As I've mentioned in another thread, a group of friends and I are making a vanilla-ish core set loosely based around A/B/U. One of the cards we've been putting off reworking is Illusionary Mask. This is what someone came up with: Obscuring Mask Artifact , : Cast a creature card from your hand face down as a 2/2 creature rather than pay its mana cost. Activate this ability only any time you could cast a sorcery. As long as you control Obscuring Mask, you may turn creature cards cast with it face up at any time by paying their mana costs reduced by up to . That first line just seems wrong. Putting aside timing rules while abilities are resolving, this looks almost like the artifact is casting the creature? What a mess. I had an idea that's more in line with way madness was changed, but it warps the card's effect and changes it into a potential discard outlet. , : Discard a creature card into exile, then you may pay . If you do, cast that card face down as a 2/2 creature. Otherwise, put it into your graveyard. Activate this ability only any time you could cast a sorcery. As long as you control Obscuring Mask, you may turn face down cards cast this way face up at any time by paying their mana costs reduced by up to . It's kind of...wordy, but it seems more mechanically sound. Can the hivemind offer any advice?

Yeah, that is a tough one.. Personally I think Scroll of Fate is the closest to a fixed Illusionary Mask. If you want to keep using a cost for the activated ability and then add cost reduction, it could be combined with a Qarsi Deceiver-like wording as well.
EDIT: Just remembered this was supposed to be used for a CoreSet, so using the Manifest mechanic itself is pretty much out of question.. Technically there would be the option to spell it out?

Now we're leaning towards this: : Until end of turn, you may cast a creature card in your hand face down as a 2/2 creature for . (Timing rules still apply.)As long as you control Obscuring Mask, you may turn face down cards cast this way face up at any time by paying their mana costs reduced by up to .
