winner {Spoiler}I will give this win to Flo00 ! Despite my complaints about the complexity, I feel it would really add a refreshing new angle to the game, and the conditional cards are not only original and very interesting in their design, but they also add to that freshness with choices that could change the approach to the gameplay in some strategies. The mechanic was also quite well translated into MTG. In second place came melono as I also feel these cards explored the possibilities with a mechanic that adds a fresh angle to the game and was well-translated from the original. However, as far as balance goes those cards I felt had a lot more to improve on.

Javelineer Ace Creature - Dwarf Soldier Peltast 3 (~ enters the battlefield with a three javelin counters on it.), Remove a javelin counter from ~: It deals 1 damage to any target. Whenever ~ attacks, if it has less than ~ javelin counters on it, put a javelin counter on it. 1/2 Some of Adgaria's finest target hunters prefer projectiles they can pick up.This originally started as a "Boomerang Guy" until I realized the image of a guy running around picking up boomerangs stuck in the dirt was pretty funny. Eventually I swapped it to javelins since 1) those don't come back 2) it makes for a nice Icatian Javelineers callback 3) I think spears can fit in a lot more settings than boomerangs can. Cards with Peltast would usually be in the buisness of removing javelin counters from themselves to trigger effects, but at higher rarities could remove javelin counters (or even just counters) from their allies to do all sorts of effects. Mindspear Cultist Creature - Zombie Cleric Peltast 1 (~ enters the battlefield with a javelin counter on it.)Whenever ~ deals damage to a player, you may remove a javelin counter from it. If you do, that player discards a card. 2/1 Alpha Strike Instant Remove a counter from each creature you control. ~ deals damage to target creature equal to the number of counters removed this way plus one. "In the name of Adgaria, Makareth shall fall at these gates!"Sorcery speed Skred-like card that shows how it can work beyond the expected limits. Bronze-Tip Armorer Creature - Dwarf Artificer Other creatures you control have peltast 1 and " , Remove a javelin counter from ~: It deals 1 damage to target planeswalker or tapped creature.". (Multiple instances of peltast stack.)Creatures you control with a counter on them have vigilance. 2/4 "A good spear for many makes for many a safe home."
