Welcome to the Card of the Week Contest! To participate in this Contest you'll have to design a card along the contest guidelines and throw it into the arena with other competitors' entries! At the end of each week, a winner will be determined by forum poll. The winner's card will be rendered and featured on the Welcome page, and the winner decides the challenge for the next week's Contest! Here we go, competitors: our three-hundred and thirty-ninth challenge! The winner of the "The Good Old Days" poll was myself with...And the challenge issued by our winner was... Two years ago, WotC released a set specifically catering towards the Chinese market, and currently there's talk about them finally maybe returning to Kamigawa. So with this in mind, your new challenge is: Design a card that is Asian-themed, based on Asian mythology, or similar! It may be Chinese, Japanese, Korean, or whatever. Please no Anime-based stuff or similar though as that one was done just recently To increase your chances of winning and to also make creating the poll easier on whomever is doing so, please try to use a render. Additionally, please try to keep your entry edits all in one post - if you need to change it you can put your old entry in a spoiler marked "Old entry" and leave the newest rendition to be seen. Just use the edit button in the top/right of your original post. And now, time to begin the challenge! Best of luck, competitors!

Attachment DeletedThe art is actually of a Sōgenbi, but since I couldn't find any art of a Tsurube Otoshi in the air it was the best option at the time. Tsurube Otoshi are a Yōkai that are giant heads that hang out in trees and crush people.

I played a bit of Nioh a couple of years ago, and that game had some great yokai enemy designs. Never finished it, and I haven't played it recently, but I remember wheel monks (also known as "wanyudo") being pretty rad, but a pain in the ass to fight. They're a kind of manifestation of pure rage, and they roll around setting things on fire and yanking people's souls out of their bodies.

Had an absolute blast working on this one. Did my best to depict what is probably my favorite moment in history: the time c.1403-06 when emissaries from backwater Castile were seated higher in the court of Timur than delegates from the Chinese Empire, just because Timur wanted to stick it to his rival empire on the other side of the Himalayas. Makes for a great story, but also demonstrates how Samarkand was the hub of Eurasia at the time; here you have diplomats all the way from Iberia and East Asia sitting in the same chamber in the capital of the Silk Road. You can find a little more here on Wikipedia, if you're interested.

Overworked Laborer Creature - Human Citizen ~ gets -1/-1 for each card in your hand. 3/3 The rising of the moon is merely a signal to work harder.References Japan's karoshi phenomenon and the general pressure of overwork in Asian workplaces. Interestingly enough we've always seen this drawback on larger creatures like Grim Strider and Nyxathid but there's never been an aggressively costed intended for older formats type weenie made in this vein.

Daij_Djan: You missed the perfect opportunity for a musical reference.
Since I'm one of the few people who actually watched Constantine, I'm trying to come up with an ability suite to faithfully match the Kuchisake-onna, but I can't quite think of anything. Can anybody help me out?

sdfkjgh Maybe it could start off with an amount of -1/-1 counters on it, and then somehow give those counters away to other creatures?

sdfkjgh I like the idea of -1/-1 counters, but this also reads like it could make for a good 2-3 phase saga. E.g. "Curse of the Kuchisake-onna" that walks your opponent through the steps...

Finished Lovecraft Country and found inspiration from that, though this card isn't as close as I'd like.

Tried to do a card inspired by the Banzai Charge. Not sure on how it'll go.

Orion Rings wow, that's a fantastic design! Seems pretty strong for the cost, but idk if that matters too much, haha. Elegant. P.S. gotta say, 15 years later the wording of haunt still reads confusingly on first pass. I feel like "haunted by" would've been a better structure for Wizards to have used.

@ Orion Rings: Always glad to see Haunt getting some love
Concerning my own entry, it's actually been quite some time since I last followed my own mantra - and we don't have a Samurai-themed entry yet either - so here we go!

Daij_Djan - I like honor. There's some good potential there for neat things. Is this the first time you've used it?

@ atta_turk: Glad you like Honor. It's not the first time I've used it (in fact, it's in one of the two sets I'm currently working on), but it might indeed be the first time I've posted a card featuring it on the forum.

Directly from Wiki: "Shui gui (Chinese: 水鬼; pinyin: shuǐ guǐ; lit.: 'water ghost') are the spirits of people who drowned. They lurk in the place where they died, drag unsuspecting victims underwater, and drown them to take possession of their bodies. This process is known as ti shen (Chinese: 替身; pinyin: tì shēn; lit.: 'replace the body'), in which the spirit returns to life in the victim's body while the victim's spirit takes the shui gui's place and constantly seeks to take control of another living person's body."

See, I would've gone with this old thing, but perhaps you didn't because you were unaware of its existence.

Oh I know of these poor souls, but because the Shuigui kills via drowning I used this new card as a reference.
