Hello all! I am working on a new set, one based on the 1970's and noir films. Specifically, I've been trying to figure out how to do something Saga-y, that triggers when you fulfill a particular task. What I've come up with are these Ongoing Enchantment that represent actions that are being taken in the world! Here's the rules I have for them so far:
XXX. Ongoing Enchantments
XXX.1. Each Ongoing Enchantment's text box contains a number of progress symbols.
XXX.2. A progress symbol is a keyword ability that represents a triggered ability referred to as a progression ability.
XXX.2a A progress symbol includes a Roman numeral, indicated here as “{rN}.” The numeral I represents 1, II represents 2, and III represents 3.
XXX.2b “{rN}—[Effect]” means “When one or more progress counters are put onto this enchantment, if the number of progress counters on it was less than N and became at least N, [effect].”
XXX.2c “{rN1}, {rN2}—[Effect]” means the same as “{rN1}—[Effect]” and “{rN2}—[Effect].”
XXX.2d An Ongoing Enchantment's final progress number is the greatest value among progress abilities it has. If an Ongoing Enchantment somehow has no progress abilities, its final chapter number is 0.
XXX.3. Ongoing Enchantments use progress counters to track their progress.
XXX.4. If the number of progress counters on a Ongoing Enchantment is greater than or equal to its final progress number, and it isn’t the source of a progress ability that has triggered but not yet left the stack, that Ongoing Enchantment's controller sacrifices it. This state-based action doesn’t use the stack.
205.3q Ongoing Enchantments have their own subtypes, unique from Enchantments. These are Investigations, Stories, Events, etc.
702.XX. Advance
702.XXa Advance is an activated ability, special to Ongoing Enchantments. “Advance” means “Put a progress counter on this permanent. Do this only once per turn, and only on your turn.”
702.XXb You may activate the Advance abilities of different permanents on one turn. You may only activate the Advance ability of a particular permanent once per turn.
702.XXc If an effect or ability tells you to Advance, and it is not your turn or you have already Advanced that permanent once this turn, you may not Advance that permanent.
And here's an example from the set:
Saturday Night Murder
Ongoing Enchantment - Investigation
Whenever you discard a card, Advance. (Put an progress counter on this permanent. You can only Advance this permanent once per turn, and only on your turn.)
Whenever you draw a card, Saturday Night Murder deals 1 damage to any creature.
: Discard a card.
I-III: Draw a card.
IV: Draw two cards.
V: Draw 3 cards.
Any thoughts? I really like this idea, but it may need a little mechanical tweaking to work.
Also yes, I'm milking disco for all it's worth. Absolutely love the stuff.
