Welcome to the Deckbuilders' Challenge originally created by sdfkjgh! To participate in this Contest you'll have to design a deck along the contest guidelines and throw it into the arena with other competitors' entries! At the end of every two weeks, a winner will be determined by forum poll, and the winner decides the challenge for the next fortnight's Contest! Here we go, competitors: our forty-forth challenge! The winners of the “Library of Rarities poll“ were BinaryBolas, ZephyrPhantom and Daij_Djan with... |
(EDH + Rule 0: HOTR cards legal)
{Comments} (Or: How I Died By Playing Lands Alone) (Or, or: How WOTC Warp the Design Space for Commander Players)This deck is a soft-combo Legendary matters deck (The combo is The Cinematic Phoenix). To make the win feasible, I choose to bring the Dredge package (-) cheap creatures that bring themselves back (+) big reanimation spells ( Entreat the Dead and such). So yes, it is a bad reanimator deck. Sol, Advocate Eternal serves only the purpose of making the deck 5C and making the Phoenix play consistent. If you are fortunate enough to have Leyline of Singularity in play (Start of game or Academy Rector) you can speed up the combo win since your utility/ramp creatures can help you activate the Phoenix's ability. Many cards in the deck are in Secret Lair printings because of Keeper of the Secret Lair. Ignore the second ability of Rarity since it (she? I didn't watch the series) is only a glorified mana rock (yup I said it). Champions of Archery is mostly for the Join the Group side, where you can make something like Sisay or Sisay your commander so that you can repeatedly play them. Also let's just pretend you can activate the second ability of The Secret Lair by saying "the secret word", okay? (If not, treat that card as something like City of Brass since I'm hurt that you would say no to that and you will probably die first if we play against each other ) |

(Hasta La Vista)
{Comments} The 15 Wastes correspond to: 3x T-800 Terminator3x Mishra's Buick3x Agent Smith3x T-10003x Staff of the MagiThe idea is to assemble Tron and wreak havoc with some of cinema's most iconic machine villains and a Buick. Cards like Agent Smith and Mishra's Buick function better with something to sacrifice to them so we can either use T-800 Terminator or the tokens produced by Urza's Factory. |

(Commander)
{Comments}First of all: Nether watched My Little Pony, so I know nothing about this character. Nethertheless, I really liked Rarity when I first saw the card since I've dabbled in the design space of caring about rarities myself a few in the past. As mentioned above though, I really wanted to have some sort of theme beyond just "play rares / mythics", and then I suddenly had an idea. At first I didn't expect it to work but yeah, it did work out in the end somehow. So, when you look at the decklist, do you get the theme? {Or do you need a little hint..?} Yes, that's right. Every single card in the 99 comes right out of a Secret Lair product. Sure, this results in the deck not having a big mechanical focus - but it's rather scary how nicely the deck built itself nethertheless.. Also, let's be real here: If you don't like it, just give it a year and you'll have many new and exiting options to include |
|
And the challenge issued by one of our winners was... Please provide a decklist using deckstats, tappedout or similar. Feel free to add some comments as they will be included in the final poll. Please provide a deck name as well as choose a card to represent your deck in the poll. And now, time to begin the challenge! Best of luck, competitors!

"A Late Christmas Group Hug" (EDH)Since we took a break during Christmas, I hereby present a late Christmas gift -- a group hug deck for your EDH playgroups! The leader is chosen as such since it is in the color of snowy Christmas -- RGW a. k. a. Naya.
This is a straight-forward deck with a heavy aura theme. It says so in the title "Group Hug", so we will send our opponents' creatures many auras as our gifts. Many of the auras are recyclable, so the gifts just keep on giving.
Of course you need to survive on your own, so there are also many enchantments that are just solid on their own or are just stupid on their own, and there are many enchantment synergies within the color. (which there are many since we are in the enchantress color. Wish they print more enchantment related cards for this color.)
But ultimately, it's a Group Hug deck. When you play this deck, remember the holiday spirit, and rememeber Everything that belongs to you also belongs to everyone.

Why are you calling it Naya when it's so clearly Dimir? If this is your attempt at subtle humor, Lord Szadek and Guildmaster Lazav are both VERY disappoint, son.

The cover boy was supposed to be Jared Carthalion, but WOTC issued me a warning about something something illegal deckbuilding requirement something. Otherwise my infiltration will be perfect. I thought to not confuse fellow agents, an Italic spice of wording would suffice to cipher the hidden message among the notions. ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?

GodoTron(Legacy, Casual)Deck ListLong before the days of Stoneforge Mystic, Godo, Bandit Warlord existed as a possible way to cheat expensive equipment into play. With the existence of Living Weapons, this effectively means Godo could play some pretty nifty creatures while coming down as body of its own - Batterskull in particular works perfectly with the extra combat phase, but we also run a Nettlecyst to hardcast in mana screwed situations and Kaldra Compleat if we need something more resilient. (More specifically, in case our opponent is a fan of cards like Strip Bare or more realistically Shatterstorm or Terastodon, we run cards like Sundering Titan and Kozilek, Butcher of Truth to try and dodge such removal in game 2.) To ensure we're able to cast Godo on time, we run a straightforward MonoRed Tron package with Karn, the Great Creator being able to pull from it as our plan B. Red is not exactly the ideal Tron color, so I put Faithless Looting in this deck to help it along - unfortunately, this means for a roughly Modern power level deck, it's only Legacy legal and up, but that's something you should be able to work out at the kitchen table or digital table.
