I hit the random button until I found Psychic Venom. Ashiok, Soul’s Eclipse Legendary Creature - Nightmare At the beginning of each opponent’s end step, that player exiles a card from their library for each untapped land they control. Surveil X and you gain X life, where X is the number of cards exiled this way. Whenever a player loses unspent mana, they lose that much life. 3/2 Now that we have desparked walkies, this might be a thing, right?

Pargrod, Caldera Keeper Legendary Creature - Cyclops Monk ~ can't be blocked except by three or more creatures.
Whenever ~ attacks, discard any number of cards. For each card type among the discarded cards, ~ gets +1/+1 until end of turn and you draw a card. 4/4

However, I also still had Soul Burn in mind from my last entry, which is another common from the same set, and all three of them play well together, as spells like Soul Burn and Drain Life would give you both something to spend the mana on, and another way to get the life spent back. Which means that I actually had an idea in mind of the entire Vampire/burn deck that this one would work best in.

I took the approach of going through my favorite set and finding a common I thought I could support in a way that is interesting even if you don't run that specific card, and I settled on Capenna Express. And the commander:

Few, alright, lotsa entries, let’s get cracking. {Spoiler} Flo00 - Ashiok, Soul’s Eclipse: I think this is a good unsparked Ashiok card. Its’ abilities are interesting, as it gives an opponent a couple of choices often: do I leave lands untapped and use it later? Do I perfectly use my mana? Maybe I’ll let the Ashiok user surveil+gain life? Or I’ll take the lifeloss myself? Works well with Psychic Venom as an addition to the deck: it does what Ashiok does, but way smaller and it enables Ashiok’s not wanting lands be tapped. thaneofglamis - Pargrod, Caldera Keeper: A card that doubles down on your common’s discard ability. It being more controlled with the amount of cards makes it a better commander though. Supermenace is a good choice with its ability to exorbitantly pump itself. The pump is a heavy cost, as you lose cards from your hand (or you gotta madness them), so this combo is proper. I’d be interested in what the deck build around it would look like (and if it could function properly as it’s a mono-red discard deck that prefers to discard specific cards with multiple types.) vizionarius - Trivink and Vimlinkt: That’s a fun combo of abilities. Prowess and pinging everything. The Goblin Wizardry would want to get prowessed up as well before you use the ping or fly. But as your card desires for that as well, I would guess that isn’t hard at all. Also, you left open the possibility of Goblin tribal with its typing, which is cool beans. kefke - Cordevia, Blood Sculptor: That’s a nice aristocrat. Your thought process behind the commons leading to this commander is a great insight, and does make one already think of what one can build around Cordevia. The lifeloss being 2 makes this more of a choice, as too much token creation on your side can really hurt, but as it is commander, it’s a bit less hefty of a price. Also, one would probably built the deck with cards like Death Greeter to trivialize the lifeloss. Only thing I have question marks around is the token type: why create a new graveborn type when zombie already is a thing? Jartis - Lonnie, Getaway Driver: Very simple commander, that really fits the common, but it’s still strong in what can be done with it. Treasures are after all very strong, and it should be fun to build around strong vehicles with hefty mana costs. Should make a fun build-around. Daij_Djan - What Goes Bump in the Night: Lure-like effect every turn on a commander. Neat. That should make for some fun building. Possibly with deathtouchers, tramplers and maybe flying to limit what can block your creature. It does work well with the commons you described, though, seeing as those cards aren’t good in any capacity, you might never use them. Still, this commander would be the best commander for them. Its own block-ability, the 10 mill, I don’t find interesting in commander. Maybe if you can steal from your opponent’s graveyards, but building around that doesn’t sound like the right direction. Maybe as a small aside in the deck, like 5 cards that do that. boxlaunch - Anil, Stern Enforcer: A strong white-blue control commander. That is strong in its own way, not in the counters up the ass or pillowfort ways that white-blue control commander decks are more known for. Its ability is also fairly simple and one-directional, which I like. Though it does give it a weakness: hexproof for example, or untappers through abilities. But hey, everything has a weakness. This commander would give a new home to plenty of not-that-great tappers, which is something I think is great. Also, love that the name of a “Stern Enforcer” is essentially: Anal. Because that’s how he is about things; anal. Winner: {Spoiler} Gotta say, I think all of these entries are really great. They’ve all got something going for them. But hey, this game needs a winner to continue, so: boxlaunch wins, with kefke as the second place.

