Welcome to the Card of the Week Contest! To participate in this Contest you'll have to design a card along the contest guidelines and throw it into the arena with other competitors' entries! At the end of each week, a winner will be determined by forum poll. The winner's card will be rendered and featured on the Welcome page, and the winner decides the challenge for the next week's Contest! Here we go, competitors: our three-hundred and seventy-forth challenge! The winner of the "The end is nigh!" poll was aquonn with...And the challenge issued by our winner was... With the printing of a lot of Tron hate in MH2, it got me thinking about the design space of hate cards. So, design a hate card, or a piece of sideboard tech for any archetype or format. To increase your chances of winning and to also make creating the poll easier on whomever is doing so, please try to use a render. Additionally, please try to keep your entry edits all in one post - if you need to change it you can put your old entry in a spoiler marked "Old entry" and leave the newest rendition to be seen. Just use the edit button in the top/right of your original post. And now, time to begin the challenge! Best of luck, competitors!

I really like tap-down effects, but I don't feel many of them are viable. Originally this was just a tap-effect version of Force of Will, but that seemed both not strong enough and too boring. Stapling the effect onto a decent hoser I feel has made the effect a lot more interesting.

Hate Bear time? Hate Bear time. Contumacious Skeptic Creature - Human Advisor Protection from enchantments and from enchanted permanents. Whenever Contumacious Skeptic deals combat damage to a player, it deals damage to them equal to the number of enchantments they control.
Well isn't he a cantankerous old git? The one guy on Theros who's completely over this whole "Gods" business. Don't seem to be worth the trouble, frankly. And yes, that is some classical art of Diogenes. I should look up century-old stuff more often: At least that's usually credited somewhere.

If there's one thing I hate, it's getting wrecked by discard. Leyline of Sanctity is one of my favorite cards of all time, so here's a tribute to it.
I tried to fix some of the problems with Leyline, especially the issue with it being a horrible card to draw after you've started the game.

Lesser Hellion Creature - Hellion This spell can't be countered. , Sacrifice ~: Destroy target snow permanent. 2/2 Helps against decks that rely almost exclusively on countering in pauper and deters people needlessly using snow basic lands, plus it works as snow hate in case that ever gets out of control.

the5lacker: Reminds me of Dorfl. Btw, The Ceramic Atheists is a great name for an Agnostic Metal band.
The Harlequin: You might wanna change "creatures" to "permanents". I'd love to add this to my all-Sliver block, if I may.
bazzboda: With the banning of Arcum's Astrolabe, your card's job has already been done, son.
Gee, I have sooo many anti-Control cards, it's hard to choose just one. I'll go with this one:
Burning Grudge Enchantment This spell can’t be countered if you control no permanents named Burning Grudge. Whenever a spell you control is countered by a spell or ability an opponent controls, that spell you control deals damage equal to its mana value to that opponent or target permanent that opponent controls.

sdfkjghUse it if you want :-) Main reason for the creature tag: Only living beings can decay and rot away. And non-creature Slivers are so few and between that that is neglectable IMO.

No, srsly, EVERYTHING in Hive block is Slivers. Sliver Basic lands. Tribal. Thriving Hive (a threshold-type mechanic that works off of how many Slivers you control). EV.RY.THING!

No idea whether or not wishes deserve a hate card, but I really liked this design.
End of Dreams Enchantment Whenever a player puts a card into their hand or onto the battlefield from outside the game, that player loses 2 life. Whenever a player plays a card from outside the game, that player loses 2 life. Ward - Pay 3 life (Whenever this permanent becomes the target of a spell or ability an opponent controls, counter it unless that player pays 3 life.)

I'm not really good with archetypes directly, so I decided to go with a normal color hoser instead.

So, I'm not sure if this counts, but if it doesn't, let me know. {Design notes}This is kind of a multipurpose hoser depending on how you use it. You can use it on your own creature to make it immune to some of the harder-to-deal-with form of removal. Or you can use it on an opponent's creature to prevent flicker-type strategies. Original version did not include the phasing out hate, but then I remembered that Wizards has started using it more and more frequently in the last year or so. Feedback is always appreciated, especially with costing!

Way of the People (2)(G)(G) Enchantment (Mythic) When Way of the People enters the battlefield, unoccupy Territories from the creatures occupying them. Creatures can’t occupy territories. At the beginning of each player’s upkeep, they may choose a target creature. That creature gains the effect as though it were occupying up to as many target territories that players control until end of turn. So this is actually a hate card for my own set, which uses territories, I'll post a couple of examples just so you can see how they work:

"Enchanted creature can't leave the battlefield or phase out." ??

A Dwarf Fortress-flavored hate card against elves creatures with forestwalk weeneies, with a side of ramp. The second ability is like a balanced version of Orcish Lumberjack, I guess.

I think you can also do something like Xenagos Ascended, but that doesn't cover phasing. "Enchanted creature can't leave the battlefield or phase out." ?? Wouldn't that text also mean it can't go to the graveyard, thus making the creature virtually indestructible?

Well, when you think about it, a lot of the cards since this date have gone on to define entirely new decks... Opposer of Fire Creature - Human Cleric (Silver Border)Protection from cards released after May 2, 2019 (This creature can’t be blocked, targeted, dealt damage, enchanted, or equipped by anything released during or after War of the Spark.)3/1

Gonna slide up in here right before time is called. {Card Text} Alis, Battle Maiden Legendary Creature - Human Flagbearer While an opponent is choosing targets as part of casting a spell they control or activating an ability they control, that player must choose at least one Flagbearer on the battlefield if able. If a counter would be put on a permanent your opponents control, put that counter on Alis, Battle Maiden instead. 2 / 2
