Magic Set Editor A vulpine woman in lavish clothing and well groomed fur. She can clearly float freely, and every step on solid earth she takes is in sarcastically large bounds. Her presence itself feels oddly alien despite her calm and joyous demeanor, as if the space around her has to bend slightly to her accommodation. She seems to find herself in any business but her own without a clear intention besides her personal meddling. She is well traveled throughout the multiverse and is sought out as a semi-reliable source of interplanar secrets, or just as someone who makes lovely conversation over tea; this is of course if she hasn't wronged you in some way, which she has likely has, even if only tangentially. She would never describe her plane of origin but she claims to an incredible age. This woman is Yakana, Lady of the Branching Paths.(Art by FreezingHeron) (She/Her) Colors: " style="max-width:100%;"] MV: 4 Color Identity Level: 2 Types: Instant, Sorcery Perks: Rarity Upgrader (Yakana can design rares and mythics.) A quiet evening on the Arena is interrupted by the sudden planeswalking in of a giant rat, who scampers by on all fours for a short distance. He stands up on two legs, looks around and sniffs at the air. He catches sight of Yakana and straightens out his purple coat. A paw reaches back into the satchel on his back and pulls out a long pearl necklace.
"Ah, perfect timin', as always, I'mma sure!" The rat announces as he walks closer. "Mizz pink fox lady ma'am, haz I gots the zweil of a lifetime fer yas! As I'm sure ya can see, this here's the gen-u-wine article! The finest Recididicidician pearls monies can buy!" The salesrat clearly stumbles through the name but keeps on talking a mile a minute. "Ya know they say a pretty lady can make the pearls smell like just about annythin' her heart desireses, and you my friend, you look like the kind pretty lady who knows what her heart desireses an' has the ten whatever-kinda-monies-you-use to get this special, liminal-time offa!"
The rat gives a big toothy grin, then his eyes dart around to look for anyone else around them. Hot Potato Artifact Spirited (When this enters the battlefield, you may activate one of its abilities without paying its cost.) : If you control Hot Potato, target opponent gains control of it. I love minigame cards like this, and I think it's a good use of spirited. I kind of wish the activated ability was a little cheaper so it could get passed a bit more readily. 7/10Yakana takes a side glance to the sudden appearance of the rat and his ensuing pitch. A petitioner approaches Yakana near sunset with a smile and deferential nod; they are garbed in a red damask coat with gold trim patterns. "Good evening, Lady of Branching Paths. It's hard for me to see the environment this goes in and the irrational EDH part of my brain is squirrely about land interaction but this card does well to be balanced for what it does, despite my personal gripes. Also I'm not the American Education System so my score still means passing and I like it. 6/10.Yakana's ear perks up at the sound of the retainer's voice, and she swivels on the tip-toe of her foot to face them. I kind of love Go Fish? It's very up my wheelhouse for the style of play I enjoy most and I think it's fair for what it does. 9/10Yakana perks up for a moment, and she grins as her eyes narrow. The give a short laugh at the irreverence. "Then let us be off at once!" With that, they lead Yakana along a short trail to a town under the watch of a keep of white bastions and red banners, and as they walk to their destination, the petitioner introduces themselves. "I am Syr Lothaire, Knight of the Radiant Order. These are prosperous enough lands that an enemy is best slain with feasts and stories rather than a blade—though a great many brutes have tried otherwise." Entering the keep, Yakana finds the venue for the evening to be the council chamber, at the center of which is a round table lit by a chandelier seemingly forged of light itself. A chamber quartet is at the ready in the choir seats.
Though a round table has no apparent place of honor, the knights in attendance give short bows in respect to the petitioner as they take their seat at a place that to this point has been kept conspicuously empty. "Please, sit wherever you prefer; my retinue shall accommodate you however is necessary." All around the table, whether by Lothaire's side, or at the very opposite side, their retinue is willing to give their place up for their honored guest. Creature — Human Bard Knight First strike, prowess
When Bard of the Order enters the battlefield, return target noncreature, nonland card from your graveyard to your hand.