Thanks for the win! I appreciated seeing all of your feedback for each card.
For the next challenge, since we are in the midst of Commander Masters Previews I would like y'all to: Choose a Commander Masters Precon Deck and design a new face commander for that deck.
(Decks are 5C Slivers, Jeskai (URW) Planeswalkers, Abzan (WBG) Enchantress/Enchantment Recursion, and Big Colorless/Eldrazi.)
You don't need to take into account the actual decklists, since they are being previewed Monday-Thursday next week but you can if you would like.

I picked it because it's an existing undead, and I thought that it would tie well into the idea of Cordevia doing strange blood magic, rather than simply raising the dead the normal way.

{Design Notes For Those That Care} Lately, some have judged certain features of my cards as though they were unintended consequences of the design. To alleviate that; I am fully aware that this applies to milling/discarding down to hand size/etc. That is intended.
That may seem powerful to some people. Well, Magic has been powercrept into oblivion lately. It's not necessarily something I agree with, but it does mean cards have to be a bit more pushed to see play, especially in specialty products like the Commander Masters precons.

Alright, we hit the 3 entries, let's get judging. {Spoiler} vizionarius - I really like how this card is a voltron threat, but also makes every planeswalker on your board within a single activation of ulting. I also love the lack of text, without compromising strength or flexibility with the card. Short, simple, and to the point, but still could easily be a very fun and powerful commander. Daij_Djan - I would consider this card to be a "lord" for planeswalkers. It offers discount and very good protection. Ward 3 is that critcial number where a permanent becomes "practically hexproof". Most nonland permanent removal is 3 or more mana, so a majority of the time you are probably better of hitting Sartuus and then whatever the problem planeswalker is. I am also a fan the 1, 2, 3, 4/5 as well as the 3 abilities each representing one of the cards colors. The second ability seems like a nice way to deal with lower toughness problem creatures. If I'd have to say 1 negative on the card, maybe its cmc should be 5 instead of 4, but besides that it is super sweet! Jartis - The most obvious card this reminds is OG Athreos. The main differences between these 2 cards on my eyes is this. Life is a much easier resource to pay than mana (see phyrexian mana), variable vs. fixed amount to pay, needing to battlefield and not, and of course card type. This commander essentially makes a wrath effect just a bounce effect for you. In addition to that, like you said, if your pick up more than 7 cards you just discard them and likely get all but 1 back. This is already the color combination with the best graveyard recursion, so even if someone pays the mana, you can probably get the card back anyways. The cost getting higher based of the card means you will get higher cost cards back more often, while a fixed rate allows less powerful cards to be recycled. This is a really cool design space, but I think one of the benefits on this card needs to give to make sure it isn't a complete menace at every table, especially for such a low cost.

The Pestbreather Legendary Creature - Hydra Pest Ravenous ( This creature enters the battlefield with X +1/+1 counters on it. If X is 5 or more, draw a card when it enters.) When ~ dies, create a number of 1/1 black and green Pest creature tokens with “When this creature dies, you gain 1 life.” equal to its power.0/0

Brian, King of Sulfur Legendary Creature - Human Spellshaper Whenever one or more white creatures attack, you may have attacking creatures gain +2/-2 until end of turn. , , Discard a card: Gain control of target creature until end of turn. Untap that creature. It gains haste until end of turn. Activate only as a sorcery. 4/4

