Judging this on Sunday

This was not a popular contest, looks like. viriss - That is a lot of colors on a pair of cards. Good idea putting the "Partner with" reminder text on the card without the meld trigger on it. Flo00 - Fun meld, suffers a little from being unable to make it day or night on their front sides and needing day/night to meld. Monoblue meld with those abilities seems weird, but you judge that based on the front faces anyway. Phasing is a nice touch. This was really close. Going to say the winner is Flo00.

This was not a popular contest, looks like. I guess the combination of limits was just a bit much. Meld already means that you had to design three cards in total instead of one. Having to add daybound and nightbound made it even harder, at least that's what kept me from posting an entry this time. Not your fault of course, just ill luck with rolling the limits.

Thanks for the win quazerflame!
LIMIT #54: If you can't go over, go around... your card has or grants evasion! (Thanks, Gyoza!) LIMIT #12: You and me baby, we ain't nothin' but mammals... Your card is a creature. LIMIT #172: To infinity and beyond! Your card references a work of fiction that is not part of Magic. (Thanks Flo00!)
This should be easy enough.

Judging somewhere in between 24 and 48 hours. {kefke}Simple design. Nothing wrong with it. Good . I was surprised to find out that this exact constellation hasn't been done before. The closest real card I could find is Eutropia[7url].
{ameisenmeister}That's a nice twist on emerge. Sadly evolve is already taken as a keyword. I like cards that reference card names. Asking only for part of a name is (currently) silver-border territory, but I see how this opens up exciting possibilities and designs. Fits neatly between Bone Shredder and Dark Hatchling. {viriss}Basically this is a 2 mana 2/2 fling menace. That#s pretty strong for a colorless card. I'm not a big fan of ability words, but these are spot on and really good on a silver-border card. Made me think a lot about what "salsa gestures" I can come up with.

Thanks for the win! I know that mentioning a part of a card's name is silver-border territory, but as was dice rolling until lately.
Anyway, your new limits are: LIMIT #171: Sunrise, sunset. Your card either has the abilities daybound and nightbound, or it otherwise uses and cares about day and night. (Thanks, quazerflame!)
LIMIT #88: I can't see! Your card cares about a hidden zone in some way. (Thanks gamma3!)
LIMIT #173: Cardboard picture horror show - Your card is set on the plane of Innistrad. (Thanks, Ameisenmeister!)
Huh, these limits really go well together, don't they? Have fun!

I was surprised to find out that this effect isn't in Midnight Hunt. Twilight Haunt Creature - Spirit Flying If it’s neither day nor night, it becomes day as Twilight Haunt enters the battlefield. Whenever day becomes night or night becomes day, target player mills two cards. 2/2 I hpoe milling counts as caring about the library?

Merry Drunkard Creature - Human Werewolf Whenever Merry Drunkard attacks, you may exile a card from the top of your library face-down. Daybound 3/2 // Howlpack Hedonist Creature - Werewolf Whenever Howlpack Hedonist attacks, reveal a random card exiled with it. You may cast that card. Nightbound 5/4 Clarification: If the card is not cast, it stays face-down in exile.

Was trying to think of a way to represent a character that mainly goes by their bloodline/house name, and hit on this: Ein, Duplicitous Envoy Planeswalker - Ein-XV Whenever a creature enters the battlefield or transforms, you may discard a card, then draw a card. : Choose one: - It becomes day. - It becomes night. - Untap target creature you control. You may transform it. : Reveal a card from your hand. If it shares a name with a creature you control, choose one: - Creatures you control with that name get +3/+3 until end of turn. - You may transform creatures with that name. The idea is that this Planeswalker is essentially such a good liar they can turn 'day into night' metaphorically if they wanted to, and it helps that they've maneuvered themselves into some kind of communications position among various factions. The colors were a bit weird to do for this one because transform matters is Gruul but I wanted to represent transforming in a more duplicitous way... I would make this a hybrid if I could, but hybrid mana doesn't appear in Innistrad. The general strategy for Ein is to reward massing copies of the same Werewolves to capture a 'pack hunting' flavor despite Ein not being a Werewolf or Vampire (just a very good liar). The choose one serves double duty as representing dedicated espionage (as opposed to Davriel, Soul Broker's more arbitrary contracts) and allowing Ein to represent this flavor if run in a non-transform deck. (Compare Echoing Courage, which is cheaper and less restrictive at instant speed but also generally less powerful.) I know it seems a bit pushed to cost this at 3 given the +1, but most of the things that Ein could reasonably 'cheat' are outside of SOI and the one that isn't is really subpar mana-fixing otherwise. They're also deliberately unable to escape Frost Bite range (good liar, not fighter). Aside from the initial flavor idea, I made this I feel it's pretty reasonable for Werewolves to have a Tazri, Beacon of Unity-esque card that unites the old and new styles of design for a well known concept on a plane.