Gravitas — This is substantially less useful at sorcery speed than it would be otherwise, and at multicolour (seemingly of the shared interest kind since both of these modes are in the U/R intersection), it warrants the additional power that it does not have. As a synergy piece, it also runs into problems due to the Knight's ability being a tempo play that becomes substantially less valuable as the game continues; in this case, it would be two freezes on turn five, which isn't as useful as delaying someone's turn 3 in a limited environment. Otherwise, it is appropriate to pair trigger doubling with spell doubling. 6/10

Bard of the Order - I have a deep love for slow boros and the archetypes this color air encourages when it has time to breathe. This is a perfect example of that and this feels wonderful as a late game piece that can win you the game and give you extra value. 9/10Yakana attempts to keep pace with Lothaire in a manner that would not outpace them. Yakana eventually finds a rhythm of movement that matches Lothaire's, though her footsteps don't actually match the pace she walks in. She simply slides along an invisible access as her feet occasionally touch the ground. Her head occasionally turns either which way to take in her surroundings, quietly absorbing the visual stimuli. As they arrive at the keep, Yakana is surprised to see no decadent noble aloft in a cushioned throne. She takes her seat opposite to Lothaire, leaning her seat back a bit and crossing her legs under it. Her chair remains precariously balanced in this position but she rarely shifts any farther back. "Not that I have much at stake, but why am I really here? the table of decorated warriors, the chandelier made of magical light, it is all a bit much even for me. You address me by my title as if I am some guest of honor and not one sought out in desperation or begrudged hatred. I'm not one to pry but I must know why I'm here, if only to find certainty you're not trying to poison me." Aetherslag Pummeling Sorcery When you cast this spell, copy it for each noncreature spell you cast this turn. You may choose new targets for the copies. Aetherslag Pummeling deals 2 damage to target creature or planeswalker. When a creature dealt damage this way dies, Aetherslag pummeling deals 2 damage to that creature's controller.

Ahsetar Honor Guard - Not every day you see the flag bearer. I'm personally not a fan of the mechanic since it removes a lot of the interaction in board states, since that tends to be my favorite thing about magic, and that it gets less good the more flag bearers you draft. I however really do like the implementation and think it's a really creative take on an older mechanic. 7/10Yakana turns to view the man. She currently lies under the shade of a large tree, swaddled in her loose clothing as the sun begins to set. The menacing aura that surrounds the man does not crack her aloof disposition, but as soon as he fully steps into view, Yakana's nose scrunches. She clears her throat, and rises to her feet, her back sliding up the side of the tree. Having ascended an extra few inches above the ground, Yakana lowers herself until the pads of her feet meet earth."Oh, have we met?" Yakana briefly outstretches her hand before immediately regretting doing so and placing her hand back at her side. "You must have come back from something of dire importance to meet me in that...condition. Is there something I can help you with or did you peg me as hospitable company. Darling I do understand I have that effect on people either way.Gravity Spike Instant Name a nonland permanent an opponent controls. That player puts that card on the top or bottom of their library. "Well, it's not every day you see a pink humanoid talking fox." Vidus pauses, thinking for a second. "Well... unless you're you, I guess. And the dirt is, uhhhh big dirt monster, that uhhhh attacked me on my way here. Yeah, the ground just uhhhh leapt up and attacked me. I barely made it out alive!"
Vidus, confident in his terrible lying skills, smiles at Yakana.
Gravity Spike: I love cards that name cards, but this should say "That player puts all permanents they control with that name..." because there can be multiple permanents on the field that have the same name (tokens also can get hit by this), and cards like Aether Gust and Anchor to the Aether don't say "card" when referencing the object to be put into the library. 7/10Homarid Namecaster Creature - Homarid Wizard When ~ ETB, up to three other permanents gain ~'s name. Whenever ~ deals combat damage to a player, scry X, where X is the number of permanents that player controls that share a name with ~. 2/1 Homarid Namecaster First of all, Homarids for life. Secondly, I think I like this best as a synergy piece for like...name tribal, and I think this has a decent payoff. Scry 3 is a good amount of repeatable scry but I think it's perfectly balanced for a 2/1. 8/10In my case, I can go anywhere and see a human covered in dirt, but oooo you're special, aren't you? I almost missed the smell since it was masked by the stench of decay, but you sir have the stink of greatness."Yakana smiles broadly at Vidus. "I can get you cleaned up, if you'd like. If not I understand. I'm sure you're proud, brandishing the innards of the beast you've slain on your hands and in your fingernails; I know many hunters who do. I do, I really do believe you serve a special purpose. Perhaps you can call it conjecture but it seems as if everyone I meet has some hidden talent to them. If you would agree to give me your name and tell me what you do for a living I would be delighted. Oh! and where are my manners? I am Yakana, of the Branching Paths. It is a boundless pleasure to make your acquaintance." Yakana bows into a deep courtesy.Shifting Identities Instant Choose target creature. It becomes a copy of another target creature until end of turn.

