I got something like tribal metalcraft. Tribalcraft? Gilt-Leaf Visionary Creature - Elf Shaman Congregate — When Gilt-Leaf Visionary enters the battlefield, if you control three or more Elves and/or Shamans, draw a card. 1/1 Boggart Plunderer Congregate - Goblin Warrior Congregate — When Boggart Plunderer attacks, if you control three or more Goblins and/or Warriors, Boggart Plunderer gets +1/+0 and gains first strike until end of turn. 2/1 Kinsbaile Guard Creature - Kithkin Soldier Congregate — Whenever Kinsbaile Guard blocks, if you control three or more Kithkin and/or Soldiers, put a +1/+1 counter on each blocking creature. 2/2 Cabal Crossbreed Creature - Zombie Cleric Congregate — When Cabal Crossbreed dies, if you control three or more Zombies and/or Clerics, create two 2/2 black Zombie creature tokens. 4/4 Aphetto Calling Tribal Sorcery - Wizard Return up to two target creatures to their owner’s hands. Congregate — If you cotnrol three or more Wizards, draw two cards. Automated Factory Cart Tribal Artifact - Vehicle Assembly-Worker Trample, vigilance Congregate — As long as you control three or more Assembly-Workers, Automated Factory Cart is a creature. Crew 3 (Tap any number of creatures you control with total power 3 or greater: This Vehicle Assembly-Worker becomes an artifact creature until end of turn.)So yea, I started out on Lorvyn, then I slipped into Otaria and in the end I guess I went completely haywire. Note that most of them count themselves.

This contest is now closed for judging. Please wait.Judging! { sdfkjgh }Nice, simple mechanic, pretty clean. Like cohort, but much more flexible. I like that the cards have multiple creature types to make the mechanic easier to enable. They kind of have pseudo-haste, since the ability doesn't use the symbol. Not sure how a feel about that. Individual card notes: Your chaplain should be a cleric, not a priest, but that's just nitpicking creature types. I like the idea behind the archmagus, but I'm not sure how I feel about adding the additional costs. I feel like it could cause confusion in that the other cards all work the same way, but this one has a weird activation thing. I'm also not sure what the point of giving this changeling is? It has to tap on its own, separate from the congregate stuff, so creature types don't matter here. It's basically "tap a bunch of your stuff, filter mana into a single color: draw a card" and that feels awkward. Overall: I like it, but I'm not sure how I feel about the pseudo-haste, and the mythic feels weird and clunky. 6/10{ Flo00 }I like this. Clean, simple mechanic that can be used in a variety of ways design-wise. Counting themselves I don't think is a problem, as metalcraft appeared on artifacts that counted themselves. I also like your use of the Tribal card type to enable noncreature cards with the mechanic. Individual card notes: Your vehicle is missing power and toughness. Other than that, I don't really have much to say. Overall: Solid entry, clean, simple designs. The vehicle is a neat idea, but hard to judge without P/T. I might have liked to see another flashy design in addition to the simple stuff, but that's not a big issue. 8/10{ ameisenmeister }Aha! A non-tribal entry! This plays in interesting space that I don't think we've really seen in magic previously. The mechanic likes token generators, as they can get you to that second creature without spending too much mana. Minor wording quibble: you probably want to say "each turn" instead of "the same turn." See the wording on Jori En, Ruin Diver, for example. Individual card notes: You showed the range of effects the mechanic can work with quite nicely. The enchantment is cool, giving you a good way to help proc the congregate triggers, and I like the reference to Lightning Helix. I wonder if it should be legendary though; once you have more than one, the card basically reads, "At the beginning of your upkeep, make a token and drain your opponent." Probably not overly problematic, but it probably snowballs really fast. Overall: Clean, simple mechanic that looks nice in the colors you showcased. Other than the question of legendary status on the enchantment, this is a really solid entry. 8/10{ somerandomperson }Interesting direction for the mechanic, seems inspired by Amass. I worry that having a lot of the same token but with different amounts of +1/+1 counters could become a nightmare to track. I can't tell if it's intentional that the mechanic counts the token you just made when you get the counters, as some of the cards seem to be balanced without it counting, and others with. Individual card notes: Trample doesn't really seem like an ability a healer would give out. Abilities on it look well costed, just the flavor is weird. Overall: While I like the concept, I'm not too keen on the tracking nightmare a deck built around this mechanic would be. I feel like getting the counters for nontoken creatures could immensely help that, but I'm judging what I see, not what could be. 5/10Another note, unrelated to the designs: I feel as though if you're going to do renders, the art should match the card. While I appreciate the effort, the abstract art attached to these is a bit off-putting/distracting, and I would have preferred to just read the cards in text form. There's a great thread here for finding card art. {@ymonrah}Good threshold mechanic, using color this time. Clean and simple, not much to say about it.
Individual card notes: Yokuzai's Battalion is missing artist credit, so I guess you're lucky a mod didn't catch that before I got to judging. Wizards Gathering has a few too many hoops, in my opinion, for such relatively small payoff, especially for a rare. Maybe if it had a scry 1 on upkeep and mill 2? I dunno, just feels kinda wimpy for a rare.
Overall: The mechanic is solid. I might have liked to see at least one more card. It has good design potential, I'd have liked to see it in action a bit more. For example, putting it on a multicolor card might have been interesting. The disappointing rare doesn't help. Still, the mechanic would do work in a mono-color themed set. 7/10 Interesting entries all around, but there can be only one. The win goes to Flo00 with ameisenmeister as a close second.

gamma3: The reason for the activation cost is because, at minimum, you'd be producing MMMNNNOOO (where each unique letter is a potentially different color) mana and drawing up to three cards, and it only scales up from there. That seems worth limiting via an initial payment, wouldn't you agree?

