Welcome to the Card of the Week Contest! To participate in this Contest you'll have to design a card along the contest guidelines and throw it into the arena with other competitors' entries! At the end of each week, a winner will be determined by forum poll. The winner's card will be rendered and featured on the Welcome page, and the winner decides the challenge for the next week's Contest! Here we go, competitors: our three-hundred and forty-eighth challenge! The winner of the "Snowblind" poll was aquonn with...And the challenge issued by our winner was... A lot of old cards have cool ideas and mechanics, but fell into camps of being too complicated, not translating into modern rules, being over/underpowered, etc. Design a card inspired by the design of an old card (pre-8th Edition) for example, how Master of the Pearl Trident can be considered an updated version of Lord of Atlantis. Remember to note the name of the card used as inspiration when you post. To increase your chances of winning and to also make creating the poll easier on whomever is doing so, please try to use a render. Additionally, please try to keep your entry edits all in one post - if you need to change it you can put your old entry in a spoiler marked "Old entry" and leave the newest rendition to be seen. Just use the edit button in the top/right of your original post. And now, time to begin the challenge! Best of luck, competitors!

After using the random search function to determine last week's entry, why stop now? After getting three random pre-8th Edition cards that were pretty much fine even for modern standards, I hit Nettling Imp. Guess I'll work with that So what did I change? - Obvious change from „non-Wall“ to „without defender“ is obvious.
- The ability text is really convoluted – and the oracle wording is even worse to prevent the silly Imp from wrecking havoc in multiplayer games. Transforming the ablity into an upkeep trigger cleans it up nicely. Since this buffs the Imps powerlevel in multiplayer games however, I decided to bump the rarity to rare.
- Forcing attacks is an ability nowadays seen in red or blue. Fitting normal Imp colors, I decided on using red as addition to the original black color.
- Also while we're talking about Imps (as well as the original artwork!): We definitely need to grant the Imp flying, seriously.
- And finally I decided to buff the stats a little bit since nowadays creatures are allowed to be good.

Decided to update anvil of bogardan, even though it's still played in some specific decks in EDH, i thought i'd make it more of a generalised symmetrical effect that would see play in more varied decks.

Arena is one of my favorite utility lands conceptually, and for nostalgia purposes. I've always wanted to see it brought up to modern standards, so here's my crack.

dromar's charm is cool, but it doesn't synergize with eldrazi processors. i fixed this glaring issue and now the card is playable featuring: two modes that are generally good, and one fringe mode for when you really need to power up your blight herder (or upset a reanimator player)

I think it wants to be a red equipment, but still usable on "target creature"

Now we have 'mana tokens', its time to update a very wordy personal commander staple. Bumped the cost a little to keep the balance as we can now build up a much larger hoard of treasure. {Text} Hidden Stash Artifact , : Create a treasure token. “They say there’s gold to spare, decking Orazca’s halls. But who knows what greater treasures lie, hid by those who passed before.” — Captain Sunlockes

I actually have a two-fer: Ashnod's Battle Gear would totally be an equipment if it existed now. However, one can't think of her Altar when she's mentioned. So my mind put the two together in a surprisingly lore friendly way. Urza's Battle Gear Artifact- Equipment Equipped creature gets +2/+2 and "Sacrifice this creature: Add ." Equip Ashnod's schematics. Urza's designs.I may be slightly undercosting it, but for 3 mana you can get the altar itself, so I dunno. I could be talked into it, though.

Advanced Tactics Instant Cast this spell only during your declare attackers step. Exile any number of attacking creatures you control in a face down pile, shuffle that pile, then manifest those cards tapped and attacking. Turn them face up at the beginning of the declare blockers step. This is a Camouflage using manifest to imitate what the original card text was describing more closely than the actual oracle text. I also made it optional to leave creatures face up so you can keep counters, auras, equipment, etc. I also made it red, because I think it fits there better being a combat chaos effect. Not sure if this wouldn't be more balanced at .

New version of Chains of Mephistopheles EDIT: Changed my entry: I think nowadays an effect like this is put on a creature instead of an enchantment.

Hmm. I think we've just stumbled onto an optical illusion. The + makes its 2 look bigger than the -'s 2.
I would like to ask the committee for a special dispensation. Almost three years ago, I filled out the cycle for Gauntlet of Might. I ask that all the non- Gauntlets in that design be allowed to be entered as the same submission.
Gauntlet of Ambition Artifact Black creatures get +1/+1. Whenever a Swamp is tapped for mana, its controller adds (in addition to the mana the land produces).
Gauntlet of Martials Artifact Black creatures get +1/+1. Whenever a Plains is tapped for mana, its controller adds (in addition to the mana the land produces).
Gauntlet of Predation Artifact Green creatures get +1/+1. Whenever a Forest is tapped for mana, its controller adds (in addition to the mana the land produces).
Gauntlet of the Mind Artifact Blue creatures get +1/+1. Whenever an Islanis tapped for mana, its controller adds (in addition to the mana the land produces).

Not having knowledge about older cards as I started playing at around OG Ravnica, I used the random card feature and wound up with Frankenstein's Monster. Seems the "update" is pretty clear... Sidisi's Masterpiece Creature — Zombie Delve Menace When ~ enters the battlefield, put a +1/+1 counter on it for each creature card exiled with its delve ability. 4/4

I couldn't pick a card, so I used the random card button until I got Reverent Mantra and made a smaller version based on the Forces from Modern Horizons.

(I messed up the code somehow, but sdfkgh noted that Ashnod's Battle Gear gave +2/-2, not +2/+2) There are exactly 2 equipment that give a penalty to toughness: Skullclamp and Barbed Battlegear. Both them give its creature +N/-1, and Skullclamp was famously not playtested with that penalty. I figured it was best to err on the side of caution, and it felt more thematic to be +2/+2.

Since Oubliette got an update, why not do Tawnos's Coffin?
Paying is a special action, similar to the Licids.

melono: Why not use the newer template? When Blighted to Nowhere enters the battlefield, exile target land until Blighted to Nowhere leaves the battlefield. galva94: Not that I mind much, but that's the art of Victimize.

It always irked me how Sylvan Library worked, but I love the card! So here's my fixed version of Sylvan Library.
The problem with Sylvan Library was that you had to keep track of which cards you had drawn this turn, and it was a pain in the butt. This version doesn't have that problem. Also, I reduced the number of cards drawn each turn so that it wouldn't be quite as oppressive in terms of card selection. Finally, I moved the life-paying part to a separate ability, and added black to the mana cost. This, I think, works a bit better with the color pie, and having it as a separate ability allows the card to maintain the original flavor of paying life for cards without the headache.

Used a random(year<=2002) link until I got something I liked. Landed on Rats' Feast. | Banquet for Rats X, X, and a Black Sorcery Uncommon
Delve. Exile up to X target cards from among all graveyards, then create a 2/2 black rat creature token for each card exiled this way. FT: They feast on flesh. They feast on bone. And gathered in great numbers, they feast on the living. Art by:KxG-WitcheR |

Not a bit like Aleatory!* Get outta here with your actual good cards!
*I wanted to link to the scene in Help! where the Inspector touts his mimicry skills, and George snarks off on him, but youtube doesn't have it.