Yakana perks up for a moment, and she grins as her eyes narrow. She begins thinking.Yakana snaps her fingers and yelps just a bit in excitement. She then gestures for him to lean in a bit so that she may whisper. "I know just the place. On a dusty old plane in a fetid swamp there's a church of darkness gawking rubes who pit the common folk against one another for fun and profit. Below the proving grounds are vast storehouses of piles upon piles of the glittering gold they amass and scrape from corpses. I'm sure you could get in, shovel as your little paws can muster into your sack then disappear without a trace."Yakana pauses again, scratching behind her ear. "Oh, um, hmm. No I thing they were usurped by demons. My dearest apologies, the years run together sometimes, especially when you travel as much as I do. Either way with a little digging I'm sure you'll find it. People like that just build over the old temple of the old bauble they used to worship after finding a new shiny to revere. If that's a sound trade then I'll be happy to take the pearls and if needed I can give some more specifics."Ardent Plotting " style="max-width:100%;"] Sorcery Scry 3, then reveal the top three cards of your library. Put a noncreature, nonland card revealed this way into your hand and the rest on the bottom of your library in any order. "Hrmmm, that does sound like quuu-wite the interestin' place for li'l ol me to take a visit to, an' I'm shure me an th' demons can come to an agreeable sorta deal of sorts, just likes the twos of us heres."
He rolls the pearls in his paws. "If Zweil's supposed ta find this place though, I's gotta know wheresabout this place is at! Th' dusty plane anna fetid swamp anna churcha darkness. There's so many a those out there's, but not so many of these lovely pearls." Sorcery " style="max-width:100%;"] Choose target permanent. Starting with you, each player bids an amount of life. Each player loses life equal to the amount of life they bid, then the player who bid the most gains control of the chosen permanent. You gain life equal to the greatest amount of life an opponent lost this way. Ardent Plotting - Consult the Dewdrops is pretty good and this is an okay sidegrade. this could probably just grab the top 6 to be simpler. 7/10 Haggle I think it's a little convoluted, but ultimately fine. it feels kind of bad that your opponent always gets the choice being second bid, but at that point it makes it a kind of neat Browbeat. My only concern is that the last line is essentially flavor text since an opponent either decides they're willing to lose some life to keep their stuff or they can bid like zero or one life and let you have it anyway. This works a lot better in multiplayer which might be the point, but even then it makes it easier for your own spell to screw you over. 6/10 Yakana Exhales through her nose just a bit, eyeing the pearls zealously. She has no idea if they're real or if she actually wants them at this point but she feels invested enough to where there is no point in not going into specifics."My dear I speak of Dominaria, a plane I know best for being the most inconveniencing plane in the multiverse. If it could just stay quiet and peaceful or die off for good or something, a lot less of the problematic elements I have to deal with wouldn't have happened. There's a cabal of . . . cabal there who throw all their loot into enormous vaults just to collect dust. You'd be doing me a favor to rob those clowns blind. They're responsible for a lot of what I'm talking about. I can't literally guide you there, so the best you can do is hop around until you find it. I'm not sure what else I can do for you at this point. Can I please have those pearls now? They don't go with this outfit but I have something they might go with." Yakana stands and her feet meet ground once more, and she outstretches her hand, making a very large amount of eye contact. Yakana does not blink for the duration of said eye contact.Aetherlash Instant Return target nonland permanent to its owner's hand, then Aetherlash deals X damage to Target opponent, where X is the number of cards in that player's hand.

