My word is "rehabilitation".
Lina, Scion of Rehabilitation Legendary Creature--Human Soldier Vigilance, lifelink Whenever a permanent an opponent controls deals damage to you or a permanent you control, you may gain control of the permanent that dealt that damage. If that permanent is a creature, it gains defender. [Azorius watermark] “Laws mean nothing if they’re not enforced!” 4/5

Just rolled Observe on a random word generator. Welp, that really doesn't give much direction at all {Text} Irex the Shackled Legendary Creature - Elder Sphinx Flying Your opponents play with the top card of their libraries revealed. You may cast those cards and you may spend mana as though it were mana of any type to cast that spell. 2/7 {Commander Lore Insert}Irex, the Eyes of Dawn, was one of the first great beings of Amonkhet. Once an omniscient seer, she foretold and worked towards preparation for the Radiant Dawn. A time shrouded in a blinding light her foresight could barely pierce, she saw the coming of a God Pharoh, who would judge the cultivation of the arid plane. Despite her efforts to build a paradise to appease the God Pharoh, Bolas imprisoned her during his initial invasion of the plane. Shackled in the Great Necropolis for millennia, Irex is now forced to observe the creation of the eternals and the coming doom to her world.

I asked a friend for a word and got cucumber. Which is a weird running gag in our game night playgroup. Shushwash, Cucumber Engeneer Legendary Creature - Plant Artificer Food artifacts you control are 3/3 creatures in addition to their other types. Whenever you gain life, put a +1/+1 counter on target creature you control. 3/3 {old entry} Cucumber Lord Creature - Plant Food artifact creatures you control get +2/+2. , : Create a 0/1 green Food Plant artifact creature token named Cucumber with “ , , Sacrifice this crreature: You gain 3 life.” 2/3 EDIT: Oops, this is commander game. I'll have to rethink that.

OK, so randomword.com gave me "austromancy", the practice of performing divinations with wind. Hmm... High Austromancer Shergut - Legendary Creature - Bird Wizard Flying Whenever you scry one or more cards, you may reveal a creature card among those cards with converted mana cost X or less, where X is the number of cards you scried. You may put that card onto the battlefield tapped. 2/3

My word was "reliance", so I decided to make a monocolored commander that relies on you playing cards outside of its identity. (Which, yes, this IS just the Quirion Dryad ability but wide, but.)
Considering I was already making the card a mechanical reference, when I found out that the Quirion Sovereign already has an important character only seen in flavor text, I thought it would be fun to do the Commander Legends thing of "flavor-text-only character given a card with Partner".

I recently came into possession of a certain book, and decided to use it to pick a word. The word I landed on was "riches." And that got me this: Baron Aster, Keeper of Our Riches 3 Generic and 2 Black Legendary Creature - Dragon Vampire Mythic Flying As Baron Aster enters the battlefield, sacrifice any number of creatures, then create that many treasure tokens. Baron Aster's power and toughness are equal to the amount of treasure you control. Treasures you control cannot be sacrificed. */* Art by Verehin. {"I also made a card in honor of the books author, but the book's hella politically left, so open this spoiler at your own descretion."} It's Peter Kropotkin and the book was The Conquest of Bread. Kropotkin, The Bread Giver 1 Generic a Red and a White Legendary Creature - Human Rebel Advisor Mythic As long as the number of creatures you control is greater than the sum power of creatures your opponents control, creatures you control are indestructable. Flavor text: By what right then can any one whatever appropriate the least morsel of this whole and say - This is mine, not yours" -- Peter Kropotkin 1/1 Art by Torrocca.

hydraheadhunter: Did you intend the last ability to work more like Angel of Jubilation ("Treasures you control can't be sacrificed to cast spells or activate abilities"), or more like Assault Suit ("Treasures you control can't be sacrificed")? Looking good, everyone! I'm so excited to judge this one; there are a ton of fantastic designs here. Keep up the good work!

Whenever a player attacks the player on their right with one or more creatures, those creatures get-2/-0 until end of turn. 3/5

From my spouse: soliloquy (they're a writer ). I can probably make this work Edit: I didn't set out to make a Planar Chaos-style timeshifted Lazav, but here we are. Between the ability I came up with and the art I had, it just kinda fit.

