Unlike previously, I'm going to be judging these cards a bit more holistically. This already took me a couple of hours, and I don't think having explicit grades split into categories would be worth the effort.
gamma3 Mikael, Vengeful Paladin -
Legendary Creature - Human Knight
Double Strike
Whenever CARDNAME enters the battlefield or attacks, it deals 2 damage to each other creature without first strike or double strike.
: Target creature gains first strike until end of turn.
: Target creature with first strike gains double strike until end of turn.
2/4
Comments: I'm not a big fan of ability to continually put out one-sided pyroclasms for free, especially since he's in color for both haste and extra combat phases. If you slapped a
Basilisk Collar on him, you'd get a free one-sided board wipe
every turn on a 2/4 double striker that can give your other creatures double strike.
I'm also not getting a "vengeance" vibe. I'm sorry, Mikael, but prevenge is
not a real thing. On top of that, you forgot to include a rarity.
Verdict: Give him another design pass. The basic idea is good, but the implementation leaves things to be desired.
FLAREdirector Adaxus, Magewing Tyrant -
Legendary Creature - Dragon
Flying
Whenever you scry one or more cards, choose one -
• Adaxus deals that much damage to any target.
• The next instant or sorcery spell you cast this turn costs
less to cast, where X is the number of cards you've scried this turn.
: Discard a card, then draw a card, then discard a card.
: Scry 2.
4/3
Comments: Adaxus is a classic case of trying to do too much at once. Let's get started by addressing the elephant in the room - that second choice in their triggered ability is
stupidly broken. If I have two permanents out that happen to be some of the many,
many cards that let you scry 1 during your upkeep, your first instant or sorcery will cost
less to cast. Every turn. For free. It steals all focus away from any other cool things you card does.
There's also a reason that your first activated ability is without precedent - it's janky and
honestly doesn't fit with the rest of your card. I could maybe see it if Adaxus cared about drawing cards or discarding cards, but that's not what the rest of your card is.
Verdict: Despite having one of my favorite core concepts, the actual execution is messy and unfocused. A version of Adaxus that didn't have nine lines of text split over three unrelated things would probably be pretty great.
burntsquirrelman Dwa the Restless Fear Legendary Creature - Nightmare Spirit
Flying, vigilance, lifelink
Haunt
When Dwa the Restless Fear enters the battlefield or the creature it haunts dies, put an exiled card you own with Haunt into your hand and lose 2 life.
1/4
Comments: I'm going to be charitable and assume that the deck Dwa is printed in would include a lot more Haunt, because otherwise your deck will be a bit slim. That being said, I love the ETB/haunt because it's exactly what that deck wants.
On the other hand, I don't see why it needs to be on a 1/4 swimming in delicious keyword soup. I don't get a "that's a flyer!" vibe from the art - I would have preferred either Lifelink or Vigilance + Lifelink. I also probably wouldn't make Dwa my general - they would never actually be in your command zone unless you discarded them, because you're
always going to use the "when the haunted creature dies" trigger to recur it to your hand.
Verdict: Pretty dang good - I'm just not sure about the body you stapled your potential infinite recursion ability onto.
thaneofglamis Tikbala, Embermare Legendary Creature - Horse Demon
Haste, trample
Whenever Tikbala, Embermare or another creature with haste enters the battlefield under your control, it gets +3/+0 until end of turn.
: Tikbala, Embermare gets +1/+0 until end of turn.
2/2
Comments: Tikbala feels like a solid creature, but I'm not feeling as impressed as I think I should be. I look at that trigger, and I keep thinking about
Primal Forcemage, which was an uncommon. A strong uncommon, sure, and it didn't also have haste, trample, and self-buff... but still.
Verdict: I dunno - I feel like I should like Tikbala more than I actually do, that's all.
Flo00 Silienne, Surreal Master -
Legendary Creature - Kor Wizard
Shadow
Whenever a creature you control deals combat damage to an opponent, draw a card.
Discard a card: Target creature loses shadow until end of turn.
1/3
Comments: This guy is playing with fire. As long as you are working within your deck-building limits, Silienne effectively lets you pretend that you have an unblockable aggro deck. I mean, props for making an aggro commander in Esper colors, I guess?
Verdict: No real complaints - my only worry is that decks using Silienne might end up being kind of boring to play against, since they have a strong incentive to be uninteractive aggro decks.
Xenozfan2 Altea, the Stone Wall -
Legendary Creature - Human Soldier
Defender
: Target creature gains defender until the beginning of your next turn.
: Untap each creature you control with defender. You lose 1 life for each creature untapped this way.
"We must keep watch."2/5
Comments: I don't like how Altea is a five-color commander, because it feels kinda forced. She's
horribly overcosted, too - sure, none of her features require her to tap, but a 2/5 Defender for
is just kinda bleh.
I think it would've felt more natural if you had made her cost
, adjusted her P/T a bit, and split the Green and White parts of her color identity across her abilities. That being said, that second ability is still broken - there are
multiple really good mana sources that you could use to get arbitrarily high mana, and defender decks tend to have really good access to lifegain.