Shifting Identities: Supremely cool card. Love that it can basically be a combat trick. 10/10Curse of Hybridization " style="max-width:100%;"] Enchantment - Aura Curse Enchant player Whenever a creature enchanted player controls becomes the target of a spell, it becomes a 2/2 blue Frog Lizard creature after that spell resolves. (It does not lose any abilities.) Curse of Hybridization I'm having trouble finding good ways to use this, either you stick it on your stuff to make it into 2/2s, or you stick it on the opponent to make their creatures smaller if they're 3/3 or larger. The only issue is, if an opponent is playing stuff like auras or combat tricks, it's pretty likely their creatures will be 2/2 or lower already. Since the effect happens after the spell resolves, you can't use this to turn shocks into kill spells either. I'm not super high on this card. 4/10Yakana leans in to get a closer look at the man's shovel, her feet leaving the ground as she stoops forward. Her eyes sparkle when her eyes meet the gemstone embedded within it. "That's a pretty shovel for someone who's either a professional ditch digger or the world's greatest corpse hauler. Where'd you get it? Steal it from an ancient tomb? Was it a gift from your sweetheart who's also a necroamancer? It just seems so . . ."Yakana loses herself for a moment before snapping herself out of her enraptured stupor. "I'll give you five gold coins and a favor for it. You already refused to be cleaned but I'm sure there's something else you could want. I'm a woman of means, I'm sure I can help you."Fevered Rage Instant Target creature loses all abilities until end of turn. When it does, it deals 3 damage to itself. Jump the Fence This is really funny flavor wise and I kind of love it, though I'm confused by the implications of it. Why does it need trample if you're gaining control of the attacker? Would the creature still block even though you control it? Can creatures even attack after blockers are declared? Brain hurt aside I love it. 7/10Yakana smiles as Zweil speaks, rolling the pearls in her fingers. "Let this be an ever prosperous union, my dear. If you seek me once more, you will know me as Yakana, Lady of the Branching Paths. You are of course, Zweil, purveyor of fine goods. I do hope we meet again very soon, ta!"Yakana waves as her departs and begins to place the pearls around her neck until she feels the heat blow against her face. The fur on her cheeks puff up slightly, and she groans to herself, grooming it back to proper order. "Excuse me, miss. What business might you have with my new business partner. Certainly whatever it is isn't worth drudging through the mud. Why not come sit a spell and air your grievance. He's long gone by now. No use working yourself to a fit. Or, you can choose to stew and continue dragging yourself through filth." Yakana grins a bit more as she fidgets with the pearls around her neck.Fall to Mist Instant " style="max-width:100%;"] Exile target creature. The string quartet begins to play. "I would not impose upon a guest to prepare their own tea, but we would not be offended if you took the precaution." Already, tea is being being poured for each of the knights in attendance, as though it had been prepared in advance. A cup is reserved for Yakana as well. "You are addressed as a guest of honor because you were sought neither for a grudge nor for desperation. From your arrival, there have already been whispers of your venerable age, broad knowledge, and yes, your affinity for tea. I thought you would be interesting company—and besides that, as a walker of planes, you have much in common with many conquerors and aspiring gods who have visited us in the past. I hope that you, at least, can be a friend to The Arena—though at warmth matching your preference." Lothaire motions to the teacup before Yakana, from which steam still rises. They take a moment to drink their own share. "And you needn't worry about the expense of any magical light. Such conjurations are the specialty of our Order, though I sincerely hope you will never have to see their more practical applications."Feudal Exception Enchantment As Feudal Exception enters the battlefield, choose a nonland type. Each player can't cast more than one spell not of the chosen type each turn.
//Choosing "Creature".
Aetherslag Pummeling — Actual storm spells had wording that unambigiously excluded them from the spell count for their ability; this does not. However, unlike a lot of storm burn spells, the bounds on whether or not this can win you the game on the spot are controlled by your opponent, which is good. Lastly, the scaling on this is a bit steep, which is unfortunate for a spell of its style. 7/10

It's easy to lose yourself in the moment. Vidus laughs dryly. "Oh, believe me, I couldn't get rid of this thing if I tried. It was a gift from my father, who's, well.... um.... it's complicated." Vidus turns the shovel around in his hand, idly studying its facets, as if he hadn't seen it hundreds- nay, thousands- of times before. "Oh, and believe me," he added. "I've tried to get rid of this thing. I've tried gifting it to other people, I tried dropping the damn thing in lava, I even tied it to a rock and threw it into an ocean once. Of course, that was when I actively despised this thing, which was right after..." Vidus stops, his eyes un-focusing. His grip on his shovel slightly loosens as his hands begin to slightly shake until the shovel drops out of his hands. Vidus blinks, his eyes re-focusing. He stoops down and picks his shovel back up. "Sorry, where was I? Ah yes, the shovel. Trust me, you wouldn't want this anyway."
Fevered Rage: Seems like an interesting card for red. 10/10

However, unlike a lot of storm burn spells, the bounds on whether or not this can win you the game on the spot are controlled by your opponent, which is good. Lastly, the scaling on this is a bit steep, which is unfortunate for a spell of its style. 7/10 Feudal Exception - Pretty cool. A bit weaker than the typical rule of law type card, but it makes up for it in being able to make it possibly one sided. Choosing a specific type doesn't matter much, since if you know what to name it'll be as potent as a regular style of this card 7/10Yakana smiles broadly as her chair becomes planted on the ground and she straightens her back. "Aren't you such a sweetheart, with all this flattery, I'm positively drowning it in. I'm sure our friendship will be the stuff of legends."Yakana takes a sip of tea and gestures up to the lighting as she does. "The fixtures are quite impressive. Fine work to be sure, which you should consider high praise." Yakana laughs a bit. Her laugh is raucous, almost ill-befitting one such as the lady of branching paths."If you ever need anything, would you kindly let me know? There has to be something you want to get those mitts on. With a proper exchange, I can make it happen."Flippant Remark Instant Return target creature to its owner's hand. if it entered the battlefield this turn, draw a card. "To think some people would rather be banished than speak to me!"

