The winner is Jartis, my wife likes Magic but she's not a huge card design buff, so there's no judgments for these. She found each of them interesting in their own way. Also, she wanted to see it with the Viking frame, so...

Tesagk : Just out of curiosity, why did you have your wife judge this? She came up with the challenge. (p.s. she also plays magic, just doesn't design cards)

Heh, funnily enough, my spouse provided the inspiration for my design. Behind every great man, I suppose. For the next challenge, many people praised Lorehold for putting a new spin on Boros design space without breaking the color pie, but I don't feel like the other colleges did that. So design a commander that presents a new (or supports a lesser utilized) playstyle option for any non-Boros two color combination.

Discard in Rakdos is usually just treated as straight up card advantage or occasionally turned into some generically useful engine like Tergrid, God of Fright or Tinybones, Trinket Thief. What if it was a more political tool? Obu, Shuffler of Suits and Swords Legendary Creature - Imp Citizen At the beginning of your upkeep, target player discards a card. Whenever a player discards a card, they may exile the top card of their library. If it has a mana value less than the discarded card's mana value, they may play it this turn. 3/2

Kal-Jez, Delirious Visioniary Legendary Creature - Orc Shaman , Discard a card: Draw a card. Add or . At the beginning of your upkeep, exile a permanent card from your graveyard. Then, if there are four or more different card types among cards in your graveyard, you may play the exiled card this turn. "At first, they mock me. But with time... they start seeing it too... and the laughing stops, and the weeping starts."2/2

@ sdfkjgh: I'd suggest: "Target creature an opponent controls and up to X target other creatures each gain lifelink until end of turn."

Black and red are both very good at making tokens, with black having access to many zombies and red having access to many goblins, and while "going wide" has been a theme in rakdos, a more explicitly token theme doesn't seem particularly well tread.

Judging { ZephyrPhantom } It is good enough to hold up in a 1v1, but also has tons of uses in a full multiplayer field. Very fun design. { lordpat } Gruul graveyard strategy is an interesting concept. I like that it fuels itself while also providing a small benefit. { sdfkjgh } Turning lifegain into card advantage would definitely be a big help for white. I also like that there's a lot of political uses for this commander. { itsmekidney } I do love a good token strategy, and it is a little odd that we've not really seen it in Rakdos. I don't know, however, how I feel about the fact that as long as you hold back one token creature, you can just throw your entire army into combat without much worry, as the way the populate ability is worded means it will trigger for each of them, instead of triggering once in response to an instance of mass death. Seems a *bit* strong, even at the cost. (Especially considering the cost includes the body of the commander itself and two more tokens for a total of 6 power at 5 MV.)

Madame Claudette, Vivace Violinist. two generic, a black, and a red Legendary Creature - Vampire Bard
Spells cost 3 less to cast and may be cast as though they had flash. Whenever a player casts their first or second spell each turn, each player draws a card. At the beginning of each end step, for each opponent that cast fewer than three spells this turn, they lose life equal to the difference and you gain that much life.
3/3
Nightcore Bay-bee.

When James enters the battlefield, you may destroy target creature. Whenever a creature an opponent controls dies, you may pay . If you do, create a token that's a copy of it, except it's a Construct and an artifact in addition to its other types. "Come crawling faster! Obey your master!"2/2

Jeff, the Hypercharger Legendary Creature - Human Warrior Haste, first strike Creatures you control have haste and first strike and attack each turn if able. Whenever a creature you control attacks, it gets +X/-X until end of turn, where X is its toughness minus 1. 4/1