Feedbackmelono: I like how you brought in Termagant Swarm to the world of Strixhaven with Pests! Feels fitting. However, I think your card is stronger than the Swarm. Not sure if it's a little strong for pauper commander? But you're more an expert in that domain. Flo00: Nice reference to the Planar Chaos card (I actually used it in my prerelease sealed deck for that set!). I really like your design. Also references the Spellshapers that were prominent in Time Spiral block. It shapes an Act of Treason, which wasn't printed for another 2 years (the effect was first introduced in red on Grab the Reins, which was already around; but also, Planar Chaos also had all the color-shifted cards, so this also totally makes sense for the card.) So a recurring steal effect feels cheap at 3 mana, but you do need the initial 6 mana investment on the 4/4 creature... probably OK. It hurts white weenie, pumps Angel decks (with a "may"), plays nice with madness, and also allows you to grab something from someone to pump your own board as well. I'm a fan. Sanfonier of the Night: That card frame and art are awesome! Not sure if Swift is needed on it, though it's an interesting ability. What I really like is surreal. That's a really near effect that I would love to see printed. The flashdrain ability is awesome too. It takes the Army concept and flips it on its head by making it go wide instead. Works well with proliferate. Since the tokens it creates already have surreal, I'm not sure it needs to grant surreal to other creatures you control, but it does help with the mill strategy. Great ideas on this card, but I think may be a little too many things on it. I like that you made a render for the token too. Daij_Djan: Hates on every other color (and contains every other color word... taking the challenge to the extreme)! The wording is a bit unclear to me. If I can target up to one each of those colors, then this feels a little too strong. If it's only one creature that's one of those colors, then I think it's a little weak. I think the intent is to be able to target up to 4 total creatures. In that case, that's a pretty devastating effect that can lead to big one-sided effect. Since it's the commander, it can be re-cast to have the effect go on again. Would love to try it in action and see how it plays. Very flavorful, and cool render. viriss: A steammage! I like that when she dies, so do the tokens. Gets the flavor of ephemerality across nicely. I think the mill ability could use a on it, but that's minor. I like the menace too. Interesting combination of caring about Elementals as well as artifacts. Makes for a great artifact re-animator enabler. Result
Winner is Flo00 with the only design that both hoses and aids the color mentioned, which I think is a cool design space. It feels like the most meaningful mention of the non-identity color, though I think all of the submissions were very well designed.

Umori, I choose you! Lerna, Nyxbane Gatekeeper Legendary Enchantment Creature - Hydra ~ enters the battlefield with X +1/+1 counters on it. Trample, ward--Pay 2 life. Other enchantments you control have "Ward--Pay 2 life." At the beginning of each end step, you may cast an enchantment card in your graveyard with mana value less than ~'s power. 0/0

Carsin, Plucked Angel Legendary Creature - Angel Warlock : Target creature gets +1/+0 and gains flying and vigilance until end of turn. Creatures you control have " , : Cast target instant or sorcery card with mana value X from your graveyard without paying its mana cost, where X is equal to this creature's mana value. If that spell would be put into your graveyard, exile it instead." 3/3 Of course, this guy goes together with Zirda, the Dawnwaker, making use of the fact the companion rule only checks permanents, as well as making all your creatures have an (additional) activated ability that can get lowered by Zirda.

Let's end this: {vizionarius}Neat way of making Umori work with enchantments in commander. Looks like a powerful, fun and interesting commander for enchantment tribal.
{melono}I imagine deckbuilding with this commander pretty crazy since you wnat to match up mana values as much as possible and get the balance between creatures and spells right. I thing concentrating on 2 or 3 different values sonds most promising. Allows for a good range of different deck styles.
{Phyrexian Ymonrah}13 lessons + Keruga in the sideboard. Nice. Fun commander that can be built in a variety of directions.
{emberfire17}Good commander for a multicolor deck. I like how the second ability draws you only one card yet still feels powerful. Small wording nitpick: She should probably say "other creatures" to avoid confusion on whether she enters with a +1/+1 counter herself or not.
I really like all of the entries. Having a hard time deciding a winner.
