This is my first post on this forum, excited to be here! My entry is Deflect N. It's my attempt to fix Absorb N. Absorb appears on only one card and has Storm Scale rating 8, because of its high power level: to paraphrase Mark Rosewater in his Future Sight podcast, a 5/5 with even just Absorb 1 already survives two Lightning Bolts. I thought it would be fun to see if, with a small tweak, I could make the mechanic work more as 'intended'. The mechanic ended up feeling very flavourful for the Ojutai monks of Tarkir, so here is my example card: Ojutai's Border Guard Creature - Human Monk Deflect 2 (If a source would deal damage to this creature while it's untapped, tap it and prevent 2 of that damage.): Untap Ojutai's Border Guard. The Great Teacher knows all. What made you think you could ambush his disciple?2/2 It may be slightly too complex for common, but I like the design and wanted to share it. Good luck to all, have fun! I don't know if its just me, but I can't see the picture here. Maybe its because you linked to the page containing the picture and not the url of the picture itself: i.ibb.co/hCcySyK/8-Ojutai-s-Border-Guard.jpgSeems to be a nice inbetween of absorb and regenerate. In the picture the untap cost seem to be a normal blue mana. Why use half mana ( instead of ) in the text version? Thanks for the help and the interest! The post was a bit more difficult to make on my smartphone than I thought, and I ran out of time in the morning commute Both issues are fixed now. Greetings from the evening commute, good luck to all!

Chandra's Gift Enchantment — Aura Enchant non-Chandra planeswalker Whenever enchanted planeswalker activates one of its loyalty abilities, it deals 2 damage to any target. "Light 'em up!"I'm pretty surprised we don't have one of these yet.

I was half-jokingly thinking of calling this "Puncher", decided to take the idea seriously, and this is the result: Lightning Jabber Creature - Goblin Warrior Corkscrew (You may pay an additional as you cast this spell. If you do, it enters the battlefield tapped.)Whenever ~ becomes untapped, you may have it deal 1 damage to any target. 1/1 "The smaller they are, the easier they fall!"The idea is to mimic the 'twist' motion used for a corkscrew punch with the tapped-into-untap movement. Corkscrew would typically show up on designs that want to untap for value, but would have a difficult time doing so by themselves.

I don't think you'd need to have *any* cost to that because entering tapped is a *downside* under normal circumstances. Getting a single guaranteed Inspired trigger is nice, but A. that's very delayed and B. you'd still have to balance the normal cost of the thing around it being played normally. It's not like things tapping and untapped is any sort of uncommon occurrence in the game.

Disruption Blast Instant Target spell gains Antimagic and then deals 2 damage to its controller. (As a spell it can not be targetted.) This is more like shroud then hexproof as it has the slight utility of preventing a spell from being copied or similar by its controller via targetting spells. This hopefully should be easier to tack onto otherwise weak common cards then "This spell can't be countered." which strangely has never been put on a common.

Stolen keyword from u/graciousgroob {Text} Rushed Interceptors Creature - Human Soldier Aikido ( , Return a blocking creature you control to hand. Put this card onto the battlefield blocking the same creature.) 1/3

"This spell can't be countered." which strangely has never been put on a common. I think we could have a Heated Debate about whether that's really true or not..
This thread is now closed, the poll can be found here. And here's the next challenge!