Jartis - Seems very flavorful even with such a straightforward effect, to the point I can already get an idea of what the song material might be even if I've never heard it. Seems like a good strater/proxy commander that could freshen up the table. hydraheadhunter - I like the use of various mechanics to demonstrate speed, and the fact this is a group-hug/group-slug Commander that's made to sped up games and get more things done (addressing one of the big flaws in large Commander games IMHO for those of us who don't have the time to stay present for that long). Only real complaint I have is on the flavor end since I'm not sure how violins specifically relate to nightcore and your writeup kind of saves you in that regard because without it I wouldn't have been able to tell that this was about nightcore. Very creative design that tackles Commander from a different angle mechanically though. gamma3 - Another straightforward Commander but I think this one does a better job at working the flavor into its mechanics. It's a very direct conveyance of what the material is about and I ended up looking up Metallica just to see if there was some hidden meaning or production reference to the album just to see if I'd missed something. Of the cards designed here I think you had the best 'balanced' design, despite your Commander seeming overly simple compared to current ones. Flo00 - Hmmm, interesting promotion of a hyper-aggressive playstyle that usually doesn't work out so well in Commander. Feels a bit linear (might be more interesting in the 99?) but it does promote a different spin on an old take of playstyle and conveys the hyper aggressive mood of the song well. 1st: gamma3 - It was a close round but I think your more open synergies win out. This would see a lot of play in the same way Tergrid sees play - being able to enable a lot of different decks while remaining an interesting card all of its own. 2nd: Flo00 - Very creative take on giving aggro strategies a different kind of much-needed kick.

Thanks for the win! For your next challenge, I'd like to see a commander that creates or references Clues, Food, or Treasures. Bonus points for including more than one of those types in the design.

Scion of Meat and Treasure Legendary Creature--Elemental Dragon As Scion of Meat and Treasure enters the battlefield, investigate twice, create two Food tokens, and create two Treasure tokens. Flying, trample, haste Scion of Meat and Treasure gets +1/+1 for each Clue you control. Scion of Meat and Treasure gets +1/+1 for each Food you control. Scion of Meat and Treasure gets +1/+1 for each Treasure you control. Whenever you sacrifice a Clue, you gain 3 life and add one mana of any color. Whenever you sacrifice a Food, draw a card and add one mana of any color. Whenever you sacrifice a Treasure, draw a card and gain 3 life. 0/0

(Modal DFC) Cassidy, Museum Curator Legendary Creature - Goblin Citizen , , Sacrifice an artifact: Draw a card. If the sacrificed artifact was a Treasure, put a +1/+1 counter on ~. The love of his life was killed for the pearls on her neck.1/3 // Cassidy, The Ruby Eyes Legendary Creature - Goblin Rogue , Sacrifice an artifact: ~ gains double strike until end of turn. If the sacrificed artifact was a Clue, put a +1/+1 counter on it. Now he follows the trail of stolen gems that leads to her murderers.3/1

Amadeo, Plaza Trademaster Legendary Creature - Human Merchant Whenever you draw a card, create a Food token. Whenever you gain life for the first time each turn, create a Treasure token. , : Create a Clue token. 2/4 I know creating a Clue is called investigating, but I think it makes more sense flavourwise without the keyword. Wizards has done it a lot of not explcitly putting keywords in cards.

I thought it might be fun to try to make my own "Adventures in the Forgotten Realms" card.
* * * CONTEXT * * *Nicos Nathos was an adventurer from The Forgotten Realms who authored the book "Master Tactician — Magic to Aid the Art of War". For his efforts during the Godswar, he was named a War Hero of Chessenta. He was a priest of the Red Knight, a goddess of strategy whose followers served as soldiers, military officers, and instructors in the art of war. Card art shows a knight, despite him being a cleric, because wearing "the highest quality armor they can afford" was considered proper holy vestments for adventuring clergy of the Red Knight. The flavor text of the card is taken directly from dogma section of the Red Knight page on the Forgotten Realms Cormyr wiki, as this was the best source I could find for church doctrine. Mechanically, the idea here is that with the aid of a master tactician, you can make better use of your resources, allowing you to get more out of them.

With Universes Beyond showing that Wizards are willing to apply Magic concepts to non-Magic IPs, perhaps we could see the return of public domain characters as well, like Aladdin, or Sherlock Holmes.

Thalmard, the Transmutator Legendary Creature - Human Wizard Flash Whenever Thalmard, the Transmutator or another artifact enters the battlefield, choose between Clue, Food or Treasure token and create X of them where X the number of times Thalmard, the Transmutator have been cast from the command zone. , : Target artifact permanently becomes a 2/2 blue construct with Flying, it still keeps its types and abilities. , : Target artifact permanently becomes a 3/1 green construct with Trample, it still keeps its types and abilities. , : Target artifact permanently becomes a 1/3 blue and green construct with hexproof, it still keeps its types and abilities. 1/3
