Welcome to the Card of the Week Contest! To participate in this Contest you'll have to design a card along the contest guidelines and throw it into the arena with other competitors' entries! At the end of each week, a winner will be determined by forum poll. The winner's card will be rendered and featured on the Welcome page, and the winner decides the challenge for the next week's Contest! Here we go, competitors: our three-hundred and forty-second challenge! The winners of the "Crossover!!" poll were Aarhg (top left), aquonn (top right) and quazerflame (bottom) with...And the challenge issued by one of our winners was... Design a legendary noncreature card with Companion. (If this card is your chosen companion, you may put it into your hand from outside the game for any time you could cast a sorcery.) To increase your chances of winning and to also make creating the poll easier on whomever is doing so, please try to use a render. Additionally, please try to keep your entry edits all in one post - if you need to change it you can put your old entry in a spoiler marked "Old entry" and leave the newest rendition to be seen. Just use the edit button in the top/right of your original post. And now, time to begin the challenge! Best of luck, competitors!

My first idea was to simply change my companion to a planeswalker - so here you go:

Even though it takes up quite a bit of space in the text box, I feel like the companion reminder text is too important to leave out - especially after the rules change the mechanic went through.
The companion requirement is pretty tough on this card, but it's meant for EDH, where you always have your commander available.
Edit: I made the card a little cheaper and a little stronger, becuase upon reflection, it seemed underpowered. Bumped up to mythic as well.

Prodigy's Lightning-Fist Legendary Instant Companion — Each permanent card in your starting deck has power 1 or less. ~ deals 3 damage to any target. Narset's first use of Jeskai technique quickly threw Taigam off his footing.Basically you get to keep things like Monastery Swiftspear and Thing in the Ice but lose out on certain other cards typical bolt decks would want like Bloodbraid Elf, Arclight Phoenix, or Eidolon of the Great Revel if you want to use this as a guaranteed Bolt draw. Otherwise, works as a perfectly serviceable bolts 4-8 assuming you've got the right PW or creature to back it up. Incidentally, when paired with Narset, Enlightened Master, Narset Transcendent, Narset of the Ancient Way, or even Narset's Reversal, you can kill Taigam, Sidisi's Hand / Taigam, Ojutai Master with this.

ZephyrPhantom - I wondered why you said "permanent cards" instead of "creature cards", then I remembered Vehicles. Nice catch. sade612 - Ooo, this is a brilliant idea even without the Companion ability. viriss - You probably want to change "rare and mythic rare" to "rare or mythic rare", otherwise you can't include any nonland cards. XD Aarhg - This card also does well with creature token creators as a "oh crap I lost my commander" option.

Vesuva's Pride Legendary Tribal Enchantment Artifact--Shapeshifter Companion—Each nonland permanent card in your starting deck can enter the battlefield as a copy of another permanent. Flash Changeling (This card is every creature type at all times.)
If a permanent you control would enter the battlefield as a copy of another permanent on the battlefield, you may have it enter the battlefield as a copy of another non-Eldrazi permanent of that same type instead.
"How does this work" I hear you ask? Well, instead of copying something on the battlefield, you can copy anything in existence (except Eldrazis, because Spikes and munchkins always gotta ruin everything), so long as it's of the same type as the thing on the battlefield you would've copied without Vesuva's Pride.
For example: Vesuva now essentially reads "You may have Vesuva enter the battlefield tapped as a copy of any non-Eldrazi land."
EDIT: Thanks, Daij_Djan .

Companion—Each nonland permanent card in your starting deck can enter the battlefield as a copy of another permanent. Flash Changeling (This card is every creature type at all times.) If a permanent would enter the battlefield under your control as a copy of another permanent, you may name a non-Eldrazi card that shares a card type with that other permanent and have your permanent enter the battlefield as a copy of the named card instead.
emteedy : That won't actually work the way you think it does, as Dark Depths expressly states that it enters the battlefield with its ice counters on it, and since Vesuva is entering as Dark Depths, Vesuva Depths (now there's a great name for a card) will enter with those ice counters on it.

The problem i see with Vesuva's pride is that Vesuva can now just enter as Dark depths and instantly summon Marit Lage?

@ sdfkjgh: That wording doesn't work. "A permanent" by default only refers to cards on the battlefield, otherwise it'd be "permanent cards". You cannot refer to just any "permanent card" either, you need to refer it by name. My suggestion would be:
"If a permanent would enter the battlefield under your control as a copy of another permanent, you may name a non-Eldrazi card that shares a card type with that and have the permanent enter the battlfield as a copy of the named card instead."
No need to refer to "name a permanent card" as sharing the card type will already take care of that part. Wording still feels rather clunky though.

Here my entry!

Post by quazerflame on Nov 19, 2020 0:54:23 GMT
Well, this was more difficult than I thought it'd be! Finally have an entry for my own challenge, though! Our current demon planeswalker is a human-turned-demon. I wanted to think of what might cause a demon to become a planeswalker without natively having its own spark, and then the idea of demon contracts came to mind. The Dealer was a demon that was powerful enough to make a deal with a planeswalker for their spark. The Dealer's new spark is unusual, though, in that it's a separate object from him, allowing him to "give" it to other planeswalkers and planeswalk directly to them at a later time. As for the abilities, I wanted The Dealer to get stronger the more harm that is done to you, hence his two nonloyalty abilities. His first loyalty ability allows you to make a contract with another demon, and the life you lose in the process makes him more powerful. Finally, his ultimate gives you a bizarre win condition where you want to get down to exactly 0 life. (Though maybe it's a victory condition for The Dealer. You read the fine print, yes?) As for the front face, The Dealer isn't interested in just answering you summons. He wants you to make a deal, and what better way to seal a deal than a contract signed in blood? (Or life, as it were.) If I could ask for your thoughts on my entry? I kinda want to make a custom set and wonder how he'd do in one.