I didn't say there wasn't a reason its written the way it is, I said it feels clunky. I can understand the reasoning behind 12-tone composition, doesn't mean I like listening to it.

Thanks for the win gamma3! The vehicle was supposed to be 4/4.
Next: balance (or anything derived from it)

(This was a reference to the best card of all time.) I found 'Balance' quite hard to design for. It kind of wants you to do stuff with your opponent, like "You are balanced if you control the same number of permanents as your opponent" but that seems like if you built your deck around it, your opponent could very easily counter it by not playing stuff or sacrificing stuff.

I'll be busy during the weekend, so I'll judge this on monday. EDIT: Judged! {somerandomperson}I like your balance. It does something new that real magic rarely (or never?) does: To want a spesific power instead of a range (e.g. 4 or greater). It also does a great job as a pseudo: Once I know what it does, I read Balance and then skip over the next one and a halve sentnaces. Yet I can also see why Wizards doesn't do this. The ideal play to use this is to play a deck full of creatures that all have the same power. What kind of environment wants you to that? I imagine this is good for a product that's mainly drafted, like battlebond. There it gives you a nice hint on something to draft towards, yet if you only get a few right pieces it can still make sense. And I don't see how the Colossal Beast is a reference to Black Lotus {Ymonrah}This is a strange, yet fun ability. I guess your balance is ainmed more at constructed. In limited I imagine it to be a bit too random to be really enjoyable. To me it feels a bit like a city's blessing that's constantly shifting. I guess it works good against some archetypes like tokens or fast ramp. In constructed you can really try to trim down on permanents that stick around.
somerandomperson wins.

This one's a little complex, but I hope easily grokkable.
Kor Armsbearer Creature--Kor Soldier , : Arm Kor Armsbearer. (Flip a coin. If you win the flip, search your graveyard and/or library for an Aura or equipment card with converted mana cost of X that can be attached to the chosen creature and attach it to that creature. Weapon-Cloaked Assassin Creature--Human Assassin Rogue Deathtouch Whenever Weapon-Cloaked Assassin attacks, it arms itself with its power. (Flip a coin. If you win the flip, search your graveyard and/or library for an Aura or equipment card with converted mana cost equal to Weapon-Cloaked Assassin’s power that can be attached to the chosen creature and attach it to that creature. If you searched your library this way, shuffle it. Otherwise, put X +1/+1 counters on the chosen creature.) 1/3
Supply Tent Enchantment At the beginning of each player’s end step, you may pay . If you do, arm target creature. (Flip a coin. If you win the flip, search your graveyard and/or library for an Aura or equipment card with converted mana cost of X that can be attached to the chosen creature and attach it to that creature. If you searched your library this way, shuffle it. Otherwise, put X +1/+1 counters on that creature.)
Kor Quartermaster Creature--Kor Soldier Artificer Vigilance, trample When Kor Quartermaster enters the battlefield, it arms itself with its converted mana cost. (Flip a coin. If you searched your library this way, shuffle it. Otherwise, put X +1/+1 counters on the chosen creature.) As long as Kor Quartermaster is enchanted or equipped, it has “: Arm target creature, then arm target creature.” (Flip a coin. If you win the flip, search your graveyard and/or library for an Aura or equipment card with converted mana cost of X that can be attached to the chosen creature and attach it to that creature. Hi everyone! Sorry for the delay, completely forgot about this. ameisenmeister wins. I think it creates really cool unique design space that hasn't really been explored yet. Whilst I like the others, they would either create repetitive gameplay, or would rarely come up and matter, meaning that I couldn't really see more than a few of them a set.

Dream (Look at the top card of your library. You may reveal it and put it on the bottom of your library. When you do, this creature dreams that card. If you don’t, put a +1/+1 counter on this creature.)

Well, I had something else in mind, but then I saw that Rasputin Dreamweaver was a thing, and I wondered what that would look like as a keyworded mechanic where having more of the creatures with it makes it easier to use. I came up with this really dumb idea. (Consider Rasputin himself the rare for the set.)

viriss: I'd just like to point out that Wizards has already learned this lesson with Ophidian: it's better when you don't have to choose between advancing the game towards its conclusion or getting the effect. I'd recommend you follow suit, and have it trigger off of either dealing combat damage to a player or planeswalker, or (even better) have it trigger off of attacking.

Dream - Reveal the first card you draw each turn. When its converted mana cost is greater than [this card’s CMC], <effect>. Valley Guard Creature - Elf Guardian Dream — Reveal the first card you draw each turn. When its converted mana cost is greater than 3, put a +1/+1 counter on Valley Guard. 2/2 Dream Gate Enchantment Dream — Reveal the first card you draw each turn. It its converted mana cost is greater than 4, draw another card. Herald of the Morning Breeze Creature - Angel Flying Dream — Reveal the first card you draw each turn. When its converted mana cost is greater than 5, Herald of the Morning Breeze deals 3 damage to any target and you gain 3 life. 3/3 Torment of Nightmares Enchantment Dream — Reveal the first card you draw each turn. When its converted mana cost is greater than 3, target opponent loses 3 life unless they sacrifice a nonland permanent or discard a card. Mirror Dreamer Artifact Creature - Golem Dream — Reveal the first card you draw each turn. When its converted mana cost is greater than 4, create a token that’s a copy of Mirror Dreamer. 3/3 Valley of Broken Dreams Land Dream — Reveal the first card you draw each turn. When its converted mana cost is greater than 0, add one mana of any color. Until the next main phaseyou don’t lose this mana as steps and phases end. sdfkjgh thanks for the catch. I'm a big fan of the Guardian type and I'd like more to see it return than have things like Hags, Peasants or Warlocks.