The second one. I wasn't aware the effect had a template; I'll change it to match.

I broke something (again) so this is a repost. Sorry if it caused any confusion/harm. The contest is now closed! Judging time! { melono and Borgi, Who Gives Up} Word: French Swine Borgi, Who Gives Up Legendary Creature - Boar Warrior Vigilance Remove a Boar from combat: Gain 2 life. 3/3 *deep breath* *steeples fingers* ... Ouch. Ok, jokes aside, I really, really like this card. I was a little down on the tribe, but then I looked up Boars: End-Raze Forerunners. Decimator of the Provinces. Archetype of Endurance. Ilharg, the Raze-Boar, for heaven's sake. Even the lower powered ones are pretty good: Festerhide Boar, Brindle Shoat, Flinthoof Boar; they aren't the best, but they're nothing to sneeze at either. You even get Yasharn, Implacable Earth from your colors. Flavorwise (mmmm, bacon) it's pretty good. I'm guessing it can only remove creatures you control from combat; I'd also word it like Reconnaissance (also a French word). { sdfkjgh and Lina, Scion of Rehabilitation} Word: rehabilitation Lina, Scion of Rehabilitation Legendary Creature - Human Soldier Vigilance, lifelink Whenever a permanent an opponent controls deals damage to you or a permanent you control, you may gain control of the permanent that dealt that damage. If that permanent is a creature, it gains defender. [Azorious watermark] "Laws mean nothing if they're not enforced!"4/5 Hmm. Very powerful, with a few problems. Not sure on the wording but I'm pretty sure that could be done cleaner. It also has memory issues with a creature gaining defender permanently. Not impossible, but unlikely to see print (counters?). In terms of flavor...I'm leaning on less than more, but I can see it. This is more of a jailer than a therapist. { SilentKobold and Irex the Shackled} Word: observe Irex the Shackled Legendary Creature - Elder Sphinx Flying Your opponents play with the top card of their libraries revealed. You may cast those cards and you may spend mana as though it were mana of any type to cast them. 2/7 WARNING: FLAVOR FAIL. If she's shackled, how does she fly? Also, how can she do all that if only observing? I joke, though. But seriously. Very, very powerful. This might be up there with Sen Triplets as a hated card. Though she has one fewer colors, being able to hit all three opponents is seriously overpowered. It also causes some confusion about who can cast the card if they have Future Sight out. I'd be a bit more comfortable with an exile clause instead. The toughness might be able to come down a bit, to 5 maybe. { Flo00 and Shushwash, Cucumber Engineer} Word: cucumber Shushwash, Cucumber Engineer Legendary Creature - Plant Artificer Each Food artifact you control is a 3/3 artifact creature. Whenever you gain life, put a +1/+1 counter on target creature you control. 3/3 I think that's the correct wording (check March of the Machines vs Opalescence). This one is well-placed in its color identity. Food is not well supported, but it is centered in . (Fun fact: no red Food makers). I do wish we had more repeatable sources of Food, though. It's not terribly overpowered, but its uniqueness makes it fantastic. Even just doing lifelink tribal makes it powerful. { Lady Mapi and High Austromancer Shergut} Word: austromancy High Austromancer Shergut Legendary Creature - Bird Wizard Flying As you scry, you may reveal a creature card with converted mana cost X or less from among those cards, where X is the number of cards you scried. You may put that card onto the battlefield tapped. 2/3 I think the wording would be like Averna, the Chaos Bloom. Dang, this is good, possibly too good. It's not quite Edric, Spymaster of Trest levels of power, but it has a similar build with 1 mana creatures and a ton of scriers. OR you could go big and do Siana, Eye of the Storm with a white partner, or in the 99. Flavor: spot on. { MaiApologies (She/Her) and Liefellen, Quirion Exarch} Word: reliance Liefellen, Quirion Exarch Legendary Creature - Elf Noble Partner Whenever you cast a spell that's white, blue, black, or red, put a +1/+1 counter on Liefellen, Quirion Exarch and each other green creature you control. 1/1 Aaahhhh...see, the flavor is great with your word (and kudos for finding a great legend to make), but you've made a legend out of the only creature with "Quirion" in its name that neither deals with lands nor is an elf. That's...kind of problematic. It's a good card, but dang did you miss wide. { hydraheadhunter and Baron Aster, Keeper of our Riches} Word: riches Baron Aster, Keeper of our Riches Legendary Creature - Dragon Vampire Flying As Baron Aster enters the battlefield, sacrifice any number of creatures, then create that many Treasure tokens. Baron Aster's power and toughness are each equal to the number of Treasures you control. Treasures you control can't be sacrificed. */* I like this. Greedy, money-grubbing, ancient, and evil. Coupling the greed of a dragon with the lifespan of a vampire...ouch, not something fun. Not a big fan of the name, though; seems a bit stiff. Flavor is great; love it. { viriss and Saphira, Brake Cutter} Word: brake Saphira, Brake Cutter Legendary Creature - Human Pilot Haste, vigilance Vehicles you control are artifact creatures, have trample and haste, and must attack each combat if able. , Discard a land: Return target artifact card from your graveyard to your hand. 2/3 This is SUPER COOL. It's yet another aggro Boros commander, but does it in a way that is unique and flavorful. Other than Depala, Pilot Exemplar we don't have a vehicle commander, so I'm glad to see another one. The body is good for the cost, especially with her abilities. That last one, though...I'm interested to see what shenanigans I can pull off with that. I mean, equipment are artifacts, artifacts are artifacts... Something to think about. Lands will never be dead with her out. { gluestick248 and Dosti, Sinister Schemer} Word: sinistromanual Dosti, Sinister Schemer Legendary Creature - Azra Rogue Whenever a player attacks the player on their left with one or more creatures, those creatures get +2/+0 until end of turn. Whenever a player attacks the player on their right with one or more creatures, those creatures get -2/-0 until end of turn. 3/5 You were given a difficult word and managed to pull it off spectacularly. Kudos on making an azra as well; that's not a creature type common around these parts. (Random thought: might we see azra in the D&D set? They're themed after tieflings...) To note, attacking across does nothing. Flavor: well done. { Jartis and Lazav, Lonely Orator} Word: soliloquy Lazav, Lonely Orator Legendary Creature - Shapeshifter , Reveal a permanent card from your hand: As long as you control no other nonland permanents, Lazav, Lonely Orator becomes a copy of the revealed card, except it gains this ability. 2/3 Barren Glory. That is all. But seriously, I like it. Very difficult to build around and kind of weak... Omniscience. Oh goodness. Oh my goodness. Oh gosh. Oh my heck. FIVE MANA OMNISCIENCE!? Broken. Solid broken. White gives you tutors for it, blue gives you counterspells...ugh. This might see cEDH play, though no ramp is a difficult build-around. Actually, easily counterable, no protection, small body...eh, high-level casual. It does incite some weird rules issues: what happens when you play a nonland permanent then it goes away? Also, props to your spouse. I'm a writer too, and the son of a writer and librarian; I bleed ink. Flavor: fantastic, and slightly cherry flavored. { odivesco and Dario, Insurgent Provoker} Word: riot Dario, Insurgent Provoker Legendary Creature - Human Citizen Haste, menace Dario, Insurgent Provoker attacks each combat if able. Whenever Dario deals combat damage to a player, goad all creatures that player controls. 3/2 LET'S START A RIOT, A RIOT! LET'S...*coughcough* *Ahem* Ah, Three Days Grace. Riot is already a keyword, so I'm surprised (pleasantly) that you didn't go with that. Flavorwise you nailed it: he's a menace (nice) and incites others to violence. It's a pity that provoke fell out of favor. { thaneofglamis and Kizoth, Hand of Tojira} Word: swamp Kizoth, Hand of Tojira Legendary Creature - Nightstalker When Kizoth, Hand of Tojira entes the battlefield, return all Swamps from your graveyard to the battlefield. , Sacrifice a Swamp: Choose one - - Add .
- Return target creature card from your graveyard to your hand.
- Target creature gets -3/-3 until end of turn.
3/3 Lotsa threes on there. You got handed the hands-down easiest word on here, but...it's just a little too...not black(ish). The ETB is far and beyond what green has, at three mana, even with the restriction of Swamps only. The rest of it is spot on (and kudos for using Nightstalker): Dark Ritual, Raise Dead, and Ulcerate. Whew. Dang, I have NEVER had so much fun reading a challenge! These cards are varied, flavorful, powerful, and interesting. Unfortunately, only three will approach the winner's podium. On to judging! {Honorable mention} Ok, I cheat: there's two: hydraheadhunter with Baron Aster, Keeper of our Riches and gluestick248 with Dosti, Sinister Schemer! Both of these are absolutely amazing for different reasons. Baron Aster is just a powerhouse sac outlet/beater, and Dosti is just *mwah* on flavor. I was kind of sad to see melono and Borgi, Who Gives Up drop out of the running because I love that card. Ah, why not, have an honorable mention as well. {Third place} Third place is odivesco and Dario, Insurgent Provoker! Fantastic flavor (somehow reminds me of oil and rubber) and not too overpowered while being a powerful card. {Second place} Oh, here's where things got tricky (other than deciding the honorable mentions). It was tough, but viriss and Saphira, Brake Cutter won out second place! It's not just a combat-based Boros commander, it's a fun combat-based Boros commander! {First place} amechra and High Austromancer Shergut, come take your place at the winner's podium! Flicker, bounce, swing, pump; this deck could be a blast to play. Unusual ability tagged onto a Bird Wizard (for that Bird tribal support) and the brewing commences. Congratulations! Truly, I've not had so much fun doing this. Every time is something new, but you all have done me a great service by your entries. I have to say, thank you. So much. Truly. Good job everyone, and have a good whatever!