If I could ask for your thoughts on my entry? I kinda want to make a custom set and wonder how he'd do in one. Pretty awesome concept you've come up with here. The idea of the actual spark is quite clever, as is the deal with the devil! I'd say the end result feels a bit too restrained however, especially given the subject matter. My first thought was this was balanced for Commander, where players have far more than 20 life to lose. As it stands now, I think you'd be hard pressed to activate the ultimate in any sort of 20-life game. Even if you do, there is a lot of work you have to do to make sure the damage is exactsies. I'd say it's more or less impossible to do outside of a dedicated lifegain deck, which might be hard to make with demons, devils, and imps. Consider also the hoops you need to jump through just to get demon boy out: pay to add it to hand, then pay to cast it, then pay another plus some amount of life. I would want to make sure the resulting demon-walker is absolutely kick-ass. Granted, companion is a powerful rider. But to get any value out of it at all, this dude requires that you haven't run out of creature cards, since it has no card draw. Getting to Bolas's Citadel cards from hand is cool--I like it and it feels very flavor-appropriate. But the ultimate feels weak and underwhelming in comparison. Another metric of PWs, I often find, is how well they can protect themselves. This fella can't do anything on his own--you need to have the creature cards in hand first. But all that said, like I opened with, this is a very very cool design. I would be inclined to focus the deal with the devil part to the transformation, as tying both sides to life loss has a sort of knock-on effect where people can just ult immediately if they've gained any life and haven't been dealt any damage. I'd say flipping this dude is where the deal happens. After that, what's the deal you made? Just a few brainstorming ideas from a guy up way past his bedtime: Maybe you get something like Lich's Mastery, where you can't lose? Maybe it enters with all those loyalty counters from the life, and then whenever you're dealt damage, you remove that many (or just one?) counters from the PW... Maybe he can summon you a demon army, maybe you can Experimental Frenzy out your deck, or maybe he curses your opponent in some way, like a ability that makes them sac a permanent whenever another permanent ETBs until your next turn. I liked your idea about making the demon stronger as he leeches your soul away, and I think you could still incorporate that in some way. I think however you'll need to consider the math on the rear abilities pretty closely if you do so. Last thought: Bonus points if you add flavor text that mentions Georgia and/or fiddling.

melono To be honest, I'm a little surprised there aren't more sword or weapon entries, since they can be made to fit the companion flavor pretty well.
It's crazy how similar our ideas were, but the cards can still play very differently.

quazerflame , while the basic supertype does not work this way in real Magic the Gathering because of Snow Basic Lands and Wastes, what I am doing would be like if I made a planeswalker card with haste and the reminder text "Planeswalkers with haste may activate loyality abilities the turn they enter play" in addition to my card I would also be making a modification to magic's rules as my card submission. This has been done in the Card of the Week Challenge a few times before but I don't think its ever been officially decided if its allowed or not. Regardless my card is kind of a joke since it lets any deck not using a real Companion essentially ban Planeswalkers from every format, which I would be happy about but I am sure many would not be. The way I defined the basic rule does mean that this could be played in Pauper in case Wizards ever prints common Planeswalkers. I think if we are going to continue this conversation any further it would be best through the PM system.

vstrange: There's some cleaner templating that you could do:
For each color, create a 1/1 Elemental creature token of that color.
Also, is that bottom text supposed to be flavor text? Because if so, it should be italicized. I don't know if you know this, but when you're making a card in MSE, if you hit the down arrow while you're in the text box, your cursor will be taken to the flavor text field, which is pre-italicized for your convenience.

{Text Version}The Darksteel Infection {3} Legendary Artifact Companion — Your starting deck contains no creature cards. (If this card is your chosen companion, you may put it into your hand from outside the game for 3 any time you could cast a sorcery.) Indestructible Equipment you control have living weapon.
emteedy I like this deckbuilding restriction. Doesn't seem like much at first, but doesn't let you have any backup copies in your main, gives you effectively 3 sideboard cards, and makes you pick between 20 and 24 lands. The effect is definitely powerful, but on a 5-mana 3-color do-nothing enchantment, it might be closer to balanced than a first brush might imply. sade612 This might benefit from a Stonework Packbeast-style Characteristic-defining ability. Not sure this card is worth it with updated companion rules, a lot of the benefit of having land types over tapping for any color is the fetchability. sdfkjgh I kinda like this, even if I find it goofy, it reminds me of Mental Magic. Hate the weird mana cost, requiring colorless is very Eldrazi but this is specifically not that, and the hybrids are kinda bleh too. On the topic of the Eldrazi restriction, there are very many cards that are equal (if not greater) power to an Eldrazi, so this doesn't seem to prevent what you want to avoid, also worth noting that this means you cant name any other Changeling cards either, which is a weird flavor nonbo. spazlaz of course in tournament play this means sideboard, but I like the idea that in order to play this card your whole collection needs to be in a swiss bank account under the name of a shell company. Also worth noting this is very powerful when not a companion. SilentKobold I like this, but I'd like it a lot more if it gave some sort of thematic keyword or something to feel better to play. (also super nitpicky but the name doesn't really fit an equipment)