Curse of Hybridization I'm having trouble finding good ways to use this, either you stick it on your stuff to make it into 2/2s, or you stick it on the opponent to make their creatures smaller if they're 3/3 or larger. I'm a woman of means, I'm sure I can help you."Fevered Rage " style="max-width:100%;"] Instant Target creature loses all abilities until end of turn. When it does, it deals 3 damage to itself.
Nantuko Brawler " style="max-width:100%;"] Creature - Insect Berserker " style="max-width:100%;"] Trample Whenever a creature you control becomes the target of a spell, it gets +1/+1 until EOT. 1/1 Nantuko Brawler - This could honestly be a 2/2, considering it's a rare. I still like this space for green. 7/10Yakana listens intently and leans in even more to listen, violating whatever personal space there was left to be had between the two. As Vidus recollects himself, Yakana starts speaking about three inches away from his face. "Oh my! Aren't we positively sopping with horrific traumas! You should tell me more some time. I'm sure it's quite the story. If Vidus where to attempt to or accidentally brush against Yakana, she would speedily pull away with reflexive unnatural speed, recoiling against the slightest thought of contact."If you're so attached you should probably keep it. Cursed artifacts and their unwilling hosts have to stick together, afterall, hmm?" Yakana finally does get out of his face, ushering herself back to a comfortable distance."You've been around, haven't you? Do tell, have you come across a thin greasy man in a dark brown coat and a cylindrical device on his side? He and I go way back, and he recently took something from me; something very precious. It would be lovely if you could point me in his direction."Ephemeral Infiltration Instant When you cast this spell, copy it for each other instant or sorcery spell you cast this turn. You may choose new targets for the copies. Target creature you control gets +1/+1 and has "Whenever this creature deals combat damage to a player, draw a card" until end of turn.

Its function could help pinpoint where exactly he is."
Ephemeral Infiltration: Seems very cool. I like "toned-down storm" here, especially since it needs creatures to function and so it makes them not proc the spell. 10/10
Quandrix Cephalopod Creature - Fractal Squid Whenever you draw a card, create a 1/1 blue Fractal Tentacle token. 1/1

Yakana smiles as Zweil speaks, rolling the pearls in her fingers. Or, you can choose to stew and continue dragging yourself through filth." Yakana grins a bit more as she fidgets with the pearls around her neck.Fall to Mist Instant Exile target creature. It's owner creates an X/X blue Illusion creature token, where X is equal to that creature's mana value. "The business..." the blue-haired woman grunts as she wrestles her leg free of the mud. "Is that rat stole my necklace." She looks to the fox, giving Yakana a better look at the girl's ridiculously oversized orange coat and long orange gloves. She also sports a belt with some small canisters fitted into it. Her eyes narrow.
"And let me guess, sold it to you!" she yells and tries running for Yakana.
she doesn't have the big metal thing (yet) Fall to Mist - 8/10

The quartet's first piece comes to a close, but there is more in store for the evening. None of it will be trouble, however, unless Yakana wishes there to be. Flippant Remark — A good tempo piece in some environments, where its "fail" case can still be useful if it wins you the game. No issues here. 9/10

Yakana lets out a small smug chuckle at her own joke. "You're a planeswalker, clearly. My, it seems many people here are. I don't work like you or most others. For me to have a real grip on the plane I'm in, I need an anchor, something to tie me to the plane physically and mentally. HE took that from me, and now I need a new anchor, which is going to be such a chore, hun, you have no idea. So, the man needs to die. He needed to anyhow but now I feel the need to tell people about it. I'll tell you what, if you bring me his head on a platter, I'll owe you a favor. Anything that dirt covered head could imagine. Sound fair enough? You can buy money, information, or death! Death is the most fun but do make sure they deserve it. I don't slaughter innocents you know. Yakana waggles her finger a bit and crosses her legs, taking a sitting position midair as she speaks.Energetic outburst

Still a fan. 7/10 Yakana shoots up several feet into the air without making a single move, as if simply slid along the Y axis, legs crossed, pearls in hand."Do tell, what are your plans with me? All I did was participate in a simple business transaction, and you would charge at me in such a brutish way! For shame. Perhaps, with I remaining at a safe distance, we can discuss this like civil beings. It won't do you much to try and catch him, as you know, and I would wager you couldn't do much to catch me. I simply can't just give you your pearls back; I paid well for them. If you could pay me in kind, then they're yours once more. I don't mean coin either, darling. I deal in secrets and information.
