Welcome to the Card of the Week Contest! To participate in this Contest you'll have to design a card along the contest guidelines and throw it into the arena with other competitors' entries! At the end of each week, a winner will be determined by forum poll. The winner's card will be rendered and featured on the Welcome page, and the winner decides the challenge for the next week's Contest! Here we go, competitors: our three-hundred and eighty-sixth challenge! The winner of the "Real Estate" poll was inverness with...And the challenge issued by our winner was... With the revamped Daybound/Nightbound mechanic, WotC has shown that there's potential for mechanics that care about an abstract concept regarding the game state. Your challenge this week is to create or reuse a mechanic that does just that.Examples: Daybound/Nightbound, City's Blessing, or a custom mechanic where the seasons change, etc To increase your chances of winning and to also make creating the poll easier on whomever is doing so, please try to use a render. Additionally, please try to keep your entry edits all in one post - if you need to change it you can put your old entry in a spoiler marked "Old entry" and leave the newest rendition to be seen. Just use the edit button in the top/right of your original post. And now, time to begin the challenge! Best of luck, competitors!

Planechase doesn't get enough love (It's my opinion that every set deserves to have an auxilary plane deck with 8-10 planes cards, 2-4 phenomena cards (not a full planechase product, just some support for the planechase format)). And that's why I think we should have cards that care about what plane you're on. - Planebond <plane> -- When/Whenever fum happens, if you're on <plane>, Foo.
- Planebond <plane> -- Cost: Foo. Activate this ability only if you're on <plane>.
- Planebond <plane> -- As long as your on <plane>, Foo.
And now a card.
| Wrecked Ship’s Captain A generic, a black, and a green
Creature - Human Berserker
Pay a generic, a black, and a green: Wrecked Ship's Captain fights another target creature. Pay three generic, a black, and a green: Wrecked Ship's Captain deals damage equal to its power to another target creature. Planebond Kaldheim -- As long as you're on Kaldheim, Wrecked Ship's Captain has deathtouch and its abilities cost 1 less to activate.
3/4.
Art Description: A lady viking dressed in impractically sexy armor wades into water to kill the kraken attacking and destroying her ship.

How about an Un- card? This one requires a bit of description, so bear with me. A good starting frame of reference would be Water Gun Balloon Game. Art shows two support struts with notches numbered 0-10, ascending as they go up the struts, with a Giant’s legs and waist behind the pole, which is at its waist, at 10.
Limbo Pole Artifact Limbo Pole enters the battlefield with its bar set to 10. Only X creatures can attack per turn, where X is Limbo Pole’s bar level. Creatures with power and/or toughness greater than Limbo Pole’s bar level can’t attack. Communal Ability—: Lower Limbo Pole’s bar one notch. Activate this ability only any time you could cast a sorcery.
Communal abilities can be activated by any player.

Trying something in the vein of day/night:
Creature - Human Warlock Tidal (Whenever a card enters a graveyard for the first time each turn, the tide changes.) Whenever it becomes low tide, return target creature card from a graveyard to the battlefield under your control. Whenever it becomes high tide, destroy all other creatures. [1/1]
Like day/night, when a permanent with tidal enters the battlefield, it becomes low tide, and then the game state switches between high and low tide.

Hey Vunik , your two versions of the card don't behave identically. | | Desolating Tidemage Two Generic, A white, and a black Creature - Human Warlock
Whenever it becomes low tide, return target creature card from a graveyard to the battlefield under your control.
Whenever it becomes high tide, destroy all other creatures.
1/1
| Desolating Tidemage Two Generic, A white, and a black Creature - Human Warlock
Whenever Desolating Tidemage enters the battlefield or it becomes low tide, return target creature card from a graveyard to the battlefield under your control. Whenever it becomes high tide, destroy all other creatures.
1/1 | This one triggers when it enters the battlefield, but only if the tide isn't being tracked.
| This one always triggers on etb, and I'd argue it can trigger twice when it etb if the tide isn't yet being tracked (Once on true etb and a second time when it becomes low tide). |
Beyond that, either version of the card is absurdly powerful (A reaccurring unrestricted reanimation and boardwipe on a two turn clock (one or fewer turn rotations), for four mana: I'd put this right at the cusp of power 9 tier) and I don't know if you've fully considered the implication of how cards can enter the graveyard: by mill and discard, fetching to the graveyard, as well as casting nonpermanent spells etc, and I doubt that's your intent (if it is, that's okay; but you definitely need to balance with that in mind); I'd just want to confirm that's the case.

Thanks for the feedback - I had missed that the triggers wouldn't work the same.
As for power level considerations, there were basically none as I was making it. (Although, I could have sworn I made it cost 5 or more.) It's definitely a design that probably needed a little bit longer in the oven, so to speak, which I (hopefully) would have caught in the coming days. That being said, you're definitely right that it's absurdly powerful as-is. My approach would probably be either making the triggers have a cost, or making the board wipe include itself, making it a harder card to abuse.
I did consider the ways that cards could enter the graveyard, and while I misjudged the mark here, I think that it should be fine? Just ultimately requires smaller effects than, y'know, a board wipe/reanimator combo.
I'll probably get around to posting a more balanced variant soontm.

