Hi everybody! I am looking for some feedback on two mechancis for a set I am working on, which would ideally be aimed at Custom Standard.
The set itself is a bottom-up design, with limited play in mind. It encourages two-color or one-color drafting, and has three mechanics:
- Adamant (from Throne of Eldraine). Primary in , secondary in
- Revere. In
- Pilfer. In
Green itself encourages mono-color more and has a legendaries/sagas matter them. Instead, the other two "lore" factions (WU and BR) each have their own mechanics. Those are the ones I am looking for feedback for.
The WU faction has a go-wide, spirit tribal theme. The BR faction has an aggro/discard theme.
Revere [cost] - You may pay [cost] instead of paying this cards's mana cost. If you do, it becomes revered as it enters the battlefield
Examples:
Honorbound Knight
Creature - Human Knight
Revere
When ~ enters the battlefield, if it is revered, you may tap target permanent you don't control.

This spell costs less to cast if you control a revered creature.
Draw two cards.
Why I think it works: Rever works similar to kicker, in that you can pay an additional cost to get an additional effect. Kicker is one of the most versatile and fun mechanics in Magic. It also has good design space, as it synergizes with other cards.
Why I think it does not work: Revere does nothing by itself and might be a nuisance to keep track of. Maybe Kicker would just be better. In addition, the revered status doesn't transfer through flicker effects, which are traditionally an Azorius thing. Contrary to Renown, it is impossible to give crearures the revered status later (except for one Mythic Rare planeswalker in the set).
Pilfer - Whenever this creature deals combat damage to a player, that player discards a card from their hand into exile. Players may pay at any time to return all pilfered cards they own to their hand.
Example:
Adler's Auxiliaries
Creature - Rogue
Haste
Pilfer
1/1
Why I think it works: In an aggro themed color pair, Pilfer works wonders against slower, reactive decks. It especially shuts down counterspell and flash decks, since the opponent may have to waste 1 mana after their upkeep to return pilfered cards to their hand. Pilfer loses usefulness as the game goes on and mana is more plentiful, thereby reinforcing the agrgessive nature of the color pair. Plus, it adds a tactical element to the game, in that you can decide to wait longer and spend only 1 mana to return a large amount of cards to your hand, or you can pay the cost every turn and nullify the card disadvantage effect altogether.
Why I think it does not work: Pilfer can be annoying. Imagine having to discard 3-4 cards each turn and having to pay mana to return them. On the other hand, it is largely useless against some types of decks that have access to easy card draw, or can stall the game long enough to return cards to their hadn with ease.
