Welcome to the Card of the Week Contest! To participate in this Contest you'll have to design a card along the contest guidelines and throw it into the arena with other competitors' entries! At the end of each week, a winner will be determined by forum poll. The winner's card will be rendered and featured on the Welcome page, and the winner decides the challenge for the next week's Contest! Here we go, competitors: our four-hundred and eleventh challenge! The winner of the "Heroes of the Past" poll was Fermat with...And the challenge issued by our runner-up was... Design an Incarnation or card that references one! Here's a list of all currently existing incarnations. They generally have one word names that describe a feeling or concept. To increase your chances of winning and to also make creating the poll easier on whomever is doing so, please try to use a render. Additionally, please try to keep your entry edits all in one post - if you need to change it you can put your old entry in a spoiler marked "Old entry" and leave the newest rendition to be seen. Just use the edit button in the top/right of your original post. And now, time to begin the challenge! Best of luck, competitors!

I doubt I can surpass my old Uniqueness design with a serious entry, so I think I'll go for silver border this time I already tackled a rarity in the past - so how about a color this time?

I’ve always liked this word. Gumption Creature - Incarnation Haste Whenever you attack with one or more other creatures, if you have no cards in hand, exile the top card of your library. You may play it without paying its mana cost if its mana value is less than or equal to the number of attacking creatures. 3/2

Created a new version because the old one didn't work how I meant it to.

My immediate thought was Hiraeth, a welsh word with no direct english translation but it's closest succinct translates might be 'nostalgic homesickness' or 'old mourning'. There's ot more nuance and depth to it than either pair of words capture; anyway, it's my favorite emotion (not to feel but to recognize exists), and was my obvious first pick. But because of the emotion's complexity, I thought it wouldn't fit into a single color, so here is a two color incarnation.
| Hiraeth Two generic, a white, a black, and a black or a white
Creature — Nightmare Incarnation
Whenever a creature or planeswalker enters the battlefield, if a nontoken permanent with the same name left the battlefield earlier this turn, each opponent loses 2 life and you gain that much life. FT: It says you can't go home.
3/5
Art: A skull and spine wrapped in rags propping up a chello as if to play it. Art by: Alexandre Chaudret (with minor modification for purpose by hydraheadhunter).

I think this would be a cute 10 cycle, so I'll probably be looking at doing the other nine and re-submitting with the best of the ten. but might as well get the entry so I don't, in classic hydraheadhunter fashion, forget to submit. Hiraeth was the best of what I came up with, although I'm adding a snippet of flavor text since it just barely fits in the box and really brings the card together imo.

Taking inspiration from the New Capenna, here's Protection: Protection Creature - Incarnation Protection from creatures : Put a shield counter on target creature you control. Activate this ability only if Protection is in your graveyard and only once each turn. (If it would be dealt damage or destroyed, remove a shield counter from it instead.)[4/4]

Envy 3BBB Creature - Incarnation M Lifelink to players (Damage dealt to players by this creature also causes you to gain that much life.) When ~ enters the battlefield, each opponent sacrifices creatures until they control no more creatures than you, then discards cards until they have no more cards in hand than you. If ~ would be put into a graveyard from anywhere, shuffle it into its owner's library instead. 4/4

{Text}Furor Creature - Incarnation Battle cry (Whenever this creature attacks, each other attacking creature gets +1/+0 until end of turn.) As long as Furor is in your graveyard and you control a Mountain and a Plains, creatures you control have battle cry. 2/2

Uh, vizionarius, what's "lifelink to players"? Does that mean it only gains you life if it hits a creature?

I think this card would benefit from dash's reminder text, because the interaction between dash and flash is unexplored territory and most people aren't going to grock that dash gives the card haste so it can activate its ability; and they'll think the cards just confusing, eg "why would you cast this at instant speed, it doesn't have haste and it's not a good blocker."

Uh, vizionarius , what's "lifelink to players"? Does that mean it only gains you life if it hits a creature? It's the opposite. Only gains life if it deals damage to players. Will work on a render later this week and add reminder text for that. I'm traveling now and haven't had the chance to do so yet.

"Whenever this creature deals combat damage to a player, you gain that much life." This would also allow you to give it normal lifelink, if that's something you want for the card.

