Welcome! Welcome! Come in, come in; don’t be shy! How long you’ve traveled, to be in my backwater, so far from anything even remotely resembling officialdom. Have a seat by the space heater (careful not to get burned), and I’ll tell thee the sad tale of Trapped on Tattooine’s history.
Back in the mists of infamy (around late 2014 or 2015), I started this column over at www.themeadery.org. That didn’t even last a year before they “hit some server issues”. Many days’ worth of writing was lost to their server issues, including most of my maxiseries where I went card-by-card, reviewing The Reserved List, and seeing which cards deserve to be on there, which cards deserve to be reprinted (either Standard-legal, or in a supplementary set like Commander), and which cards deserve to be erased from the spacetime continuum. My findings were that the number of cards that actually deserve to be on The List are outnumbered by about 2.5:1! I also came up with a cast of characters that helped to express my various shades of insanity/inanity. If things over here at MSE work out, I might just reintroduce both of those things.
After moping about my loss for a few years, I decided to start the column back up again over on reddit. That attempt didn’t even get past 3 months (“That one burned down, fell over, then sank into the swamp!”) before I received a suspension for, I’m still not sure why. The suspension notice came with a cheerful little note, saying that while I could use reddit as my own personal blog, I was being suspended for using reddit as my own personal blog. Oh yeah, there was absolutely 0 hints as to how I could use reddit as my own personal blog without angering any mods. I obeyed the 2-week suspension, then went right back to doing what I was doing, figuring that I wasn’t doing anything that actually harmed anyone, unlike MANY of the more toxic (and still unregulated) comments on reddit. One to three weeks later, I was permabanned, for the exact same thing, with the exact same message, with the addendum that I could appeal the banning by contacting a moderator. I did so, and almost immediately received a message telling me that I’d been muted from any & all conversations with every single moderator on reddit!
So, to recap reddit: Jeremy Hambly-style cyberbullying, Pepe memeposting, and other assorted internet sewer-spew is perfectly ok by reddit, but a quiet little PG-13 (at most) Magic blog, where the writer encouraged his readers to maintain polite public discourse is bannable content. Gotcha.
And now, I’ve moved operations over here, to Magic Set Editor’s forums. I’d just like to thank its mods for so generously agreeing to host me here, in spite of my repeated track record of causing website shutdowns/inexplicable bans. I know Sourceforge has been having server issues of its own lately, so it’s only a matter of time before the digital disaster that is this column will force the entire operation into the fatal 404s!
Are you guys absolutely sure about this? I mean, it’s not too late to back out; I’d completely understand if you did!
Anyway, this will be a weekly column, dedicated to Magic, music, and my own particular brand of madness, all for your mental mastication. As per my new MSE Overlords, I’ll be boxing up any and all content PG-13 & up in their handy-dandy dropboxes. Or, I could just use those to enclose my sometimes Pratchett-level footnotes.1 I figure Thursday’s a good day for the column, so I’ll see you all then.
Hopefully, I’ll get a bit more feedback than I got at the Meadery (0), or reddit (at most 25 comments for 15 entries).
Until next week, this is Travis “sdfkjgh” Froggatt, hoping to see you all again!
