Card of the Week Contest #321: That's My Type

I made a new type of conspiracy/vanguard.



I initially conceptualized the type as a sort of sorcery called an ultimatum, functioning similarly to Curse of the Cabal where your opponent could perform some feat to interact with the spell and prevent its completion. I wanted to do something that was like a planeswalker, but a little different, and I probably could have made a subtype of enchantments to the same effect.

I was worried that waiting on the ability would force cards to be designed into a tough spot, as suspend was when it often amounted to a dead draw late game. I was also concerned that a new battlefield type would be difficult to find a space for in the color pie, and could have an extremely high overlap with another type with few benefits other than a lack of available countermeasures. I also really don't want Tarmogoyf to be good, so I settled on a type that existed outside of the battlefield, thereby allowing access to its abilities immediately.

I realized that there was no downside for running a card that you didn't have to pay mana to get a benefit from in any deck. I was also a little worried that if players drafted several strong plots, they might run each of them. I figured that the cards were going to have to be pretty slow since they started immediately, and I was felt that if I had to balance the power of stacked effects against other cards in the set, it would make plots unplayable. For a minute or two I decided Legendary Conspiracy was the way to go, but then I figured that if I was going to have to redefine what Legendary meant for a conspiracy, I might as well just make a new type that could have whatever traits I wanted, including mutual exclusivity. What I ended up with was something close to a vanguard, but weaker, and thereby possibly better suited for draft play where we couldn't confirm that every player would have a plot.

Plots don't necessarily have these features, but I decided that there should be deck construction modifiers like Sovereign's Realm or the companion cards from the last set. I also chose to use the p/t box to store the number of time counters it started with. (Plots without timers do not have the suspend-ish triggered abilities.) I decided that the cleanest way to demarcate the late-game switch was with a transform. (One benefit of being in your sideboard is that you can put a clear sleeve or no sleeve on your plot. (Technically, transform also only applies to permanents per 711.5, so it might be better to come up with a different word to describe the flipping over later.)) This allows you to create a clean-looking triggered ability when the timer runs out (not depicted above) and alter the static abilities from the front without too much text on a card.

Finally, I want to give a shoutout to u/figma_andrew on reddit for a precursor to this concept with draft stipulation cards.

Hey, I made some basic creatures a few years ago! Glad I'm not the only one to have that idea 

Anyway, here's mine:

Treaties are similar to World Enchantments in that there can only be one out at a time. However, you can leave a Treaty at any time (ignore its effects) by paying a cost stated on the card (in this case, losing creatures and life). If everyone has left the treaty, its controller sacrifices it.
I won't lie, this card took three people to create  But I think it turned out well!

Traits begin the game in your sideboard and are revealed when the game begins. They modify the way you start the game and others have persisting effects that behave similar to quests from Zendikar. Traits are not permanents and are moved from the sideboard to the command zone when they are revealed. Thus becoming a part of the game.

kebelqwa I quite like this design!  It's a fun concept for multiplayer formats.  I'd be curious to see more of what these could do.

It looks like the reminder text could use a bit of a rewrite for clarity, syntax, and the fact that it does nothing beyond you making the choice of graveyards.

Here is my new card supertype, Mythic.



Mythic cards represent the creatures and spells of legend, unable to be harmed by mortal interference. Examples of this could include everything from the One Ring (LOTR), to a new cycle of MTG gods, or heroes that have reached strengths unknown even to the planeswalkers.
Mythic is a supertype that can be added to any card. Mythic cards can't be targeted, damaged, or "destroyed" by nonmythic cards. Design-wise, mythic cards will often (not always) care about whether the cards they interact w/ are mythic or not.
Mythic does take on some of the strengths of "protection from.." and "indestructible", but also has some weaknesses of its own for balance. Unlike w/ protection, mythic creatures can be blocked, but mythic cards are also protected while they're still spells (while being cast.) Additionally, against nonmythic cards, mythic permanents (creatures / planeswalkers / etc) have a "beefed-up" indestructible (can't be targeted too), but they lose this protection entirely against other mythic cards.

Mechanically, I wanted Manaform Jubilant to be an early/easy drop mythic creature to show that mythic could be used at the more basic level. It's prevent damage ability for blocking is to make it so that the jubilant is able to effectively block the damage from a creature w/ trample. It's not a game breaker, but it's a strong blocker and it can be an alright tank if you throw some mythic auras/equipments on it. 
Flavorfully, I wanted Manaform Jubilant to break the mythic = mighty conception & make it more mythic in the sense that it inspires myth/awe, and is apart from the mundane world.