If we're looking at the deep nuance of this, lifelink isn't a triggered ability but a staticability that opperates most similar to a replacement effect.
120.3f Damage dealt by a source with lifelink causes that source’s controller to gain that much life, in addition to the damage’s other results.
Spelling it out then would then be closer to, "As ~ deals damage to players, you gain tht much life."

As always -- My oppinion and mine alone If you don't like it, downvote the crap put of it. Daij_Djan Donno if this frame has a silver-border-option -- But i guess the rarity gives it away regardless. "counter target spell with great pleasure." or just put a "," after pleasure. you could also add: "This increases the hatered towards ~'s owner by a great amount." Haters gonna Hate ;-) gluestick248 "Recklessness" would fit this concept more imo. inverness donno how the interaction of evoke and "Players can't lose life." would even work -- or if it even works at all. hydraheadhunter i don't really get what that has to do with "homesickness tinged with grief and sadness". Vunik Should be fine as it is i guess BinaryBolas "When ~ is put into a graveyard from anywhere, shuffle it into its owner’s library." --> Guileviriss Should be fine as it is i guess vizionarius "When ~ is put into a graveyard from anywhere, shuffle it into its owner’s library." --> GuileI'm not realy a fan of adding new keywords if the challenge doens't call for it explicitly. pernicious"Flying, hexproof from creatures, and planeswalkers" --> nevinyrral-urborg-tyrantpls upload a propper image that ppl can look at even if they aren't logged in. sade612 Should be fine as it is i guess damagicgeek You still has to think if you wanna cast the spell or not. i don't think "Impulsivity" fits this concept. spazlaz it punished hubris, but it doesn't represents hubris imo -- and that's what incarnations are -- manifestations of concepts. Jartis "Whenever a creature you control dies while ~ is in your graveyard, you may cast ~/it from your graveyard as thought it has flash." --> boneyard-scourge

inverness donno how the interaction of evoke and "Players can't lose life." would even work -- or if it even works at all. Your comment made me realize that my card doesn't quite work how I want it to. The intent was that the "can't lose life" ability would interact with the life exchange ability such that whoever had the lower life total would gain life to match the other. So if you cast it for its evoke cost, my thinking was that it wouldn't be on the battlefield, so you'd get a regular life exchange as we've seen on other cards. But I forgot that you can stack the evoke trigger so that this guy would still be on the field to see its ETB resolve.
Back to the drawing board. Thank you so much!

The HarlequinThe name is mostly meant to reference red's 'one turn to play from exile' card advantage being called "impulse draw" amongst the player base.

Haters gonna Hate ;-) Big thanks for the feedback Yeah, the template is borderless by definition - but it really works best for the artwork (and after stumbling across that, I really want to use it ). Will definitely fix the grammar - will ponder about the additional line The Harlequin The name is mostly meant to reference red's 'one turn to play from exile' card advantage being called "impulse draw" amongst the player base. Not only amongst the player base, it's the official term by WotC

Wanted to try my hand at a tribal effect. A good chunk of incarnations usually can cast themselves for free like Solitude or want to be in your graveyard like Anger. Psychosis Creature - Incarnation Whenever Psychosis or another Incarnation enters the battlefield, reveal the top five cards of your library and separate them into two piles. An opponent chooses one of those piles. Put a card from the chosen pile into your hand, then put all other cards revealed this way into your graveyard. 1/3

hydraheadhunter i don't really get what that has to do with "homesickness tinged with grief and sadness". "Whenever a creature or planeswalker enters the battlefield" This part of the effect symbolizes coming home, with "if nontoken permanent with the same name left earlier this turn" symbolizing the leaving home. The intervening absence of the permanent triggering the effect is meant to 'invoke' the feeling of homesickness that is the crux of hiraeth as an emotion. Ruleswise, it has to be worded this way because when objects change zones they become new objects, so no creature¹ ever enters the battlefield with the memory of having left the battlefield. So that's why the trigger is like that.
As for the actual effect the trigger causes, i decided to stream line it to "gain that much life," so it's simpler. But the effect is evokes that aching sadness, like somethings missing.
¹There may be some weird examples, and if there are, theyr probably red pheonixs, blue sphinxs, or some weird fucking card that completely breaks all design conventions, but regardless they're not very useful to the black-white Hiraeth.

Fermat - I like how Hate makes casting additional companies of itself incrementally expensive.