Inconvinent Soothsayer // Unheeded Warning Inconvientent Soothsayer Two generic a white and a blue Creature - Human Witch
Daybound
Foretell 2U (During your turn, you may pay 2 and exile this card from your hand face down. Cast it on a later turn for its foretell cost.)
When Inconvinent Soothsayer enters the battlefield, or night becomes day, each opponent creates a ward clue artifact token with “You have hexproof,” “Creatures you control cannot attack,” “2, sacrifice this artifact: Draw a card.”
When Inconvinent Soothsayer dies, it becomes night, then return it to the battlefield transformed.
2/2 | Unheeded Warning Enchantment -Aura Curse
Nightbound Foretell a generic and a black (cast Unheeded Warning for this foretell cost only if it is night) Enchant player When day becomes night, attach Unheeded Warning to target player.
Enchanted player cannot cast more than one spell on their turn.
Only one creature enchanted player controls can attack or block each turn. |
Upside-down in exile is a hidden zone, and it's thematically innistrad, even if mechanically blends kaldhiem and innistrad a little.

Judging time!
Simple and elegant. And yes, why doesn't this card exist already? virissCute pair of a card with top notch flavor. The cat isn't likely to do anything meaningful before it becomes night but I guess that's only fitting for a Lazy Cat. gamma3Nice interaction despite some rules issues ( Howlpack Hedonist[/b] referring to itself by name excludes all cards exiled by its other half because it's not named Howlpack Hedonist, for instance.). The reminder that the card stays in exile looks like an upside on first glance but you'll realize that it isn't when you happen to randomly reveal the same exiled land card over and over again and are unable to get rid of it. The idea, however, is very cool. Nonagon InfinityWell, the day-side looks really weak to me, considering that you pay 4 mana for a (legendary) 2/2 that only loots one card. And even that only when it deals combat damage to an opponent. The backside on the other hand has the potential to get seriously out of hand. With just something like a Stealth Mission. I don't think that it is completely busted or anything, just that the power disparity is rather stark. ZephyrPhantomReading your explanation, the card makes a lot more sense than I initially thought. The free rummage trigger whenever a creature enters the bf under your control might already be worth something so I don't doubt this card's power. The first ability gives me a headache, though. Uniting the old and the new werewolves is a nice idea but with it, you can have nightbound creatures on the battlefield during daytime and vice versa. Certainly not the most confusing thing ever in a game of magic but a bit unintuitive nonetheless. The second ability gets the flavor of pack hunting across but I'm unsure about its usefulness. The best thing you could do with the first option is to give three creatures +3/+3 until end of turn. Not bad, but you'd need a perfect board with three of the creatures attack-ready on the field with the fourth copy in your hand. Everything less than that, giving two creatures with the same name +3/+3 for instance, isn't particularly strong in my eyes. And the transform option will likely never be used in the first place, considering that you can transform (and untap) your creatures with the first abilty which then even adds a loyalty counter instead of removing one. You also paid a lot of attention to the card fitting into a certain standard environment but you don't have to. The limit just says that the card has to have Innistrad flavor, so hybrid mana costs are fair game. hydraheadhunterFirst things first, that is a lot of text! I just tried and copied the rules texts of both cards onto a card template in MSE and even without the reminder texts for foretell and daybound/nightbound, the text boxes are packed. But there are a number of other issues with this, admittedly very flavorful pair of cards. - Inconvenient Soothsayer basically has me pay at least four mana only to give my opponents card advantage. Yes, the creatures you control can't attack might hurt some decks but there are dozens of midrange or control decks that would love a clue token like this. - Giving all opponents hexproof makes it that, should the Soothsayer die before an opponent has sacrificed their clue token, you have to curse yourself with the Unheeded Warning. I can only guess that this is intended and the When day becomes night, attach Unheeded Warning to target player. line is kind of a failsafe for that, but it makes the card so incredibly weak and potentially crippling for yourself that I don't get why anyone should play it. - I'm not a rules expert, but I have my doubts that cast Unheeded Warning for this foretell cost only if it is night even works this way.[/div]
{And the winner is...} Flo00! with viriss as a close second.
Thansk everyone for participating!

Does flavor text count for the second challenge? No, flavor text is extra. Oh goody, time to pull a OG theros and write a gods' damned novel in the flavor text of a vanilla creature... Scholar of Numenaen Era A blue, a black, and a red Creature - Human wizard FT: The dragons who had conquered Dominaria so completely did not rule kindly: eventually, five wizards rose up, stole the dragons' power, and harnessed it to detrone the tyrants. Edit: gods damned it, it's always something. Thanks Flo00 for point out the whoopsie.
