Welcome to the Card of the Week Contest! To participate in this Contest you'll have to design a card along the contest guidelines and throw it into the arena with other competitors' entries! At the end of each week, a winner will be determined by forum poll. The winner's card will be rendered and featured on the Welcome page, and the winner decides the challenge for the next week's Contest! Here we go, competitors: our three-hundred and eighty-first challenge! The winner of the "I couldn't think of a name" poll was spazlaz with...And the challenge issued by our winner was... Design a card using the old magic template that uses "old wording". By that, I mean it should explain its function not in the way magic usually formats things nowadays. Examples of this are: Equinox, Marble Priest, Illusionary Mask, and Simulacrum. When you think about how to word your card with the current terminology and it is becoming a mess, you know you have succeeded. To increase your chances of winning and to also make creating the poll easier on whomever is doing so, please try to use a render. Additionally, please try to keep your entry edits all in one post - if you need to change it you can put your old entry in a spoiler marked "Old entry" and leave the newest rendition to be seen. Just use the edit button in the top/right of your original post. And now, time to begin the challenge! Best of luck, competitors!

I am confident of three things;
1. This card would never be printed today. 2. This is totally something that they would have printed years ago. 3. These mechanics don't even work under modern rules.

Whelp I'm out, I hate the old frame and templating with a vibrant, burning passion and it's not worth the effort to try and force my brain to think wrong for a week. If anyone needs me, I shall be in Australia.

Great, I literally started pondering about a planeswalker or fortress entry for this week's challenge an hour ago - and then I saw the SECRET LAIR: Teferi's Time Trouble. Back to the drawing board, I guess...
EDIT: Calling dibs on still potentially pondering about a fortress. While the concept isn't that unique anymore, it's at least still something

I'm going to guess "oldifying" an existing card won't work for this challenge?

@ quazerflame : Please no direct "reprints" as entries, no. Using an existing card as "inspiration" and doing a slightly rebalanced version or similar is completely fine though.
Concerning my own entry, please ignore my previous idea. After WotC doing an oldframe planeswalker, I really don't want to dabble in that design space anymore - so I've though of something new! This entry is supposed to show how complicated wordings can change in both ways - from the simplification of the token creation wording since The Hive on the one hand to Banding being an evergreen without reminder text to its modern mess of a wording on the other hand
Art will be turned into a single gif in the next few days
EDIT: Here we go:

I have to admit, the challenge took me a few days longer than i usually do, normally i find an idea in my head immediately and brute force the rest.

emteedyThat's still a pretty modern way to word it. You really just swapped the order on the abilities, more or less. In old wording, rather than giving an ability with a cost, they would have spelled out how it works.

Camouflage and Ixidron had a child and this is what it looks like: Mist Maze Sorcery Each player turns all cards they have in play face down and shuffles them. They are 2/2 creatures. Players may look at their cards and may pay 1 life during their turn to turn a card face up if it is a creature, artifact, enchantment or land or to exchange one of their face-down cards with the top card of their library. Players may pay llife this way only once per turn. Effects that prevent or redirect damage cannot be used to counter this loss of life. Does anyone know wehre I can find the old Magic title font? Never mind; I remembered that Google was a thing. I tried to turn this into modern wording and failed. I don't even know how to do the paying 1 life thing. Maybe with an emblem it would work; but WotC uses them exclusively on 'walkers.

Oracle text would be something like:
- Destroy target nontoken permanent.
- Put target card in exile into its owner's graveyard.
- Target player discards a card.
- Target player mills the Xth card from their library, where X is any number.
- Put target spell into its owner's graveyard.
- Put target card in the command zone into its owner's graveyard.

spazlaz this should be an interrupt ... I think. I wasn't playing Magic back then. You're correct. Back in the day, anything that could affect a spell as it was being cast was always an interrupt. At least as far as I can remember.

Old cards are my speciality, so I feel it's only fair I offer advice for this one. Orion Rings - Even with old wording, I think that you would need to specify that a card is in Purgatory before you could play them from there, and unless there were going to be a lot of cards that dealt with Purgatory, they'd probably not go that far with the thematic mechanics, and just say that you could summon creatures under the card as though they were in your hand. aquonn - You don't really need to specify that it works in a band. That's just how banding works. In a band, creatures block and are blocked as a group (essentially you declare the entire band as one attacker/blocker), but don't share abilities. The only time you would need to specify is if you had some kind of "Schrödinger's Banding" where a creature would act as though it were not part of the band in certain circumstances. For example, let's suppose I made a creature... {Example 1 (Not an entry)} This would work fine as is, as a creature that flies and bands, and deals damage first, before creatures without first strike. Let's say I wanted to reinforce the "harbinger" theme, though. I want to make the theme a crow that will fly ahead of the band, but is still a part of the group. So I decide that if anything blocks and can't catch the bird, it just flies on without the group. In classic Magic tradition, though, I might want to specify that (a) the creature doesn't stop being a part of the band, and (b) that it's doing its normal combat damage, and not effect damage, in case the timing matters. So I might write it something like this; {Example 2 (Not an entry)} In this case, I do specify (though I might not strictly need to even then), because its abilities are an exception to the way banding normally works. This is Magic written as though the game were brand new, and there's few hard rules for how things work. So I assume that I'll need to tell players that dealing damage separately doesn't mean not being banded, and that assigning damage to a different target is still combat damage, and still assigned when it would normally be.

I feel like to truly capture the old card experience, we have to go way back. Not sure this actually works. Don't you choose bands first, and then block? kefke, you mentioned "Schrödinger's Banding", "Bands with blockers" seems similarly paradoxical, in that the order of the timing of banding and blocking are erroneously reversed.

Since WotC helpfully posted a complete transcript of the old rule book back in 2004 [1], I'll quote directly from there. As you can see, banding works a little differently with defending than it does attacking. You only have to choose to create a band when you attack. With blocking, so long as any creature assigned to block the attacking creature has banding, you get the effect. Legends introduced "Bands with" abilities that specify which creatures specifically banding applies to, so there's precedent for that as well. Oracle text shows that modern rulings completely butcher how banding was supposed to work, but do support specified banding working while defending. So there's no reason that "Bands with blockers" wouldn't work as intended, allowing the player to benefit from banding while blocking, and at no other time.

Had a rough time with this challenge, I don't really like old magic cards much. Figured I'd just keep it simple and make an underpowered rare that feels overpowered for the time it'd be designed for.

Hey all, first time posting here. I was already playing around with old-frame stuff because of Teferi's Time Trouble, then I discovered this competition. Perfect timing! Attachment DeletedMaybe kind of OP, but I imagine it in a Wasteland meta. I like this card because it's simple but rich with ambiguity. Should your lands become 0/0 indestructible creatures? Can they be removed from combat? Should they just remove a creature from combat? If so, should they target? {Oracle attempt}T: add colorless. Each land you control gains: "Prevent all combat damage that an opponent's creature would deal this turn. Activate this ability only once per turn, and only if that creature is of a color of mana this land could produce." The art piece is actually called Mystic Swamp Ruins. Not to be confused with Mystic Marsh.

warmCabin - It'd probably be something like: Lands you control have, "Target creature that shares any part of its color identity with this card becomes blocked. Activate this ability only once per turn."