Verdict: A valiant effort, but one that was unfortunately built around a straight-up broken ability.
sdfkjgh Rezokoda, Masterful Riser -
Legendary Creature - Spirit Zombie Ninja
Graveyard ninjutsu
(, Return an unblocked attacker you control to hand: Put this card onto the battlefield from your hand or graveyard tapped and attacking.)
Creature cards in your graveyard have graveyard ninjutsu
.
Each creature you control enters the battlefield from your graveyard as a Zombie Ninja in addition to its other types.
, Sacrifice a creature with converted mana cost of X: Exile target spell or permanent with converted mana cost of X.
4/5
Commentary: I don't like Rezokoda for a few reasons. Firstly, Graveyard Ninjitsu
on its own is kinda ridiculous - it's the kind of ability that will lead to really boring games, since you can endlessly recur any creature that has it. It doesn't help that you decided to showcase it on a card that gives it to every creature card in your graveyard, which means that you're going to have some really boring recursion going on.
Secondly, you decided to make it slap two subtypes on everything it recurs. Sure, Ninja isn't exactly a super-supported tribe, but Zombies
are. It makes me wonder why you didn't go whole hog and slap Spirit on them too (I don't understand why Rezokoda is a Spirit. That picture doesn't say "Spirit" to me.)
And that brings me to the final ability, which feels like something you slapped on so that you can run White in your commander deck. Seriously, you went for
everywhere else instead of
, which would have made the whole thing feel much nicer. Cardfeel aside... man. That's an ability that would be
fun to play against - I mean, I
guess that you wouldn't have to deal with it very often due to how expensive everything is.
Because that's another thing - everything related to this card feels chokingly specific and just kinda hard to play with. What's your beef with generic mana?
Verdict: Insofar as there is a ranking system for the cards entered into the contest, Rezokoda is at the bottom. Come on, dude, I
know you can do better.
ZephyrPhantom Lyriel, Judge of Equilibrium -
Legendary Planeswalker - Lyriel
When ~ enters the battlefield, create a 1/1 colorless Spirit creature token with lifelink and deathtouch.
: Whenever a creature you control with lifelink deals damage this turn, you may gain that much life.
: Whenever a creature you control with deathtouch deals damage this turn, you may destroy target creature.
Lyriel can be your commander.
Comments: I'm not normally a big fan of planeswalkers, but I kinda like Lyriel's abilities. I'm not sure about the whole "mythic" thing (if we're going by War of the Spark design practices, she should be
), and I feel like her
is
very strong. But, as you said, your opponents
do have a chance to respond, and you'll have to skip out on the kinds of cards that might give her more counters immediately, so there's that.
Verdict: I like Lyriel in general, with only a few minor quibbles.
Daij_Djan Anna Kyohyama -
Legendary Creature - Human Shaman
Anna Kyohyama gets +1/+1 for each Spirit you control and +1/+1 for each creature you don't control that is haunted.
,
: Put target exiled card with haunt you own on top of your library.
1/1
Comments: I didn't expect to see two Haunt commanders, I'll be honest. I appreciate the simplicity of little Anna here - I think that she's liable to be absolutely
massive due to how much White likes to produce Spirits, but I'm leaning towards "it's fine". I'm also amused that Anna is the
first Commander that actually taps to do their thing. It took
nine cards, and that's a thing.
I'm not sure I like Anna's activated ability as much as I liked Dwa's triggered ability. Her passive ability makes me think that she wants to beat face - even with vigilance, it slows down her draw. I'd almost prefer it if she could do it to
any haunt card - remove a something haunting one of your creatures or whatever.
Verdict: Pretty nice, but it doesn't fully feel like she gels into something more than the sum of her parts.
kefke Forgemaster Bragvir Legendary Creature - Dwarf Artificer
Equip costs you pay cost
less.
,
: Discard a card from your hand. You may search your library for an Equipment card with equal or lesser converted mana cost and add it to your hand, then shuffle your library.
1/3
Comments: The way you wrote up Bragvir's activated ability, you can use it to search for equipment from an empty hand. Sure, that equipement has to have converted mana cost 0, but that's still something to consider. Additionally, you got the boilerplate a bit wrong - you always have to reveal a searched-up card when you put it into your hand, because otherwise you can cheat. Other than minor quibbles with templating, I'm really liking this card, either as a commander or part of the 99.
Verdict: Something about Bragvir is speaking to my soul, which is surprising given that I don't like equipment decks. I think it's the beard (and the overall design).
Jartis Cuaya, Feathered Tyrant -
Legendary Creature - Dinosaur
Flying
: Deal 1 damage to each creature you control.
3/3
Comments: OK, this is some serious elegance, and I like how you went with a humble uncommon instead of an extravagant mythic. My only gripe would be that there really aren't enough creatures with enrage for there to be much diversity in the decks, but that's immaterial when you consider that we have two other entries for
Haunt. I also wish that you had put in some flavortext, but I'm not going to knock you for it.
Verdict: You're good.
I'm going to give the win to
Jartis , with
kefke ,
ZephyrPhantom , and
Daij_Djan as our runners up.