Oh, wow, I haven't won one of these in forever! Now, let's see... The last time we visited Dominaria, we got updated versions of all of the Elder Dragons, which all appeared back in Legends. There are actually quite a few legendary creatures in Legends, most which make are terrible commanders. If you click this link, you'll see a randomly selected legendary creature from Legends. Make a brand-new Commander based off of that card. Be sure to tell us which card you got!

Xira, Envy of the Court Legendary Creature - Insect Wizard Whenever one or more keyword counters are put on a creature you control, draw a card and put a +1/1 counter on Xira. : Put a menace counter on target creature. : Put a trample counter on target creature. : Put a deathtouch counter on target creature. 2/2 I got Xira and decided to take inspiration from my favorite set to give her justice. Just hope I'll remember designing a card this time, here's my random card for now: Jerrard of the Closed Fist. Well, the slate could hardly be any cleaner
And here we go. I intentionally wanted to keep the stats like in his original version. Sadly I wasn't able to find any more information on Jarred beyond his own flavor text. This version of him is supposed to represent him as leading member of the order previous to him being the only person left.

I think the link might be broken as it managed to rolled Hammerheim. Anyways I retried and by coincidence received Bartel Runeaxe, who judging from his flavour text, seems to come from there EDIT: Given that I know relatively little Dominarian lore and the wiki didn't have much to offer, I tried to play off Hammerheim's anti-landwalk ability with a modern twist to avoid referencing the outdated mechanic. Balance-wise, I'm hoping the softer, easier to remove, No Mercy effect compensates for the additional body with pseudo vigilance. Hopefully Bartel can stir up additional politics at the table as smaller creatures are more inclined to hit your opponents; yet you'll have to fend off giants. {Text} Bartel of Hammerheim Legendary Creature - Giant Warrior Whenever a creature deals combat damage to you, you may have Bartel fight that creature. Whenever a creature dealt damage by Bartel dies, put a +1/+1 counter on him. 4/4

I got Ramses Overdark. Ramsos, Prophet of Phenax Legendary Creature - Human Cleric Whenever Ramsos, Prophet of Phenax attacks, you may Destroy target enchanted creature. Inspired — Whenever Ramsos becomes untapped, you may return target Aura card from your graveyard to the battlefield. 4/3 I kept mana cost and p/t and went in a completely different direction with the flavour. Fascinating how the change of one letter can make a name sound greek-ish all of a sudden.

Based on: Barktooth Warbeard. I did my best to stay as close to the original stats as possible and just spiced up the text. To keep six total power, I reduced his power to three when I decided to give him double strike.
| Warbeard, Imperial Marshal Four generic, A black, and two red Legendary Creature - Human Warrior Mythic
Double strike. Whenever Warbeard deals damage to a player, create that many treasure. Whenever a creature dealt damage by Warbeard this turn dies, Warbeard gains trample unless that creature's controller discards a card. 3/5 |
