Welcome to the Deckbuilders' Challenge originally created by sdfkjgh! To participate in this Contest you'll have to design a deck along the contest guidelines and throw it into the arena with other competitors' entries! At the end of every two weeks, a winner will be determined by forum poll, and the winner decides the challenge for the next fortnight's Contest! Here we go, competitors: our forty-second challenge! The winner of the “Decks of Complete Collections poll“ was ZephyrPhantom with... |
{Comments} So the reveal of Ulvenwald Oddity has resulted in some people pointing out "Moose" is not a Creature type (presumably because it would be too close to Elk). This leads to an interesting situation where among Magic cards featuring Mooses, some are Elks, and some like Ulvenwald Oddity are Beasts or something else. I decided to make a Tribal Wars-style deck featuring the various Mooses of Magic, with a bit of rough eyeballing and whatever I could find on Google (apparently a few Planeswalkers out there have already made private Moose tribal decks.) To make a long story short, moose apparently have distinctive beards and a more bell-shaped nose. Now, it turns out that if you just shove all the meese in Magic into a deck, you just get a badly imbalanced deck that is full of mostly 4-5 mana creatures. Normally, we'd resort to all manners of Green ramp, but it turns out everything from Rampant Growth to Fyndhorn Elves sees plenty of printings because what do you know, people like good ramp. The exception tend to be cards like Ruin in Their Wake that have very set-specific gimmicks... but that inspired me to look into Snow cards as I realized cards like Into the North and On Thin Ice are either single prints or have been reprinted very few times, either by being new cards or Snow 'staples' that haven't been focused on very often. Because the Snow duals instead got better versions in Kaldheim with basic land typing, this applied to both of them too, which is great for us as it means we can tap into other snow based payoffs like Blizzard Brawl to give our deck more interesting removal that isn't held down by the challenge restriction. You will notice a general absence of cards that cost 3 mana but I feel this is acceptable due to the number of etb tapped lands we work with. A small selection of 1-2 mana support and setup is better to use on those turns until we can start slamming meese onto the table. |
And the challenge issued by our winner was... Make a deck that features at least one 'unusual card' from Magic Librarities's Magic Rarities. I recommend looking under "Fantasy Cards", "Gift Cards", "Computer Game Cards", "Non-Official Cards", "Playtest Cards", and "Unprinted Sets and Expansions Cards" to start. For those looking for a stricter definition, an 'unusual card' can thought of as a card that either A) did not have an official printing or B) was never legal in any Magic Format. So certain cards like 1996 World Champion and Shichifukujin Dragon (Listed under "Ultra Rare Cards" -> "Unique Cards") will also qualify. Please provide a decklist using deckstats, tappedout or similar. Feel free to add some comments as they will be included in the final poll. Please provide a deck name as well as choose a card to represent your deck in the poll.And now, time to begin the challenge! Best of luck, competitors!

Heroes of the Dredge (EDH + Rule 0: HOTR cards legal)(Or: How I Died By Playing Lands Alone) (Or, or: How WOTC Warp the Design Space for Commander Players)This deck is a soft-combo Legendary matters deck (The combo is The Cinematic Phoenix). To make the win feasible, I choose to bring the Dredge package (-) cheap creatures that bring themselves back (+) big reanimation spells ( Entreat the Dead and such). So yes, it is a bad reanimator deck. Sol, Advocate Eternal serves only the purpose of making the deck 5C and making the Phoenix play consistent. If you are fortunate enough to have Leyline of Singularity in play (Start of game or Academy Rector) you can speed up the combo win since your utility/ramp creatures can help you activate the Phoenix's ability. Many cards in the deck are in Secret Lair printings because of Keeper of the Secret Lair. Ignore the second ability of Rarity since it (she? I didn't watch the series) is only a glorified mana rock (yup I said it). Champions of Archery is mostly for the Join the Group side, where you can make something like Sisay or Sisay your commander so that you can repeatedly play them. Also let's just pretend you can activate the second ability of The Secret Lair by saying "the secret word", okay? (If not, treat that card as something like City of Brass since I'm hurt that you would say no to that and you will probably die first if we play against each other )

I find Black Border Long Stripes to be an especially efficient meta call.

And I just realized I completely forgot setting up last week's poll.. Sorry everyone, this challenge being bi-weekly really makes it tough for me to remember the schedules sometimes for some reason xD
That aside, not really sure what kind of deck I want to build. Currently a Rarity Commander deck seems like the most intesting choice..
EDIT: Actually, I think that is exactly what I'll be doing - now that I have an idea for a theme...

(Note: If you have to feature only one card I'd like it to be Mishra's Buick.) Get to Da Buick(Hasta La Vista)DecklistThe 15 Wastes correspond to: 3x T-800 Terminator3x Mishra's Buick3x Agent Smith3x T-10003x Staff of the MagiThe idea is to assemble Tron and wreak havoc with some of cinema's most iconic machine villains and a Buick. Cards like Agent Smith and Mishra's Buick function better with something to sacrifice to them so we can either use T-800 Terminator or the tokens produced by Urza's Factory.

(Commander)
First of all: Nether watched [My Little Pony, so I know nothing about this character. Nethertheless, I really liked ] Rarity when I first saw the card since I've dabbled in the design space of caring about rarities myself a few in the past.
As mentioned above though, I really wanted to have some sort of theme beyond just "play rares / mythics", and then I suddenly had an idea. At first I didn't expect it to work but yeah, it did work out in the end somehow.
So, when you look at the decklist, do you get the theme?
{Or do you need a little hint..?}
Yes, that's right. Every single card in the 99 comes right out of a Secret Lair product. Sure, this results in the deck not having a big mechanical focus - but it's rather scary how nicely the deck built itself nethertheless.. Also, let's be real here: If you don't like it, just give it a year and you'll have many new and exiting options to include
This thread is now closed, the poll can be found here. And here's the next challenge!