How about an anti-monarch? Poison-Blade Strangler Creature . Salamander Assassin When Poison-Blade Strangler enters the battlefield, target player becomes the victim. , : Target player loses 2 life. 0/2 The Victim Spells and abilities your opponents play that target you or permanents you control cost less to cast. Creatures attacking you get +1/+0. At the end of combat, a player that was dealt combat damage this combat becomes the victim. {outdated thoughts}I'm not sure that "the quarry" is the right name for it. At first I was thinking "the target", but that's off limits for obvious reasons. I was also thinking "the mark", but then it couldn't use monarch language since you would "get the mark" and not "become the mark". And refernecing "the player with the mark" is more wordy than referencing "the quarry" (e.g. Azure Fleet Admiral's second ability). EDIT: Thanks hydraheadhunter! I like the victim. Hm. That sounds like one could easily misinterpret it.

Vunik the tidal reminder should state in which state the tide starts. Also the whenever means the tide change uses the stack, something you might want to avoid. ( Stifle tide change?) Maybe something like this would do: If there is no tide, it becomes low tide. As a land enters a graveyard for the first time each turn, the tide changes.Lastly, I don't see the flavor in the tide changing because a card enters a graveyard. Some random brainstorming: Since tides are bound to the moon, maybe they should have something to do with lands/basic lands entering/leaving the battlefield/graveyard?

inverness English isn't my native language, but advancing the season "towards summer" sounds to me like you could go different directions in the advancement. I think just advancing it (wothout "towards summer") would suffice. Your card should also state how to enter the seasonal cycle. I assume you meant the card to put the game in summer if there is no season yet. Also would be nice to see a reminder card that tells the current season. Probably via a marker that is moved along it (similar to the sprockets of the contraptions)?

When I was templating the keyword in MSE, I was trying to fit as much information as I could into one sentence. My thought was that it would be implied that if there is no season, it becomes the season that the card cares about. The wording "towards summer" came about because I was trying to boil it all down.
My mechanic would definitely be leaning on a reminder card, like you were saying. I think I'll whip one up. Thank you!

I was going for something like day/night's reminder text, which admittedly isn't the hallmark of mechanical clarity. What you suggested definitely works better.
However, I did think about tying tidal to lands, but ultimately came to the conclusion that that route would lead to lots of traps and bad play patterns where players would mana screw themselves by trying to mill/hold back lands to keep the tide in the state they want (similar to the abandoned Zendikar mechanic that took your land drop in exchange for a lower cost). So I went a little less flavorful, but hopefully ended up with something that wouldn't say "don't play lands" or "throw your lands into the graveyard".

I like this design! I think the only issue is that you need to adjust the wording on your keyword just a bit. Instead of using "as long as you have 8 or more" it should be "if you have 8 or more". This is the wording that Ascend uses.

Sometimes you just want payback on that one card that ruined your nice four hour long game session.... Force of Salt Instant (Silver border) If you've lost the game, you may exile yourself from the game rather than pay this spell’s mana cost. Exile target nonwhite permanent. "It's all because of that cursed card..."

A unified sideboard card. I tried making it not hate on any gameplan too much. The card is meant to played in paper, it is not a digital only card. While the card would be printed at rare in a standard set, it would be reprinted at common in one commander deck to raise the price since it would technically be pauper legal. I am aware that in mtg "instead" does not come after "if you can't," I just think it is more readable and less likely to cause confusion. Submission is all of bellow, and is not a digital only card. Enforce Rule Instant When you cast this spell, exile it and then impose a restriction. If you can't, instead draw a card. The restrictions are: 1 At the beginning of each players upkeep, that player exiles the top card their library. 2 If a land is tapped for two or more mana, it instead adds one mana of a color it could produce. 3 Non basic lands enter the battlefield tapped. 4 Snow lands enter the battlefield tapped. 5 Players can not cast more then 5 spells each turn. 7 Players can not take extra turns. 8 Players can not activate more than 1 planeswalker ability each turn. 9 All spells, permanents and players lose and can not gain protection. You can not impose a restriction that has already been imposed.

spazlazAre life and deathbound only for spells? the way the reminder text is worded it looks like that. If so it could be just a split card or some kind. I know you have more room for text on DFC than spilt cards. But if it was printed you would take the card out of its sleeve many times over a game to turn it.

It's been a while since I designed my last set under another pseudonim back around 2013 when we were in Sourceforge, and my design has evolved quite a bit since that time, but there's been a constant in the way I've experienced MTG: I'm a proud Stax/Control player, and I love seeing my opponent's die inside every time something happens according to plan AND, the fact that people love forcing Bridge from Below into every deck that barely interacts with it's graveyard because of the micro-combo potential, until something terrible happens, or they feed a Tarmogoyf way too much.
As such, I've decided to retroactivelly give a keyword to cards that only interact with the game when they're in the graveyard (Bridge from Below, Anger, Genesis) and make something that would benefit from the new keyword, maybe even messing with the opponent a bit. Harbinger of the Drowned Creature - Horse Horror Sunken — As long as Harbinger of the Drowned is in your graveyard, whenever a card with sunken is put into your graveyard from anywhere, you may fateseal 1.

If it was a creature/enchantment, it would omit the targeting text. It would keep it for enchantments though.
Yes, it would flip a bit. However, if didn't want to flip it that much, you only need to flip it when it is interacted with. Just acknowledge that if a creature died, it is now a sorcery instead.

That's a cool idea, but as it's currently written, sunken is an ability word, and as such, can't be referenced by other cards. It's basically just flavor text that implies a mechanical through-line with other cards. To be able to reference it, you'd at the very least need to make it a keyword of some sort or make it a supertype. The keyword route would probably require adding additional functionality (since players hate marker keywords - just look at devoid).
